Title: INSPIRED BY NARSES2
Post by: kitbasher on September 18, 2015, 04:05:35 AM
It may be pink, it may have a camo scheme worn by some Hudsons.  It will have two engines and is inspired by NARSES2's recent build.

DeHavilland Sea Comet?

Yes, a Comet Jim, nearly but not quite as we know it.

Well I enjoyed my build of this ancient piece of plastic. Looking forward to it. Now the Hudson that the PR unit had, had a very interesting scheme

Do you mean the one in all over Camotint with the cameras hidden in the belly? Or the weirdly camouflaged one, which was mainly Camotint with tiger stripes? IIRC there's decal sheets for both of them, or there was anyway.

I was thinking of the tiger stripe one. One profile I have has it in sky/dark green with either light slate grey or dark blue grey with the sky carried on over the upper surface as the stripes. It's in SAM's Camouflage and Markings No 2

Yes this will be the scheme, and the Comet is now essentially thrown together:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi240.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff90%2Fkitbasher_2007%2FComet%2520whifs%2FComet%2520PR02_zpsbkkwyr1s.jpg&hash=f2afcb6fad6ce7966d194adab376eaf9916d1780) (http://s240.photobucket.com/user/kitbasher_2007/media/Comet%20whifs/Comet%20PR02_zpsbkkwyr1s.jpg.html)

As with my BEA Comet (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,40287.msg675427.html#msg675427) it's a case of glue, fill and sand to shape!  And fit a tailwheel.  So essentially a paint job.

Apologies for the size of the photo - not able to edit at the moment - once I get home I'll replace it with something slightly smaller, and the right way up. SORTED

Welcome hour or so modelling this afternoon, first time in a couple of weeks (was out of the country for just over a week).  So, gave the Comet a good rub down, some secondary filling also done once the model had been cleaned off.  Getting there!  Some mass wheel painting during the next session, plus painting the u/c legs and fitting a tailwheel (gasp!!).

No point in pics yet until painting is underway.

All built.  Mainwheels to be added once the u/c legs are painted but time to make with a base coat of Sky:

Right.  Trying to get this done for Telford to complete my Red Box Airfix Comet whif collection.

Sky base coat plus interior green and dark sea grey undercoat applied.  All a bit messy but hopefully sorted by top coats of Light Slate Grey and Dark Sea Grey uppers, Sky undersides.  Realised now that the coliur pattern doesn't match the previously posted real world colour image bt tonally I guess it'll be closer to the B+W photos and the drawing I'm also working to.

Me, Xtracolor Light Slate Grey, a paintbrush, this Comet and the second large glass of Primitivo in quick succession.  Comet looking a bit better, me fancying another glass of Primitivo.

Pressure's on to get this done in time for Telford - Dark Sea Grey top coat tomorrow.  I have begun to wonder whether Extra Dark Sea Grey would be a better option (thus using Temperate Sea Scheme  (including compensating colours) - will mull that over.

Friday it's everything else (but have taken the precaution of having a day's leave from work), then up to Brum in the evening to the in-laws prior to Telford on Saturday.  As I missed last year's SMW I'm really loking forward to this year.  Also meeting up at SMW with an old ex-RAF mate of mine whom I've not seen for 30 years on the Sunday.

Went for Extra Dark Sea Grey in the end - and I think it was the right decision:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi240.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff90%2Fkitbasher_2007%2FComet%2520whifs%2FCometPR11_zpsrpfnz7eb.jpg&hash=d42fa225e9125eac3c2d31b30e11fe3378a0b236) (http://s240.photobucket.com/user/kitbasher_2007/media/Comet%20whifs/CometPR11_zpsrpfnz7eb.jpg.html)

Now where's the Comet gone?  I think this shows that, tonally at least, EDSG is about the right choice.  Whether it's actually the right colour or not - well we'll probably necer know.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi240.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff90%2Fkitbasher_2007%2FComet%2520whifs%2FCometPR08_zpskjvr1e4v.jpg&hash=8172ac3f766c9b3dd5462cf910150c78839c7498) (http://s240.photobucket.com/user/kitbasher_2007/media/Comet%20whifs/CometPR08_zpskjvr1e4v.jpg.html)

Tomorrow sees tidying up, decalling, props and painting on a canopy.

OK all a bit rushed in the end but wanted ready for Telford, so....

Anyway, some matting and a couple of tiny home-made markings needed next but here it is along with an earlier Comet whif (proper pics plus back story to come after Telford), both going to SMW.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi240.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff90%2Fkitbasher_2007%2FComet%2520whifs%2FCometPR12_zpsz47iiuhz.jpg&hash=28058d09333d7ee73047ca789b447ca9572e2cec) (http://s240.photobucket.com/user/kitbasher_2007/media/Comet%20whifs/CometPR12_zpsz47iiuhz.jpg.html)

It really is a dreadful kit but clearly still selling otherwise Airfix wouldn't keep pumping them out.  A new version would be lovely, so pleeeease Mr Airfix.

AAAARRRGGH!  :banghead:

Applied Humbrol Acrylic Matt to the wings while I popped out to get some bits and pieces (including essential dosh for the weekend) and came back to find it had dried very well (good) but with a horrible chalky finish (bad).  so, applied the remaining decals to the fuselage and to recover the situation applied a coat of Klear.  Not great but will sort out the 'proper' matt finish after Telford.

Used to have great results with a cube of Revell acrylic matt - progressively thinned with tap water over time and probably what I need to do with the Humbrol is to halve it and then dilute.

Ho Hum.

Anyway, one other Airfix Comet in the stash for whiffing, I know how it'll be done so I think that will be my first new build after all of the 'in progress stuff is finally finished.  New Year's resolution.

Again.

I don't know what you mean  , just checked the spelling and it seems OK to me  .

Anyway, took the model to Telford and back.  This morning said hello to my ancient cube of Revell-based acrylic satin stuff (varnish I guess, made from Revell acryic matt varnish mixed with Klear), gave it a good stir, diluted it a bit more and applied it to the Comet.  A much better finish.  Not my best whif but as far as I'm concerned it is completed.
