Title: N.A. Mustang XI (Finished)
Post by: TallEng on June 05, 2014, 12:49:24 AM
So a couple of days ago Spinners produced a Mustang IV in SEAC colours, I suggested
It would look better with Dark Green and Earth camouflage, conveniently forgetting that Narses
Had already done one.   See here; http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,36541.0.html
Anyway the upshot of all this rambling is that I've decided to do a SEAC Mustang with Green and Earth
Camouflage myself...

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F0ca763f8f870733ef2e82386bcc7ac49.jpg&hash=f950b5be216ef020d6afbd789b02cd959adee90d)

Then I found this book;

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Fb1be3c834fa20787ac9b9cf485d437ed.jpg&hash=528e411db410844f5ce782dee8c03726a45a7258)

And this engine;

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Fbf0d4fb8232ee850a0b8679ee4a2f3ab.jpg&hash=dbc62fe4a14393a4382d0c2632c0099f6ab13fdb)

And with the addition of a Hurricane radiator housing (A Griffon is going to need more cooling right?) ;D
I've got this

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F24693549cacd5365286adbcdd9d528d8.jpg&hash=62e4cea27ba7f49e1b8dada53101cbfc754dd407)

I've added a taller fin and the Rolls-Royce fin leading edge extension for better directional stability (more torque from a Griffon)
The idea being that with the war in SEAC dragging on for longer than expected, the RAF wanted a more powerful and longer ranged Mustang to deal with the newer and faster Japanese aircraft they were expecting to meet.
So North American And Rolls-Royce came up with the idea of putting a Griffon in the Mustang (after all what's good for a Spitfire should be good for a Mustang)
I'm still not sure what mark number to use, as far as I can make out the RAF went up to Mk IV possibly Mk V
Then there is a big jump to Mk X used by Rolls-Royce for there own Merlin Engined conversions.
So I've plumped for XI, unless somebody knows better?

Regards
Keith

Looking forward to this one. Also have a vague idea for a SEAC Mustang, but that would most probably end up in NMF.

This is looking interesting Keith, I'll have to hunt down a copy of that book though, I've got a couple of High Planes Griffon Mustangs in the stash.

RR did look into putting a Griffon onto a Mustang, but ran into a lot of problems.  It's why their mid-engine fighter came to being ---

A Griffon on the front of a F-82 fuselage might be a better way ---

Which has just given me an idea, and I've got some spare F-51H wings I could use --- hmm!

A T-56 turboprop or RR Tyne!!

Right! Mustang update time. :o

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F964623ba9a971e911fe1e30916b4159d.jpg&hash=6eb000f0e7e1a8bf347091ddf9e20005681de0a2)

Now the Eagle eyed among you will have already spotted what I only spotted as I loaded these photos up to
Photobucket.
Namely I've managed to glue my Griffon on with a lot too much down thrust :banghead: :banghead:
Oh dear ( or something like that) I said, here I am on holiday with a minimum modeling kit and now this...
Well dad's not a Modeller but he does posses a junior Hacksaw, so whilst it's not precision  work it's good
Enough for me
So at the moment the Griffon Mustang is recovering from its Rhinoplasty  ;D
More later....

Keith

But Griffons DID have a lot of downthrust, and assuming yours is a late version and much more powerful than the teensy weensy ones fitted to Spitfire XIVs and XIXs it'd need some more downthrust.........  ;D

Like the look of it too Keith

I think you and me must be on the same wave-length, here's something similar I'm working on at the moment.  Only I'm sticking with the Merlin engine, albeit a hopped up one (around 2500 hp). I'm calling it a Cavalier Enforcer II

:tank: well gosh and darn it!
You've gone and put cannons on it ;D
That's what I'm doing as well, and probably from the same (Airfix spitfire source)
Is that the F-82 twin Mustang fuselage? Or a P-51H?
Looking forward to more

Title: Re: N.A. Mustang XI
Post by: kitnut617 on June 18, 2014, 02:21:52 PM
The cannon come from the Italeri Mustang Mk.I kit Keith, the fuselage is from the Beechnut F-51H kit and the wing is from the Airfix Tucano kit, which just happens to be very close in size and shape to a F-51H wing. Propeller blades come from the multitude of spare blades found in the Special Hobby late model Spitfire boxings.

Wow ! Great idea. I think it looks weird tho. Like a spit but not.....then again, like a stang but not ! Can't wait to see her painted.

PS-I just love that kit.

Title: Re: N.A. Mustang XI

Well..... It's i wish I hadn't done 'that' time :banghead:
You see I was flying the GrifStang around the room (as you do) ;D
Admiring its powerful lines etc, etc, when it came upon me that I didn't like
How it looked at the nose, because the nose was too high

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F18c45178c31bedd9680e00406fbe12f7.jpg&hash=431a57c98d94c766b99c49a6a8604d96ac04b527)

It needs a touch of down thrust, a bit Like Miss Ashley;

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F13bbc1c40d17fa74aea3fef8fcce34ac.jpg&hash=c7b48dbc4613fe4c86649fca52456fa1dc9078e5)

And if I'm honest the paint work is rubbish. I'm using Xtracolour and I'm struggling with it.
So, no I have to decide: paintwork I should rub it down and try again.
The nose, do I take the saw to it again or not?
I'll have to think on it
Comments, ideas etc great fully received.

Regards
Keith

Honestly, that side profile photo looks fine, same as the Griffon Spitfire XII. Xtracolour is worth perservering with ....several coats with a min. 12 hours between. I paint with a mix of Humbrol/Revell/WEM/Xtracolour. It depends on which colour, some are just better than others. You could treat the paint you've used as an undercoat...give her a light sanding and switch to another brand. Humbrol 29 always needs at least two coats but gives a beautiful finish. This advice is if you're handbrushing....airbrushing I know not ;D

Title: Re: N.A. Mustang XI

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I think I will just go with rubbing down the paint
And having another go
Progress pictures:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Fbc9884e807bbafa9f5c01e8d1d19a3cf.jpg&hash=9759dcab9cacedf1f7b340e115f087d76edeafa8)

I've also re profiled the tip of the fin and made it not quite so pointy

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Fe431a4be57e301d310713397e913983b.jpg&hash=857d22757619bcad1dce06875d53cbcdeaab2432)

And I've bodged together a possible Contra-rotating prop

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2F4b0b4c8331db5be2558b215c4a8b5c98.jpg&hash=18933c2656202c1db10b16a2aebc8d822a36d8e0)

Please note that the spinner shape is not final, and I will try and remember to turn one set blades round so that
They turn the other way

Keith

The contra prop just looks to big to me, detracts from her superb lines

Second that, much too massive. The five-bladed version looks much more appropriate.

Ya looks perfect with the 5 bladed prop. The contra is just too much and kinda ruins the classic lines you had going.

I hope that isn't the finished product. The blades do look too big and shouldn't there be a cone on the end of the propshaft?

No it was only ever a rough draft, to see what it looked like. If I'd gone ahead
It would have been tidied up and have had a spinner.

Small update, as Summer turns to Autumn I've finally started (slowly) to resume
Modeling hence this small update for the Mustang.
Obviously being powered by the Griffon was never going to do anything for fuel consumption :o
So I've built some larger drop tanks, now why I just couldn't use the drop tanks supplied or raid the
Spares box I've got no idea
But I decided the way to drop tanks with more capacity was too chop up 4 normal Mustang drop tanks
To enable me to produce 2 larger tanks
A bit like so;

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Ftemporary-27.jpg&hash=72d87268131495ff41469bfde8be934eb464b443)

Of course they've been sanded and filled now and are awaiting final paint.

The other thing I decided that the Mustang needed was some form of weaponry as well
As the cannons, so I came up with this........

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi980.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fae284%2FTourjet%2Ftemporary-28.jpg&hash=970b70bdedadd936d6cf3df848deaa109d3a487d)

Which is obviously a pair of R.P.(B)'s
Although why I am still working out. But they did seem a good idea at the time :drink:

Regards
Keith

The main Mods to the Kit, well obviously a Griffon from an Airfix Mk22 Spitfire, then an enlarged carburetor (chin) intake,
enlarged radiator intake and a taller fin + leading edge extension.
I'm still not 100% sure about the nose....
I might like to revisit a Griffon Mustang again sometime.

Keith, love your 5 bladed Mustang, no lack of magic there.

You know, one of Tophes drawings sort of look like having a P&W Turboprop as power plant, sort of like the Jetstream / Q400 installation. A bit of plastic card and scale 'o rama and I think you'd be there. It would be a build thread I'd follow with interest.
