Yeah that's right, I'm back to building again.... Sort of. So... What happen to the RNZAF TA-4K Mark II and Project: Kalashnikov? Along with the rest of modeling supplies, both are still in storage about 300 miles away. Been working at the new job for a few months now. Things are good and busy. For my birthday I just myself a Monogram F-20 Tigershark(still in the factory shrink wrap!) and a AFV RF-5 Tigereye. Can you see where I'm going with this... My RF-104 (http://www.far148studio.com/raafrf104.htm) needs some company

There is a bunch of work to be done to get the rear end of the F-20 to join up to the RF-5. If that's not going to be hard enough, I'm working with bear bone supplies. But life is good again. As for paint scheme... A TigerShark meeting a Tigereye....(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.arcforums.com%2Fforums%2Fair%2Fpublic%2Fstyle_emoticons%2Fdefault%2Fwhistle.gif&hash=70618c938766aaa32b4354abd539cb4df23e16ac)

Just think, if you do the cutting clean enough, or have the gusto to double up the work, you could always go back and try for something Iranian - mate the Tigershark's nose on the Tiger's tail, pattern yourself either one or both of the tails, and go for either the Saeqeh or Azarkash. We both know you've got the talent and skill to do that.
Good to know I'm not the only one thinking of a fuselage clip and swap these days... I was thinking about the front of a MiG-21 mated up to a Mirage lately..

Guy
I'm glad to hear you all are excited about this built. Well the hardest part of this project is mating two different kits from two different manufacturers and make it look as one. In theory, it should work. Went I first had the idea to do this project, I was thinking just graft the RF-5 nose to the F-20. Then rescribe the model. That changed as soon as I saw the RF-5 kit. AFV did a wonderful job. It's a gem with a tons of beautiful detail, which I want to keep as much of it as I can. So here's what I'm going to do, going to cut the rear end off the F-20 and join it to the RF-5. The most inportant cut will be on the RF-5. Where every I cut it, matching up the bodies could but close and not much work(Like that's going to happen) or it could go Oh Hell! It went Oh hell :banghead: The biggest issue is the intersection where the top of the intake meets the body. On the RF-5, it's lower than on the F-20. And the overall height of the body of the RF-5, where I cut the tail off, is shorter. So my plan is to join the upper fuselage of the RF-5 to match the F-20 then match up the lower. This solves the side view silhouette but I now have to fill the gap due to the height difference and have to move and reshape the intersection where the top of the intakes meets the fuselage.

To add more strength to the join, I super glued two stripes of styrene and two piece of cut sprue.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_2.jpg&hash=f248fb1bba39b3de98b7998723b28d22305dd7e2)
Once the two was glued together, I then saw what I was in for! I was hoping for nice and easy, a little sanding, some putty..... Not the case. I have one fuselage with two different sections and got to make it look like one.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_3.jpg&hash=3fee32a1ea77ca52482218a4843700604132e5e4)

I started with removing the panel that was proud of the F-20 body. Once removed, I glued it as close as possible to the F-20 section. I then drew a line on the RF-5 body, roughly showing me where I need to add putty to move that intersection up.

With the panel glued into place I started adding my favorite putty, Super glue and baby powder. Time to start sanding and shaping.

It took about 45 mins per side of sanding to roughly shape it. Currently waiting for supplies to show up so I can then shoot some primer on her. The only down side of all the sanding and shaping is that the rivet detail and panel lines on the intakes area were lost. But thats why I used Super glue and baby powder as my putty. Once I'm happy with the surface, I can go back a rescribe the lost detail as well as add some new panel lines. Not a big deal cause I'm going to rescribe all the rasied panels on F-20 rear anyway. The next big step will be fitting the F-20 intakes to the RF-5 OR changing the RF-5 intakes to look like the F-20. I think I'm going to just change the RF-5 intakes to make life easier. Thanks for watching!
Until next time,

I'm with Kit, you do make it look easy... I remember when I did my Egyptian F-20 modification, and modified the exhausts, the fun I had smoothing That section out... but at least the F-5/20 have nice clean lines to work with...

New project, cool.
But, forgive me for asking. Wouldn't have been easier to just add the nose from the RF-5 to the F-20 instead of the tail to the RF?
I dig your peace loving, Rastafarian inspired red wool F-20 Brad !
I had never noticed the difference in the intakes before ! I guess I should be paying more attention eh ! And on that note, is it just me, or does the artwork on the Mono F-20 box make it look like a delta wing ?
Hmmmm.......

Thanks everyone for your kind words and support

Yeah it would be and I had that same idea when I had first had the idea for this project. That changed as soon as I saw the RF-5 kit. AFV did a amazing job. It's a gem with a tons of beautiful detail, which I want to keep as much of it as I can.

I still say you should hold onto the other halves of both birds and do something with them as well.. the other side of the flip could be interesting, really.
I'll echo Steven and agree with his view of the AFB F-5 series. They are positively gorgeous. It is the only kit I have ever thought of
removing detail to ''improve'' the kit.

I fear there wouldn't be much of the F-20 once this project is over. What's left of her may go into the parts box. I've already cannibalized the instrument panel, cowl that covers instrument panel, splitter plates and intakes... :-\

Hmm... I see your point on that, but then, who knows what else might have been replaced on the other planes. Could leave it open as a potential Phoenix if you feel the motivation, and have enough concept parts, after the build...

Old Wambat is right. Last night I was checking out the Fantastic Plastic website and saw something quiet like you parts. It was the Viper jet from the Caprica TV series. Quite inspiring.
QuoteIf you were Sci Fi inclined; those left-overs look like they could easily become something Star Wars-ish!
Now all I see is some sort of X-wing ;D
Here's a small update....
The next big step is intakes. Do I change the RF-5 intake to look like the F-20's or graft on the F-20's  The F-20 intakes have larger openings and the splitter plates is totally different from the RF-5s. After some time trying to figure how to make the RF-5 intakes into look alike F-20 intakes, I figure just build and graft the F-20 intakes on. So the F-20 intakes are in 3 parts, the splitter plate, upper and lower intake. There is a small vent on the upper intake which I want to save. So after the intake were all together, I cut them off the F-20 fuselage just behind the small vent. Now with the new intakes in hand, I can eyeball where I got to cut the RF-5 intakes off and fit the new intakes. In the pic below, you can see the RF-5 intakes removed and the F-20's all sanded and ready to be glued into place. I also glued and fitted the wings to the fuselage.

I want to reposition the tail planes, so with my razor saw, I remove them. Later I will add a piece of aluminum tubing to the fuselage and tail plane. After looking at the kits nozzle, I decided to replace it. The F-20 was powered by a single General Electric F404 engine. Guess what else is powered by a single 404, the JAS-39! so I order Aires closed nozzle for the JAS-39. Another jem. Molded and cast beautifully  Only some minor cutting and sanding to get it to mate up with the F-20. It's not glued into place yet, just mocked up for photo.

Thanks guys
QuoteHow do you make it all look so easy ?
Looks are deceiving ;D It took a lot of work, I should say it took a lot of sanding to get her to this point. Getting the F-20 tail to match up took about 10 hours (+-2), the intakes this past weekend took about 8 hours(about 4 per intake). And I'm still fill pin holes!
QuoteThe engine exhaust cone is a great idea. Have you considered a paint scheme yet?
Yeah, it's really going to dress up the rear end nicely. As for paint scheme...... No, nothing sat in stone. I've been all over the map.:-\ I would like to do a Tiger Meet scheme of some sort. Here's a few that I like

Like the Norwegian bird and the Swiss one is always nice.
A South Vietnamese version or Iranian would also be different.
Small weekend update
Time to get her looking uniform. The AFV RF-5 has some amazing recessed panels and the Monogram F-20 has 1986 greatest raised panels. So this weekend I've been off and on sanding the old panel off and scribing in new ones. I started yesterday on the left side and today I managed to work my way to her underside. Working my way rearward, you can see I'm about half done.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_15.jpg&hash=3eec1f0a987a78b295c2d75f25a8a6c28b58a489)

Beautiful, clean work as always Steven ! Which tools are those ? The pin vise looks different and what's the serrated job do ?
Sentenial Chicken did some great F-20 profiles if you are still having trouble picking a scheme.
Blimey, that's some SERIOUSLY good work there! :o
I'd never even think of doing stuff like that, respect!
QuoteWhich tools are those ?
I've been using a drafting eraser shield as a scribing template. For scribing, I use the tip x-acto but not the sharp side (sharp edge facing away from the model). The pine vise is normal. I use it for the rivets and widening out the new panel line. The serrated job is an x-acto blade I cut notches out(Dremel tool & cut off wheel) of as well as cut off the tip. It's a great tool to make straight lines of odd surfaces. It cuts/scribe pushing and pulling.

So, I've been getting the front office ready so I could get the cockpit tub into the front halves of the fuselage. I'm using the Monogram instrument panel cause it looks more modern with the two MFD's. It's a bit wider than the RF-5's panel. Which when the two halves come together, there is a large seam in front of the cockpit that needs to filled. I tried to reduce the seam as well as I could by sanding the sides of the instrutment panel. But I don't want to go too far and start eating into details. The good part is the seam behind the cockpit is nice and tight. And it matches up to the rest of body. It's far easier to fit & hide the seam in front of the cockpit then behind. BTW... AFV tub, Monogram control stick & instrument panel, and the ejection seat is from Quickboost (not glued into place)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_16.jpg&hash=1c09a38eda1c74e3626b5abca9f4e07fe32aaeac)

In order to save the surrounding panel lines, I masked off the area where I need to add putty. And using my favorite putty, super glue & baby powder, I filled the gap. Before the putty cures, I removed the masking tape.

The AFV RF-5 kit is amazing. Beautiful engraved detail, the part fit is wonderful. The one and only let down is the camera area in the nose :-X The instructions say to paint the area black and place the clear part over it. So all you see is a black painted area?! Don't like the idea of just painting it black and leaving it empty. I want to put something in there. Ha, I've got a bunch of left over F-20 parts. Going to use the ejection seat halves as my cameras.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_20.jpg&hash=eaddd3938746212eb430ecc78258746b7a85f8e8)
I trimmed off the lower seat part and glued to the two side together. Looks pretty cool to me. I made the plate that the cameras will sit on out of styrene, cut and sanded to fit. Here you can see the plate glued into place and the camera sitting in place(not glued down yet) And for the nose camera, I just cut a piece of sprue/rod and glued it into place.

Time for another weekend update, I figure recon birds travel light and fast. That means at some point in her mission she's going to need refueling. I ordered AMS F-5 refueling probe. But once I saw it, I was not happy with it. So, I cut it up and reworked it to my liking. I used some aluminum tubing and Master Model's beautiful NATO refueling probe tip.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_22.jpg&hash=0ee292b6051a7bc55eb465ef461b9e2004d0cc42)
So after last weekend sanding session of the forward fuselage, some panel lines were washed out or gotten softer. Even thou I masked the area where I applied putty, sanding will take it toll on the surface. I rescribed the nose with my usual tool, pin vise, serrated Xacto and an eraser shield. I also added a new pitot tube made from a steel pin. It's a bit thicker than kits but it will be much harder to break off.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_23.jpg&hash=55af6e22bf0f8536f67243bf4c0c705485aa8036)
I manage to get her tailplanes on. I located and drilled a hole in the base of her tail and super glued a 3/32 aluminum tube into place. I then located and cut a notch in the tailplane and super glued a piece of 1/16 aluminum tube into place. I then sanded the top and bottom of the tailplane where the aluminum tube is placed. You can also see there are a few panel lines I'm not happy with and will be filled with super glue then sanded smooth.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_24.jpg&hash=bc334f42c3041c923dd5ab635c8034f2d4e8bd75)
Here you see the forward fuselage and the rest of the body glued together and shot a very light coat of tamiya flat black as a guide coat. You can also see I added the leading edge extensions to the wings. Time for some more sanding! :drink:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_25.jpg&hash=777672cd290671b7a85b07b2786cacce21478aed)
After sanding the guide coat, you can see the panel line detail has been restored. The guide coat also help to see all the area that still need some loving.

The photography is as good as the modelling, and that says something  You really feel you are almost part of this build
You're right Chris ! Very well done on both counts. She's really coming together and the refueling probe is going to be a great touch of realism.
:tornado:
Thanks guys
Here's a small update. Was looking at the tail of the AFV kit and noticed it had a lot more detail then what's on the F-20 tail. I was going to use it and cut off the monogram one but the F-5 tail is much smaller than the tiger sharks tail. So I start adding more rivet detail. A row here, a row there.... Then BOOM!!! We got a blow out in the tail! The pin vise blow out a chuck of the tail. A few colorful adjectives... :banghead: Then it was Oh no! Where is it? The carpet monster wasn't getting this piece. A 1/2 hour into the search party, the blown out part of the tail was saved and was super glued back into place. I have since then sanded and restore the blown out area.

I also manage to dress up the intakes. I added a Photo etched panel that comes with the RF-5 kit. I also scribed a few new panel lines and restored god knows how many rivets to the body

Question from a non-user of PE. How do you attach such a piece as that without filling all those tiny holes with glue?
QuoteQuestion from a non-user of PE. How do you attach such a piece as that without filling all those tiny holes with glue?
A very, very, very tiny drop of super glue spread around so that it's a thin as possible. Then careful place the part. If you place the part wrong and your super glue is thin enough, you can slide a xacto under the part and remove it(just don't bent it). Once off, lightly sand the super glue off the part and where you first place it then give it another go. Which I had to do to the other side. All in all, it worked out fine.
Hope that helps,

I've heard of using a pin dipped in CA to apply a very small amount. I'll have to try it. Thanks!
It's been a while since I posted an update. The past few weeks been super busy at work and had no time to play with my Super Tigereye. Now that I'm back on normal work hours and got some much needed rest, I manage to do a little work on her. I got the rest of her flight control surfaces on alone with the missile rails. I also fitted and glued the cowl covering the instrument panel into place.

Got good news and bad news. first the good news. She's really getting very close to paint. And now the bad news,(its not so bad) The clear part the is that is the glass over the cameras, cracked. Note to self... don't use super glue accelerator on clear parts. I used super glue to glue into place and should have sat it aside and let it dry/cure on its own. But I didn't... I added a drop of accelerator and heard a crack :banghead: #$%&!!! The heat from the rapidly curing super glue cause it to crack. So.... not going to try to redo it. That leaves me with two options; one is to make some protective covers out of styrene, paint them red and glue them into place. Or two, Paint or cover the window area chrome silver. I'm leaning toward option two now. Easy and quick. Keep the build moving forward.

That sucks....but I like option 2 as well, keep her moving !
You forgot option three: Crash mould a now piece
Gondor
Or option 4, find a replacement from someone, I have a Mirage 3 recon noise piece...
I have a feeling I already know what you're response will be, friend, but there is the 'is it really that noticeable ??' option.... Just a thought, Steven
Ian
What's the 'is it really that noticeable ??' option?
"Let it go...." - to quote a well known contemporary Disney movie song. Could you leave it as it is and overlook it ??. As I said (and knowing your passion for detail), I'm fairly sure what the response will be !!
Ian
Quote"Let it go...."
Yeah, I'm still struggling to learn that lesson! ;D
Steven
Fantastic work!
Re the cracked window, there's always the Whiffjitsu option: instead of letting it go and saying nothing about it, let it go but make up an outrageous tale in the back story to account for it. Result: you still don't have to fix the crack, and you get some back story "colour" as a bonus.
For instance: you could do it in Chilean colours, then say this is what it looked like after hitting a condor over the Andes, the compensation being the look on the bird's face in the last photo the plane took before it hit it...
Have you tried dipping the part in Future or similar?
I fixed a couple of scratches & cracks doing that with the Defender build, I think it was. Worked well.
QuoteHave you tried dipping the part in Future or similar?
Yeah and the crack is still there. I'm still leaning toward option two.
Here's a small update. This morning I did a paint test on her drop tank. First I shot the whole tank Euro I gray. Next I added my silly putty stripes.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_34.jpg&hash=a6a0ba3f4dea7d5214c80d17d85a3a306c443ea2)
I then reshot the whole tank in Neutral Gray.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_35.jpg&hash=b7939ab3defda742cf206ecedba73fdf31bcc6cd)
Then I removed the silly putty and now I got one tiger striped drop tank

I have silly putty in the drawer. I have to remember to use this idea soon. It sure give great results. ;D
Hmm, I don't have an airbrush, but I wonder if this would work with brush-painting?
Yep it's a great technique, used it many times. My aggressor Gripen was done the same way:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv470%2F280163%2F025a9b8f-0f50-477c-a736-4e510185008c_zpsbad568d0.jpg&hash=ba9029b6d86d2ff1d7af0a2ddff11d1645933e8c) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/280163/media/025a9b8f-0f50-477c-a736-4e510185008c_zpsbad568d0.jpg.html)
Not sure that using a brush would generate the same result, but the obvious way to find out is to try.... preferably on something small and insignificant first.
Steven great wee update as usual. friend.

Why not?
So many reviews and forum blogs assume that you HAVE to use an airbrush these days. It's just not true, brushes work well too, they just need different techniques.
One of the big things you'd have to worry about with brush painting this is the brush dragging up the underlying darker coat, a coat of Future (or similar) before putting on the silly putty should prevent this, plus a rub over with a very fine grade sandpaper after the 2nd coat to remove any paint ridges should work a treat.
PS: Remember to only use acrylics for this, especially the 2nd coat, as I'm pretty sure the solvents in enamels dissolve silly putty.
I only use Acrylics anyway, so that particular issue shouldn't come up. I'll give it a try on something when I have the chance and see how it develops. In the meantime, thread hijack over!
It's been a while since I've updated this thread. Not much has happen. Be fixing a bunch of panel lines I was not happy with. Just like the drop tank, most of the fuselage will have tiger stripes on it. I got a coat of euro gray on her and soon it will be silly putty for her stripes. Here you can see I added a blade antenna and the refueling probe.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_34-1.jpg&hash=8c0c2b830a6bc24828605129d7cb509ec45f1b46)
For the underside, I will not have the stripes "wrap around" . It's just going to be neutral gray. To break up the all gray bottom, I preshaded the panel with plain jane flat black. I ran into a problem on the rear. Remeber the rear is Monogram's super dark gray plastic, preshading flat black on it is useless. So I shot the area with some light sea gray. Later today I will go back and preshade the rear.

Well...I few things happened since I last posted. Since last time, I painted her(neutral gray w/ euro gray tiger stripes), was not happy with the results :-X, stripped the paint completely. And this morning I got around to preshading her. I am no longer going to do a tiger meet scheme. I am going to do a three color camo with a gray bottom.
Here's a few pics of her as she is now.

It's been a while since I posted anything on this build. Well... she sit just like last posted, with one of three colors painted on her. Been distracted by the summer. Been to a few airshows as well as work has been super busy. Makes for more fun money. More fun money = more future projects. I'd like to share a few of them with you all. The first came to me as I was looking for a new paint scheme after my tigermeet scheme incident :banghead: I was looking at PantherG´s profile thread (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,29685.0.html) cause he always comes up with some very interesting paint schemes. The paint scheme I chose for my Super Tigereye is base on one PantherG's OV-1profiles. >>>Look Here<<< (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,29685.msg624264.html#msg624264) I really like the second one and will be use it. But while looking at it, I thought " Boy, that really looking like a WWII German nightfighter!" My first idea was to change out the engine and use the same wing. But what I'm going to do is use the wings, engines, along with it gear from a Bf-110. Going to make her a tail dragger and remove the center tail.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2Fupdate_1.jpg&hash=001772e8971d8af2de041e2b267d2c27daa5d6ff)
On to new future project no# 2. I have always loved the look of the Blohm & Voss BV 141. Now that Hobbyboss made one in 1/48 scale, It's going to be a great starting point for my asymmetry fighter. It will have the same feeling as the Blohm & Voss BV P194 but without the jet engine. Not too sure about paint scheme but I'm pretty sure about the armament. She will have a 50mm!

And last but not least, as we all know Revell release their beautiful new tooled 1/48 Tornado earlier this year. Now I can make one of Darth Panada's ROKAF Panavia Tornado. (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,33158.msg636153.html#msg636153) I do know it will be a IDS and not a F3 but what scheme  All look wonderful. I am looking for a pair of 1/48 Tornado hindenberger tanks (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,39421.msg652237.html#new). Any help would be greatly appreciated

Glad to hear you've had an exciting summer, I know the feeling about leaving your models standing for a while with all the other stuff distracting you. I've had one much the same!
I'm excited for your new projects as well though - be interesting to see everything that comes out of them. I'm always following your threads.
Good luck finding the Hindenbergers - I was looking for a pair a while ago with no luck, so if you do get hold of any, please let me know where!

I used Model Master enamels Dark Earth(ANA 617), Dark Green(FS34079) and Gunship Gray(FS36118). Got a few areas that need to touched up but all in all I'm much happier with this scheme. The pics really don't do the colors justice, looks way better in person.

QuoteThe pre shading is showing through just right
The key to preshading is thinning your paint properly. I shade with testor plain jane flat black(thinner 60/40 paint to thinner) Once I'm happy with the preshading, I start painting the main scheme starting with the lightest color first. Again, I thinner my paint to 60/40. When the paint is this thin, it take a few passes to build up the color. Making it much easier to have the preshading show through. Also take your time. Preshade one day, shot your first color the next, then another and so on until YOUR happy with the results.
QuoteWhen I look at this project from certain angles I can't help thinking of the front half of a BSG Viper.
Yeah, she does look like a Viper.
Here's this weekends update. Her main camo scheme is done. Still got to paint the metal area in the rear, antennas & bumps and wheel well. Enough talking, here she is as of today(10/11/14)

Project update.... Not much has happen since last time I posted here. The real world has had me pretty busy(work). But now that the holiday season has started, I hope I find some time to play again. I am toying with an idea.... will talk more about that later.
Thanks for stopping by again!

I only caught this thread now... :o What an amazing job! I just had to read the whole thing, keep it coming!

Girls and their accessories.... Heres's a few accessories for my girl. Here's her center line drop tank. It's the original tank from the Monogram F-20 kit. I cut off the fins and rescribed a few lines, preshaded and painted.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_40-1.jpg&hash=85126bd0fcf405effc3f185e4cb8185537a9b309)
Because I hate painting intake trunks :-X... I made some intake covers. They are just a piece of sheet styrene with a styrene rod wrapped around it. easy and simple!
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_41-1.jpg&hash=670027e53dec53a736bb2efc9b34a679173526db)
The RF-20 is used from armed reconnaissance as well as target marking. So her loadout will be for a training mission. She will have an AIM-9X, an ACMI pod and a "Shorty" targeting pod.The 9X and the ACMI pod are hasegawa. The targeting pod is mine. I while back I made a master part and molded it. This one is a resin copy. You can see in this image the brass rods used to attach to the hard point/weapon station.

Always had a soft spot for the F-5, now officially in love with the F-20!

I'm sorry but I just don't see her that way. And if you think the F5 is curvy then we definitely don't share the same taste in women ;D ;D
I just think the F5 family are rather bland (I don't actually dislike it, in fact I have no feelings for it either way) doesn't stop my admiration for the model though
Photo update as promised
Panel lines washed with watercolors. A mix of burnt umber and black(60/40). Still got to wash her wheel well.

Here's a tiny update. I did something different with her hardpoints. I washed the panel line in my normal mix of burnt umber/black watercolors. But I also wash the little cicrles/bolts in silver. When the light hits it a certain way, the silver wash pops.

But, forgive me for asking. Wouldn't have been easier to just add the nose from the RF-5 to the F-20 instead of the tail to the RF?
That's what I did for my 1/72 one a few years ago

Fantastic work, Steven.
Thanks for stopping by Ian . Unfortunately I have not worked on her since mid march and now I'm full on into Airshow mode. I'll get back to her sometime this fall.
Until later,
Steven :tornado:
Hello! What been going on? Well with airshow season slowing down, I've getting the itch to build again. I did do some work on her this weekend. I molded and cast some chaff/flare boxes. Got some paint on them and glued them to her belly. I know it's not much but I'm slowly getting back to the table.

It's been far too long. Here's a small update as well as a glimpse into things to come!
So on her belly, the seam where the F-20 tail joined the RF-5 body was not filled very well. So this morning I check my reference material ;D and found there were some reinforcing strips add at an unknown date. On the model, the strips are made from vinyl tape. Also I decided to close the main gear doors. After a little sanding, they fit nice and tight.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_48_2.jpg&hash=817f3091a5627aa26d7c6121056ad84cab8aa817)
I preshaded the strips and the doors with flat black. I then shot them with light sea gray. Later today, I'll give the area a coat of future and rewash the panel lines tomorrow.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_49_1.jpg&hash=88834f6aee90509097e963d9efd6144ccb16101b)
The drop tank I used to test the first paint scheme of my RF-20, a low vis Tiger strip, I decided to used it. It's already put together and painted... why not. I gave it a gloss coat of future yesterday. Sometime today, I'll give it a wash.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_50.jpg&hash=9d2cd43c4ae4a384cefcd7694ebbf5436a990ac6)
And here's what coming soon! ;)

Until later,

Very good stuff!!
Glad you are back with it. I may not particularly like the type (waits for the caterwauling to start ;D) but I can appreciate really good modelling
Your work is just amazing ! Great stuff, and thsnkd for the updates
Thanks guys
Here's a little update from this morning session. Manage to wash the reinforcing strips area and the main gear doors. There's a little area where I need to sand out a little poop. Got her hard points on. Along with her "Shorty" targeting pod and tiger striped drop tank.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv61%2Ffar148%2FRF-20_51.jpg&hash=a6d207740d999e3f863a0ada11d0c01d99c3ccb2)
Until later,
Steven L
TADA!!! She took 2 years, 1 month and 13 days to complete.
Here's what I did, I grafted the tail of the F-20 onto the fuselage of the RF-5. Wouldn't have been easier to just add the nose from the RF-5 to the F-20 instead of the tail to the RF? Yes it would have been and I had that same idea when I had first had the idea for this project. That changed as soon as I saw AFV Club's RF-5 kit. AFV did a amazing job. It's a gem with a tons of beautiful detail, which I want to keep as much of it as I can. I did used the larger intakes from the F-20. The nozzle is from Aires. The grafted F-20 section was rescribed. The cockpit tube is from the AFV RF-5 but I did used the Monogram instrument panel cause it looks more modern with the two MFD's. The ejection seat is from Quickboost. The Refueling probe is kitbash and scratch built along with Master Model's beautiful NATO refueling probe tip. New pitot tube from a steel pin. The 20mm cannon is an aluminum tube. I cut off the tail planes from the Monogram tail section and added some aluminum tube to make them move freely. Her drop tank is from the AFV kit and was used as test for painting a tigermeet scheme. I did paint my RF-20E in the tigermeet scheme but I was not happy with the result so I stripped her down and repainted her as you see her today. I used Model Master enamels Dark Earth(ANA 617), Dark Green(FS34079) and Gunship Gray(FS36118) for three tone scheme and light sea gray(FS36307) on her belly. I did preshade her with flat black. The AIM-9X and the ACMI pod are hasegawa. The Shorty targeting pod I made. Decals are from Academy's 1/48 F-16 kit no# 12204 and EasyCal's ROKAF F-5 sheet. The chaff/flare boxes are resin copies. OK enough talking... Here she is, My ROKAF RF-20E Super Tigereye!
