Benny Howard built this four-place cabin monoplane as a racer. He named it "Mister Mulligan, Type # DGA-6. DGA stood for Damn Good Airplane. It won the Bendix(trans-continental)and Thompson(closed-course pylon) Trophy Races in 1935. My "What-if?" build is based on a simple premise. The U.S. military was so impressed they contracted Benny Howard to build fast courier aircraft for the Army and Navy. This one is an Army aircraft. Benny Howard really did build a series of light transport aircraft, that were very similar in appearance to Mister Mulligan, for both services in WW2 with his DGA-15 series of aircraft.

This is the 60 year-old Hawk 1/48th kit. I scratched an interior(the kit had none), replaced the landing gear spreader bar with bracing struts. and gave it a period U.S. Army Air Corps paint job with Humbrol and Xtracolor paint, hand-brushed as I don't own an airbrush.. The markings are from the scrap-box. I mounted it on an old Airfix stand, as I mount all of my 1/48 and box-scale models on stands to save shelf space.

I have built a couple of these kits(they have been repopped by Testors)as the racing version over the years, but I like this one the best due to its eye-popping color scheme.
Adios, Larry.
