Title: ZOmbiE buILd 1: Chevy street PickUp 1/24
Post by: Sticky Fingers on March 03, 2013, 03:00:58 PM
Zombies! Yay! ;D

I have at least four ideas now for this Theme build (one in 1/12, one 1/24, one 1/35 and one 120mm) and I don't know if I am going through with all of them as two of those will be very time consuming. On the other hand, there's no set end-date, so who knows.

I hereby present to you build number one:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0524_zps883ce81f.jpg&hash=a1c8903de1ef38a4b435c70efe5388cb188c7e5d)

And the moment I got the green light I started cutting (https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2Femoticons%2Flthrfaceani.gif&hash=cd4ea0c47dcc2a1019f158eede5688428fb813d8)!

The radiator will be repositioned onto the truck bed; less chance of damage caused by flying bodyparts...

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0525_zpsee0c7d4a.jpg&hash=0fe09873c544711e0211a65a8434d3488663dfc9)

Can't wait to see what you lot come up with! Have fun

edit: The backstory, just like most of the build itself, will be made up as I go along.

They only read "Better Tomb & Graveyard" or "Brain Surgeons & Fry Cooks"  magazines anyway.  ;D :D

Will there be a roll bar and a zombie proof cage around the cab?

There will be some armourment, to keep the meanees on the outside, yes, but no rollcage.
This is a lousy kit, by the way. Brittle plastic, flash all over the place, loadbearing parts with no contact points (for example: the axles are glued on to the leafsprings, but where you do that is up to you) and very soft detail. Nag nag nag

I decided to put some other wheels under this thing, and I had the perfect set in the spares-stash:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0537_zpsd95613e4.jpg&hash=4ecf400ffdaa08e6375bc073ad701c197143a9bf)

They're glued in place, so no rotating wheels, but that's okay, if I want to play with my cars I get out the Hot Wheels ;D
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0539_zpsbcd4c7d3.jpg&hash=f2704d86fbc14368e569a9710f7536ad8cd4aad8)

Here's somethingto help zombies get out of my way:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0545_zpsc5b6ac80.jpg&hash=e28501690f0ca5bb2541adc59623fc0423b7d815)

And here's something to keep 'em out of my path when I'm reversing:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FDSC_0546_zps8c33124e.jpg&hash=f18b03d2308890ec192a0d59e9b99a1dfb95b1ef)

I like it! That will turn the walkers into crawlers, no doubt!
May I suggest fender flares to keep zombie fluids off the doors and windshield?

Every self respecting apocalyptic vehicle needs a Zombie plow.

And the idea of a back plane to double the effect is brilliant !

That should have been a rule !

Looking good so far. I found one kit in the stash, but not sure if I want to use it as I always had another plan for it, but we'll see......but I'm going to grab a pick-up sometime this weekend, hopefully !

Maybe my plan is to just hang back and gather cool ideas from all you guys !

But what to use in the store while gathering that vital liquid refreshment and survival snacks?
Might I suggest a starting point for equipment in the back of your truck?

I'd just reverse into the store, stay in the car and get whatever I can reach. Alternatively: have a volunteer in the truckbed to do the shopping ;D

That would look like part of the Blues Brothers movie driving through the mall with the police chasing them.

Or like the security camera shots of people crashing through convenience store front windows to rob the place.
Hey, in zombie territory, do what you gotta do.

Progress (that doesn't mean finished) on the plow:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi120.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo182%2Fbrandzai%2FIMG_4274_zps06c597b8.jpg&hash=d023c3f5ea2ac23cd78eabe37aedf3fe043bf6a2)

And on the rear window:

I found a good way to simulate a torch cut edge is to drag the edge of the sheet plastic perpendicularly across 120 grit sandpaper. This leaves the edge nice and rough with visable cut  marks.
Why is the plow green? Zombie fluids?

Because it's yellow?

Instead of sandpaper I use a jewelers file for edges of 'metal' because that leaves a nicer pattern.

OK, greenish yellow or yellowish green?

Like a take on the old Olympia beer commercial sort of said "It's the lighting".

One or two questions:
1) Are you going to have the plow 'stand off' enough to clear the hood when it swings up in it's 'normal' travel?
2) Are the winshield wipers going 'Bye Bye' seeing as there is no windshield glass?
When it was in green paint it looked like the old CUVs (Civilian Utility Vehicle) you could get dirt cheap at military auction. I'm liking this look. The basic Forrest Green paint and a badly masked, similar but not perfect color match 'hose job' of painting over the military markings on the fenders and doors would make it look the part.
But it is your project. Carry on.

Couple of answers

The plow is welded in place. It's the apocalypse. No time to come up with engineered pivot points. There are scavengers on the other side of the garage door, and they want my flesh...

I'm in a hurry. The wipers are not in my way, so I leave 'em where they are.

It was never green.

I meant just set father out to allow the hood to open.
I think your camera or lighting has a tendicy toward making things green. (Reply #5, photo 2).

Some Fuel Jerrycans:

So is there going to be a hole or holes in the bed front to suck air into the radiator? How detailed will you be going on this build?
