Title: Which is better?
Post by: rickshaw on October 10, 2012, 05:45:23 PM
I'm after a  1/72 F-101B Voodoo kit.  I have a choice on Evilbay of either a Revell one or a Matchbox one.  Taking into account the presence of "trenches" on the Matchbox one, which is better?   Is the Revell one an old, old reissue?

This:

The Revell kit you show is the old Monogram kit in the latest Revell (USA) reboxing and is in 1:48. A very good oldie, but in the wrong scale for you.
The Revell kit in 1:72 is # 4456 and looks like this (http://www.scalemates.com/products/product.php?id=137190).
There is also a Revell-Germany kit in 1:72 (the first issue of the above one), which is simply perfect. Forget about the Matchbox kit!
The Revell(Ger.) kit (http://www.scalemates.com/products/product.php?id=137301) in 1:72 is No.4321 or 04321.
I have both Revell kits. Found the small 1:72 kit (Revell Ger.) on ebay 2 years ago with very bad decals (the kit has been stored up in a wet basement or shed for long time). Had to pay only 10-12$ for it. The 1:48 kit is the latest reissue in mint condition from "Michael's" with 50% rebate coupon for ca. 16.00$. Both deals were prefect! Now I'm just waiting to retire (if ever!) and build this nice bird:

Thanks.  I used the first Revell F-101 picture I found that looked vaguely like the one I'm interested in on EvilBay.  You've got the correct one.  I'll bid on that, rather than the Matchbox one.

Agreed the Revell kit is perfect. Guys around hear only buy the Matchbox kit to steal the little canoe camera thing to whif up other birds....like the Revell one !

I've got one of each, the 1/72 Revell kit is a really good kit for it's age and is very nicely detailed. Not much to do to enhance it. The Matchbox one is not too bad, typical matchbox but it has an extra nose and decal option to do a RF-101B version which is why I bought it.

Evidently the 1/72 F-101 moulds were cut by Ace in Korea for Revell-Monogram/Revell AG from the
original fuselage and wing patterns used for the Monogram 1/48th F-101. Ace also did the 1/72nd
F-105 and F-89 from the same period.
