Title: Supertom's What-If Blog
Post by: Supertom on March 21, 2012, 09:56:34 AM
Just thought I'd start this blog to explore the settings for this section.  It's a work in progress.  Oh, and I'll post up my thoughts on Whiffery as well.

You can lock your blog so that only you can post (mind you, admins can still make changes if you've been cheeky).  You can do that by clicking on "Additional Options" (to the left, below the text box), and checking on "Lock this topic."  You can still post since you're the originator of the blog.  You can unlock it by going back to said options and unchecking the box.

Current ideas:

F/FB-14.  Australian Tomcats with air-to-ground capability for Aussierama.  What if Australia went with the F-14 instead of the F-111?  The RAAF bought a fighter/interceptor version and a fighter/bomber version.  I think I will do one with 1970's markings and perhaps one close to retirement.

MiG-23K "Tomcatski" - Looks like an F-14 and MiG-23 squished together.  Long-term project.  Most bits have been obtained.

Well, I finally started on my FB-14 this weekend.  Nothing too exciting, started painting the cockpit.  Will be slapping on GBU-15 and Pave Tack pod for this one.

Slowly easing my way back. Spent the past year and a half dealing with work and gotten to the point of not wanting to be indoors too much, so I did some outdoor hobbies. The bug has bitten again and I'm ready! Now, I'm just trying to decide what to build.

Yeah Toms got his mojo back

As to what to build try something new and straight forward to get you in the mood or see what grabs you from the stash see what takes your fancy

The FB-14 Bombcat still sounds interesting. Look what happened to the F-15 when it got turned into the Strike Eagle!

Yeah, I still have my Aussie FB-14 on the workbench, and it so happens that my quick build is an Italeri MB326 with some extra Aussie markings. Just need to decide on ordnance. I might get ambitious later and start on that Super Strike Gripen I've been toying with.

Thanks everyone! So I've compiled a list of my what-if projects that haven't gotten off the ground yet:

ATB B-2 with real-world markings
PLAAF Tu-22/26
Nimrod replacement using EC-135 ARIA as base with CFM-56 engines from OGL
SAAB Super Strike Gripen
Aussie FB-14

Once again I'm a little overambitious. I'll shelve the first 3 for now as they're larger ones and concentrate on easier ones, like the Aussie FB-14 to get myself back in the groove. You guys gotta keep prodding at me!

The FB-14 and the Strike Grippen both sound like fun. The FB-14 with a Pave Tack pod would curl some hair.

Speaking of the Aussie Tomcat, does anyone have any references for the gray splinter scheme the RAAF used in their Mirage IIIO's? I keep finding the 2-tone gray-green scheme instead.

Oops, nevermind, found it! You can find it on Aussiemodeler.com's review of the HPM Mirage IIIO by the way.

I was looking at your F-20, and somehow it got me thinking...  :o  ;D If you take the F-20 and give it a bigger wing, move it back on the fuselage and put the horizontal stabs on the intakes, you almost get a Gripen... ;D Oh well, that seems like another whif on the list...  ;D

So I hear speculation that the Greek government will decide to throw in their lot with the Russians to end this economic stalemate. Is it bad that the first thing I thought would be "Su-35s to replace cancelled Typhoons?"

Nope. They'd look soooo good in that A-7 camo all dirty and greasy.

Not at all Tom. A friend of mine's first thought was " will I need Roubles then ?" when I told her that  ;D She's off to Crete in the summer so at the moment it's anybody's guess what they will be using come August.

So it's been a while since I posted to here, but here's a record: two whiffs finished this year! I will have to make a commitment to finish more next year. Probably get my butt started on that Super Strike Gripen I've always been talking about....

So this is Hasegawa's Ace Combat ASF-X Shinden II, 1/72, out of the box, with a Have Glass-y paint job instead of the boring old gray/gray scheme the kit suggested. I experimented with mixing Citadel grays and metallics to get the finish, along with various weathering and pastels to give it that stained look.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L3ci24z5aIg/ViECeeFUQaI/AAAAAAAAFP4/w_MO9KcqW1g/s912-Ic42/Photo%252520Oct%25252016%25252C%2525203%25252012%25252051%252520AM.jpg)

Anyway I'll post more pics when I've taken proper photos instead of in that paint booth.

Very nice job on that Tom --

Not knowing what it is I did a google image search about it, but I've got a question.  I haven't watched any of this show so I'm interested to know does the tail plane flap up and down then --- there's pictures of it in all various positions.

Yep, they flap about alright... ;D They move up and down depending on lift area needed to increase control at slower speeds or decrease drag during high speeds. You can see them pretty good here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OA2aeSergg

Well, what with talk on the interwebs that the F-35 is way too expensive and perhaps a buy of new-build F-15s and F-16s is in order to fill in the gaps, perhaps it's time for a Silent Eagle in USAF markings.... dibs!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I'm back again. I've finally cleaned up the basement and I'm no longer working in a pit of despair. Also, I bought the new Italeri Su-34 rebox on a whim because of those Indian Air Force markings. I've got tons of bits left over from an Su-30MKK build, like those Sorbtsiya ECM pods, and I'm gonna scratchbuild some. I think an Indian Platypus would look cool.

Good lord I really need to sit down and get on with it! OK, I got distracted by a baby. Oh did I mention I have a kid now? Anyway I need to get back to whatiffing. So I'm going to vomit out all of my projects so I don't forget them.

BLEAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH....

Super Strike Gripen (2-engine, larger Gripen)
Indian Platypus (working on a 3D Brahmos)
F-15G because the USAF had way more money and got to retire their F-4Gs and replace them with F-15Gs like they wanted
Mistaken F-22 (there's a story with that)
RAF B-1 (already in progress, long stalled, still thinking of a name. Doesn't have to be start with the letter V, right?)

OK, somebody prod me if I wander off again.
