Title: East Riding of Yorkshire Model Show, 2nd September
Post by: Aircav on February 29, 2012, 12:08:11 PM
Spotted this in the IPMS mag, the show is at Driffield Showground, Kellythorpe, Driffield, East Yorkshire, YO25 9DN on the 2nd September. Its the first show Bridlington & Wolds Scale Model Club has put on so I'll try and get my local club booked for some space.  ;D

It be rude not go since I moan about the lack of shows locally.

For anyone staying over, there's some accomdation in Driffield, more in Bridlington only a short drive away.  There's also a fair bit going on in the local area that'd be of interest to modellers, the bunker at RAF Holmpton, Yorkshire Air Museum, Fort Paul, National Rail Musuem at York, Streetlife Museum in Hull, Scarborough Castle, Jorvik Viking Centre, wartime enplacements at Spurn Point.

If anyone is, give me a shout & I can probably arrange to meet up.

Mossie, the bunker at RAF Holmpton is closed this year because the main ventilation fan broke down and needs expensive replacement. Considering it's been working for 50+ years that's not too bad!

I would attend this show if I wasn't going to Croatia on a charity drive.

Ah, thanks Nick!  I was hoping to go up there again with a mate this summer, he's just moved a short distance from there.  I guess it'll have to be next year.

Like you say, not too bad service for a fifty odd year old fan!  Just a shame it's shut down the museum for the whole year.  I've a little experience with air con systems, that would have to be a pretty huge fan to do enough air changes to prevent contamination of the air supply and will be a major job to replace.  I love the pics on the news page of all that fifties plant and switch gear!

IPMS Tyneside has a stand so a small scale outing for The Alternate Spitfire display is in order.  Probably the ones closest to hand, ie Spitefuls.

Looking forward to it.  Hope the cafe is good - it'll have to go a long way to beat the one at Darlo.

Unfortunately it's coinciding with a leaving do the night before for a mate who's heading overseas.  Haven't been out with these lads in some time, but when we were younger they tended to be heavy sessions!  I'll have to see how I go as I can't drink like that anymore...

And avoid kebabs.  You're better off eating a tin of Pedigree chunks.

Had a good show today, nice and warm especially as I was sat next to the steel clading of the building with the sun shining onto it. The show itself was smallish but it's their first and next year it'll be in a bigger building so hopefully we'll be going again plus we got asked if we (Langley Moor Model Club) would like to attend the Hudersfield show next year and I said yes.
Pictures I took today are to follow.  ;)

It was small but had a good atmosphere.  Bit light on traders though but the weather was nice.  Definitely going again next year.  Good day out all round.

Couldn't come unfortunatly, we had the grandchildren  which was nice. I went to Halifax after they went home and spent my money on a He-59. Oh God me and biplanes are never a good mix.

Got to start somewhere, haven't they?  If you don't support the grassroots, the larger ones start to dry up.  The Nationals twenty years ago wasn't much bigger - some of the older hands will back me up.  Lots of the larger shows will start to die if people aren't prepared to support them - look at the Scots nationals, massive hall, reasonable venue but fewer and people are going for a variety of reasons and as a result it's slowly dying.  A return to smaller, more local and better attended (because they're shorter journeys, lower petrol costs) may be what the hobby needs in the UK.  But if you're not prepared to support them then you'll lose them.

It isn't just about looking at the models or buying stuff, but getting inspiration, talking to people and bouncing ideas. Catching up with old friends, etc.

All model shows must be supported regardless of their size!! North of the border we are very restricted to the number and sizes of the model shows that are on the go each year. Apart from the bigger ones Perth and Glasgow, I am aware of other smaller shows, Cupar, Elgin and Dundee which sadly for both Cupar and Elgin I have not been able to attend although I have seen the Dundee show grow in recent years and although it is a small venue it is worth supporting. Strangely enough I seem to recall highlighting the Dundee show both this year and last year and probably the year before, and the need for a "Whatif" presence yet so far no one has ever had the balls to make any effort to go. There are certainly enough members North of the border who would help fill any table or tables required and this would not require the members south of the border to make the trip for just the one day and the associated costs. A few years ago one of the trader had made the effort to travel all the way up from the extreme South so its not impossible to make the effort. Sadly the costs of travel are now a serious factor with the high fuel prices but does non one know how to car share??? There are additional factors such as weather which can affect these shows as can event clashes on the same date. Model shows must be supported no matter where they are otherwise they will all die off and that starts at the small end first of all.

I went to the Glasgow show from Leeds once, and it was a dam good show. But I have not been able to go since due to travel costs +/- the cost of staying overnight for a one day show.
I am working on SWMBO to bring her for a "shopping trip" as her family are from there -  but that'll cost a lot more!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed it.....as Lee said, a small show "but perfectly formed".....the lack of kit sellers meant that the undertable sales was thriving (I was very happy to say!!)
Lots of chat, banter...the time flew by.
Going again??....too right!!!

OK, small shows are good; been to lots, but the large shows are good too, provided the public show an interest.
Sutton Coldfield next weekend, Brampton on September 30th, then Newark.....the pace is hotting up.

;D
