Title: USAAF P-72 Corsair, England 1944
Post by: AeroplaneDriver on February 06, 2012, 08:21:34 PM
There's already an in-progress thread for this build, but I just got my 'good' camera back and managed some better pics so I thought I'd post here.

Quick backstory is that a large number of F-4U-1Ds were diverted to the USAAF in 1943 after Nazi saboteurs caused extensive damage to the Republic factory in Farmingdale, NY, shutting down P-47 production for several months.  In USAAF service the Corsair was the P-72.  This example, "Little Chief" was flown by Lt. Frank Klibbe of the 61st Pursuit Squadron, and is shown as it appeared in May 1944.

One wonders what the P-47 pilots would think of this "lightweight, under-gunned" bird in their midst!!
