Here we are....
Having always zillions of ideas and projects for a what-if model (and I guess I'm not the only one here...), I finally manage to build one....
I've been always playing with the idea of
What-if the X-29 would have gone into production....
Let's assume, that something went wrong with the lightweight fighter project and both XF-16 and XF-17 were finally cancelled.
Big mistake made in Washington, because the Air Force could not afford as much F-15 as they wanted and they're looking for an air/air fighter. Cheaper, very agile and ASAP operational. How good that the NASA was testing FSW X-29.... ;)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-29.jpg&hash=7d76b84b27af2464f30dd3bd8bd50563f26fe63f)
Modifications for the Air Force were:
New radar (APG-67) (Taken from the F-20)
Radar Warning System
Chaff n Flares
IFF
ACES II Ejection Seat
Weapons Management System
CRT Displays
2x Pontiac M39 20mm Guns
First I had to find a "Sharknose"
The Italeri Kit was once released with a shark nose and I decided to go for this one
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-291.jpg&hash=e1b0373ed38bae12359b02c9b7b02c692a7d1bcd)
A little bit more of adjustment...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-292.jpg&hash=ff1eaa0ebd78ba967b8231ac7e1c5ff64281d5bf)
It didn't look bad from profile....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-293.jpg&hash=c4c3f738a5fc9c32bb86b6d0d49c66e3e52dc1bc)
And I wanted to call the F-29 actually "Bat"
But this looked more like a Duck :banghead:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-294.jpg&hash=a1344a7cc0f2fe6bee5a966161a06bfbcc86160a)
Back to square one...
New search
I was sure that the sharknose would fit, but Italeri must have done something wrong there.
I took Hasegawa's F-20, which also has such a radom.
And there's a slight difference
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-296.jpg&hash=17eff6e8745415869ccae6a0f27c809100386a99)
I didn't want to "canibalize" a F-20 for this and after having discussed it with a friend, he reminded me that somebody casted some sharknoses a while ago. Fortunately he had some spare in his stash....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2FF-297.jpg&hash=81483f9f9d862db3988b8ec6597c4c5cd8123c89)
(Little comparison with the X-29 and F-29 "Ducknose" ;D)

Think I like the new nose job better than the duck.
As for markings, can't go wrong with Montana ANG

That's right! The new nose looks better  I am not that big fan of the ducknose. I will probably modify my Italeri F-19 for this reason
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aircraftresourcecenter.com%2FGal1%2F501-600%2Fgal550_F-19_Le%2FF-19_Stealth.6.jpg&hash=b74cc2ed45814d6c189d15c5fe62187c366d5313)

A bientot / Frederic
Now that's an exercise in development work if ever I saw one Bearmatt! Well done, it looks pretty darn good now.
F-29 Platypus?
"Encore une victoire des canards !! COIN COIN !!" (Again a ducks' victory !! Famous publicity ad for an SC Johnson toilet cleaner ;D)
I like this FSW plane, and... turn it into an operationnal plane would be nice :)

What that man said!
Either that or 318 FIS which used to fly out of McChord AFB.
Thanks for the comments.
@ Dragon
Platypus! That would be also a nice name and even better exercise to turn the F-29 in a double seater type Su-34 or Hunter / EE Lightning
@ Phil & Upnorth
I tried first with South Carolina ANG....
But the vertical stab of the F-29 is very often too small for F-16 decals... :banghead:
But the Montana could fit and the (grey) scheme would look perfect on it
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2F132f5660.jpg&hash=bfe9d8255c608a297c4b59a0fbf6d886615e6f2b)

Rescribing took most of time. Lots of dymo tape and a scribing template. I use dentist tools for scribing. It works very well.
I also had to drill the holes for the 20mm gun ports.
The guns will be made of injection needles.
The most challenging is to keep everything symmetrical...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325269044.jpg&hash=c71dc6a3ca9634754e8f7bafa6eeccba0d8b0009)
There was not too much sanding.
Hasegawa quality and no bigger mods on this project helped (not as on sharkit's McDonnell Model 60...)
The most problematic parts on this kit are the air inlets
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325270194.jpg&hash=d1ee7611b4796a7dff3ad1f3953d3c6d93b4d689)

Armament should be something like this
2x AIM-9L
2x AMRAAM
Don't know yet, if I'll mount the AMRAAM's at the wing tips. Looks a little bit weird, but F-16s have it also like this. And they would not "interfere" with the canards...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325271281.jpg&hash=a25718df4f16806515a482be79e06b01b73d6714)
Maybe you can put the Slammers under the fuselage ? Something like the Aphid under the MiG-23
I tried different spots, but this F-29 has not really much space...
The AMRAAMS could be located between fuselage and wings, like on the Hornet, tho way more to the aft.
Under the air inlet there's also little space and on the centerline neither, because of the gear doors...
Best would be some double launcher on a wing station...
Or like the Sepecat Jaguar, on the top of the wings....
Did I mention that it was a Block 60?.... ;)

Let's give some color
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2FWhat-if%2FUSAF%2520F-29C%2Fdad7d6b3.jpg&hash=91f46e31e8717f7f7db15beb3d0defa1ca7e58ac)
I used first time xtracolor acryls....
And I'm not convinced of it, at all.
Not very airbrushfriendly (stuck needle all the time), tho I tried different thinners and pressures....
And they don't adhere very well. With this I had all along problems...
In order to continue work, you have to wait at least 12hrs. With Model Master Acryls you can work on after 30mins....
Recently I tried to skip the base coating in order to keep the paint job as thin as possible, but maybe I should reconsider this, when I'm not using MM Acryls....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325333326.jpg&hash=66005bb6be1c4584e337767019a45ab02bd97dcd)
The radar warners where made of basic plastic rods. Glued and sawed them and then sanded.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325339173.jpg&hash=bf4e212e7149144e01f20a8c416b45eac23fd04c)
Standard FS colors where used.
FS36375
FS36320
FS36270
FS36118

I tried again some decal versions, but I find them either too colorful and / or too big for this tail...
Still have some time to think of which one it will be.
Could also imagine a "WP" or " HL"....

I was masking for the black cockpit glare...

But finally I got to the point of weathering the "Bat"

Tho I've painted the original exhaust already, I'll probably replace it with the F-404 from Aires
Looks just better.
Need to cut the heatshield petals from the original and add it to the Resin part

Happy new year to all whiffers!
Bearmatt
Finally I sticked to this version

The paint- and weatheringjob looks very good, and with the decals added it really starts to look convincing.
How did combining the resin and plastic exhaust-bits turn out?
I like the general look of this plane, look so real ;)
scary goodness
Thanks for the words!
It's moving slowly (but steady) to completion....
Maybe it will be done by this weekend
@ Sticky Fingers:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325805323.jpg&hash=fb371984208e3d760113c70b536a480b52e10657)

Worked well. Not too much fuzz. The cutting part was a little bit tricky. I screwed up one original hasegawa nozzle unfortunately. But as my stash is not small... I found some spare one
Other than that, the resin afterburner liner had to be turned to a smaller (outer) diameter, in order to fit into the white part (heatshield petals).
Still don't know if I'm going to use this exhaust, because I would have to drill a 1" hole in my F-29 rears.... And I'm afraid of hearing that "craaack" of both fuselage sides....
This would be a master disaster at this point! :-\
Careful filing as opposed to drilling would be the way to go I think. Might take a while, but much safer. Looks really good (I never thought I'd say that about something in that GREY colour scheme)!
I like the forward swept wing concept, and you've done a great job with this one. Will you leave it "clean" or will it have an assortment of missiles hanging underneath it when you're done?
Ok... Now it's done and everything worked out well, tho it took me quite a while to get there.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1184.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz334%2Fbearmatt%2F1325894887.jpg&hash=1c8d9c0c21af65060b24544cfe4de5e271f68fb2)

I started with drilling up to approx 1/4" and then carried on with filing....
@ pyro-manic, thanks for the hint. Didn't think of using this option, but it worked well and was probably the only way to do it.
@ lemon jello. Yes, I intend to add a pair of sidewinders and a pair of amraam's.
Almost done....
But details, details, details

amazing work :) can´t wait to see it finished :P
i remember playing a old game F29 retaliator back on old pentium 386, my favourite plane :) brings back memories ;)
 what a beauty!
Really makes "boring" grey look attractive
Thanks folks!
Well... vacations are over and I'm back to work... and modeling rythm is consequently slowing down
There's not much left to do and I really hope being done with it till next weekend, so I could take some photos during daylight...
Need to finish the ejection seat and find some decent pitot tube.
Meanwhile I scratch build the HUD and painted the anti-collision lights

Love that you made it a Hill bird.
Great job.
It looks so right!
Thx to everybody for the nice words!
I took some indoor photos today with another camera. (tho still not that happy with the quality...)
There's a german scale modeler with a nice "how to do it" description. If anybody wants to try and read it.... ;)

One more time is time for me to say:      So nice and beautiful!!
Awesome looking F-29! It looks like it's ready to take a bite out of another planes rear end. I've been looking to do something like that with my X-29, definitly need to get started on that now! Thanks for the great pics too!
Yes, this F-29C is a fierce dogfighter...
Not many escaped back then.... ;)
Love the photo with the prototype
ditto the above a great touch of what should have been the history..great work sir.  ;D
Nice, very nice!
Wow...that's just gorgeous ! Sorry I missed the original thread....and I agree, the second nose suits her way better. It's easy to see why the finished product looks so good, you sure put alot of work into it !
Agreed, the F-29C looks fantastic, although I would have gone with the Oregon ANG or 318th FIS, personally. It would be cool to see an F-29 in an Aggressor scheme :P
Excellent - looking at the summary, you put a lot of effort into this build, and it shows.
Ian
Thx!
Agree, the Oregon ANG would have looked superb. But in fact, most of the schemes do not fit the F-29 tail, because of its size....
As for the F-29 as an aggressor (http://spasticforplastic.1hwy.com/snapshots.html).....
Unfortunately I never managed to find more pics of that beauty....
But maybe the builder is reading this forum here....who knows!?
Very pretty thing!
