Title: TU-128 ASAT Missile Platform Idea
Post by: Cobra on July 16, 2011, 12:23:17 AM
Hey Guys, i was surfing Google when a Question Hit:What If the Tu-128 was used as the Basis for an ASAT Missile Platform to Destroy Spy Satellites? i don't know if soviets ever considered it for that. Would it work? thanks for Looking.Dan

Dan, given that the Fiddler is a big ship, I can't see why it couldn't haul a couple of ASAT sized weapons at least.  Whether the Sovs would have the technical capacity to sort out the intercept vehicle portion of the unit is another matter entirely.  I'd think a Soviet ASATski would be an altogether larger weapon (at least until the MiG-29/Su-27 era)

How about an even BIGGER  ship - the Tupolev TU-22? I already built one as a patrol/interceptor variant. How about an ASAT platform carrying one (or two?) of those whopping great missiles from the re released Airfix TSR-2?  I reckon it would look good and, the TU-22 is a seriously nice looking aeroplane as well!! ;D Might be possible to get one in the bomb bay?

Hmmmm.........................!! :o

How about also fitting the Tu-22 with a damn great rocket motor in place of the tail turret to give it bit more oomph before launching the ASAT?

As for missiles, well remember that the Tu-22 carried the AS-4 Kitchen which was damned big....

Thanks.

I chose the camo scheme because I don't really like natural metal finishes - especially as I don't own an airbrush. Any natural finishes I do are therefore using a variety of good old Plasticote / Halfords rattle cans! I based the camo scheme on an actual SU-27 scheme.

I just checked my one remaining TU-22 kit & of course it HAD to be the one with the AS-4 missile!! No bomb bay!! :banghead: Still, Might be fun - I never thought about the rocket in the tail!! ;D

Don't worry Dan. I have no intention of stealing your idea . My personal preference would be the TU-22 if only because it's easier to get hold of than the (presumably?) A- model TU-128?

Could you get a pair of those TSR-2 anti- Meteor ( or whatever they are) missiles under the wings of your TU-128? Might be worth investigating . It would look mean as hell if you could! :o
