Title: BAC LIGHTNING 2000 - Lightning mix with Tornado
Post by: G.Marcat on March 09, 2011, 12:27:58 PM
First new project for 2011.

Why not  modernize the venerable E.E./BAC LIGHTNING and let him face the threats of the years 2000???
This is the excuse to let me add at the Lightning some parts stolen from the Tornado.

This is the usual my preparatory drawing:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frglegw.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1p-_jfyC6FOvnDnvgVcC6jJXLigyYnozBU1Xk3gxE3NQQl4rB85t0UhCh7IdcqvqsEs2XxGG-qNjIpuVpiE5eRdTg1--W98BkY%2Flightning-tornado-preview.jpg&hash=1ea199cec33b8af60be13b24ee2da519331eae53)

Take it only as an idea, the finished model could be a little different, however this is the concept.

The first change of mind was replace the Tornado IDS radome with the more modern Tornado ADV's nose.

Dumb Question:  Where is the Air Intake, or am I missing it??

Other than that, I love the idea.

Honestly, in the drawing there is NOT air intake, I forgot it....

The my plan is of to do an air intake as in the F-8 CRUSADER.
If this will be not possible, I have a "B" plan in mind but hope of to be able to do the F-8 intake.

So maybe something like this?

Might be a bit tight for intake air, but don't let reality get in the way of a cool idea .

Greg

EXACTLY, this is a possible solution as I have in mind.

Thank You for the drawing.

Another idea might be to use side intakes either like the Rafale or even like the Tu-98:

My first contribution (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,279.60.html) was a chin intake on the Lightning P.8:

And one of my first contributions was a three-engined Lightning with a chin intake (bigger radome moved to top of existing intake) for the lower engine and F-106-style shoulder intakes for the top two engines:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi35.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fd165%2Fhws5mp%2FThe%2520Whiffery%2FlightningMk13Fin.jpg&hash=341156eb4fd628b13052ef3119bca813b10109ba)

This layout could be adapted to a normal twin-engined Lightning too: feel free to nick it if you wish.

AND a tailless delta wing..... (well kinda: aerodynamics about like the X-32 JSF)

I'm collecting the bits for one too. Got various Lightnings and F-104s (for the upper intakes) and the canopy will be Javelin T.3. Not sure about the wing: TSR.2 is ideal but.... :o  Another idea is to use a phantom wing: mounted on the sloping sides of the fuselage, the inner portion would slope downwards and the outer portion would be straight...

The fusealge mod is NOT straight forward though: you can't just splice a plate in between the top edges of it, rather you have to rotate the halves around the axis of the lower engine (which means taking a bit off the bottom) then adding partial opposite halves to the inside of the top edges.

Swing Wings? I don't like too much this solution.
I'm considering of to use the originals wings but with some variations.

BAC looked at a swing wing design for the Navy, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility

http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/lightning/history.php

(halfway down the page)

I did a Lightning F7 about 15 years ago.  Updated the radar to Sea Harrier Blue Fox and the engines to RB199s.  Canopy was stripped of it's heavy framing, with a wrap around windscreen.  Sidewinder and Skyflash missiles.

Really fancy doing it again!

I'm liking the ideas being thrown around here!

I especially like the wide F-86D type intake idea but more-so the chin & shoulder intakes of Weaver's design but keeping the rest more traditionally BAC Lightning...

...or, possibly that but with a high-mounted wing, so that the shoulder intakes are under the wing?

In the last week done something to bring forward the Lightning 2K.

This is the base kit:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pL2q-co0bsPinD-lfcHkWCL_udR_udxpzMyEEeZVociyK9rKPt8JlFP0zQ4DlB0cjMJyk1MHMFkVfmA3DVtRPAg%2Flightning-2000-4919.jpg%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=a7aabfe81a5ef5f4ba0ba1d260f5e057bf95b149)

Using the old ESCI TORNADO 1/48 as donor:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pd8xy6hQ-BPRxqfBAGnd-wh26KipAiBW3W-SIjOtfV8XoxI-liJsk9AOgbUst3I7zXdKCBdBVnxIYCryHpODMUA%2Flightning-2k-4944.JPG%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=e8869bbced0e998086769672b476e0330e6f2e5f)

I had  took from it the VERTICAL TAIL ASSEMBLY:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pz-QwvxrgGsRVIbeZBfYQKcY9f2whYZeECQPl4HyVR__RiuedmLJpIDrOd3-e8WcbDHgCL4aNtwXoRqxC5fcn6A%2Flightning-2k-4942.JPG%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=e465a38165905d1dfdab0abb87053eee5671158b)

After to have glued the two halves together I cut and sand the ECM blisters and the front air intake to "CLEAN" the shape of the tail.

The LIGHTNING's wheels on the main undercarriage  are  a little too small frontal section... A modern version of the Lightning must have a little more big tires.

Taken the Airfix half wheels  and glued on a piece of plasticard of around  1,5 millimeters:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pThpYgQDQj67k6XjLSgpZ6igNHqIgzOUk6FCGyIT1pNxP2H-ApRC1X0J37bNnt5uY6cqlE_5PXpaoPzZmKlvz_g%2Flightning-2k-4954.JPG%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=8a3b7a9d8b942b3aaed483249264ed991d92246e)

As the glue went dry I raw cut the shape of the wheels from the plasticard:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1ppe1Qt5urjQgWkzClY92Q-i0UwaU7OJ_6VsVL7kj-E7FZedfBU4_bZOtwzC4iUDkcUl0xvE_oLkX5U5qL9Mfn-A%2Flightning-2k-4955.JPG%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=045e3b7e900fbadef39dac5943efcad48a600776)

Carefully sanded the  plasticard at wheel level and then glued together the two modified  half wheels with the original half wheels.
This has given to  me  a little more wide tire:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1ppK88ZfmjliVSa-WDrGftF6WvNlmrqrbYjRdh-QbABXyVYImrEDMilr24IbajJugI4Kez_qiDQv1D-ffDC4wWZg%2Flightning-2k-4958.JPG%3Fpsid%3D1&hash=07ad167d251f6550b90c61fab125c3755cf47b04)

More in the next days.

Would a modern Lightning not need RWR?

And I hate to ask, but where do you plan on putting those wheels?

The plan is of to add a bulge on the top of the wing.

About the RWR: I could to add something later, but different from the shape of the Tornado's RWR.

The idea for the wing fairing is copied from the fairing you see on the PHANTOM's wing root (F-4C/D/E).
I think to add at the top of the wing a drop shaped fairing made with a 1.5/2 millimetres plasticard.

MTV please pimp my Lightning!

And some internal parts painted:

Hello, I'm proceeding slowly but however I'm bringing forward the Lightning 2000 everyday.

The last two days I have taken the decision of which shape to give at wings.

Delta? Variable Geometry? What?

Finally, this is the chosen scheme:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frglegw.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1ps94h17a35to4HYyvDlKVCzSiKuqRwVQWhJmFmW-4j3Q_PCiivyigemMSc4pfYC2NK4ahXD56y_pzAMg2k504VBk40fERyH1z%2FLIGHTNING-ALI-SPOSTATE-DIETRO.jpg&hash=e6bf285e5552348c6530c2941d2c3f47beb4c5d8)

As you can see it's a simple design. The originals wings have been moved few meters/feets more toward the center of the fuselage!!! Coupled with the shape of the horizontal tailplanes this change radically the view from above.

New work done:

Completed the cockpit tub and the modified instrument panel, painted the MB Mk10 resin seat, painting the wheels and other undercarriages parts:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pTgveNcfL41JlTon05Z0u18iVUEbmPBPZqK8egUZ62XbSHefgUqqRs8rvrT-rEpVRe3gGJp_nullKEgUPQihCww%2Flightning-2k-5006.JPG&hash=aca5f8effcea4a270682892f6beb3b38988ba03b)
Now it's time to modify the exhaust nozzle's zone.
Removed the shaped finger between the two exhaust's barrells:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pIoTd4GpLtNpPNqb8-w6WtGvDwp7u4OI2YkyMBdYFtDi3IG8C6sTUnYwpI_svmSQsqbd2wdSbtLcvkikPi98YMQ%2Flightning-2k-5018-1.jpg&hash=2617e05d5a43500a5ccaa87455284936f2efb162)
Modified the two exhausts from the Italeri's Tornado and taken away the last part from the nozzle, so typical of the RB-199 engines.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1p8Vus4evZktC_9W_x8dSrfVGLVtxbr09gnvFOG-6C2p7tN4hoOv9aS369AhRqd2K1ri6t7PBSttOeEhz15QVZAA%2Flightning-2k-5021.JPG&hash=ab04dc80349e7ca2eee9438acffb28c6c6ddf665)
And this is the modified exhaust:
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpublic.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pK7BPGr69aaml40RA_QgTaZ5px5IroUqAEpNCVNRy3YRFFhDuTgBiBV5AED1N1t7wSr8_2__0dtiLmJhZrpQ01A%2Flightning-2k-5031.JPG&hash=e9658fd8a86c233b4b8f83052bfda3127eacf551)
The impression is that the Lightning now have installed the Tornados RB-199 engines!!!

and finally yesterday night assembled the tail and the ADV radome to the Lightning's fuselage. The "monster" now look in this way:

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.modellismopiu.net%2Fm%2Bgallerie%2Fmain.php%3Fg2_view%3Dcore.DownloadItem%26amp%3Bg2_itemId%3D557750&hash=e38704c4755ba2392c43f533aa69c8adfdd9f324)

Now I have to see how to do the air intake.

Really... it look like a 50/60 Russian prototype. I don't like how it look now. On the other hand it look too much near to a F-86D SABRE.... I completely mishaped the upper part of the windshield- radome zone.

If the Lightning Airfix should be not so difficult to find and overpriced the my idea was to build another Lightning,  to cut it's original front part and to throw away  the Russian style nose at the purpose of to restore a more conventional LIGHTNINGish look.

Good news.. (Or at least I think this).

As said before the nose taken from the Tornado ADV applied to the my Lightning 2K was totally out of place. The my Lightning look like a Mig prototype.

This afternoon a surgical operation has been done: I have replaced the resin ADV nose with a more pleasantly shaped radome taken from a 1/48 Italeri's TORNADO IDS.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frglegw.blu.livefilestore.com%2Fy1pBYSmnMs3ZT98lY082bwOZ467zjFz_BWIC0w7ZCGSsMycz3Ezq4prRkGRshx6jOjwdiFtE8TCwKncHIy_cqYwHcQJDTIwoUkT%2Flightning2k-0265.JPG&hash=2ec515a4dd5fc03a6a5704ed75e367930cbe7c62)

Now the Lightning 2K like to me a little more.
The hard part now will be to level the edges of the new nose to the front fuselage but I have solved more of worst in the past.

I had to do the same thing with a past build. I cut a section out of the nose that looked like a thin wedge from the back of the cone to the point. Closed the top and bottom, a little putty and it worked quite well. Looking forward to more of your work. :)

After months of static in the past days I have sprayed a layer of Tamiya Primer in the zone where I did modifications.
As result I saw a lot of defects in the frontal zone where I did the more big number of works.

Today applied a lot of putty on the frontal zone to remedy all the spots and ridges.

I hope of to tame all these imperfections very fastly because the model is arrived at a good point.

The last two days put the hands on the Lightning 2K.

In the beginning rescribed completely the front of the kit as all the lines has gone lost.
Today managed to solve the issue related to the front wheel bay.

This was the hole of the front wheel bay this morning:

I have Super-glued a piece of plasticard in place:

and then smoothed the zone:

As usual, having done a mistake sanding the zone covered with putty, I have corrected this mistake applying a piece of ultra thin plasticard side to side:

Now I will cut out in the plasticard the wheel bay slot as in the original LIGHTNING.

This is how appear the air intake modified from me:

And this image show how appearn the rear fuselage looking from above now that I have glued two horizontal ailerons:

Another pair of works and the my Lightning 2K will be ready for the paint.

Finally started to paint the Lightning.

Choosen a simple scheme, the same scheme sported from the last LIGHTNING in service.

The upper surfaces are in DARK SEA GRAY (from Gunze):

Having loose a lot of time preparing the paint session I was able only to complete  a little portion of the kit. Tomorrow will complete the work.

As usual the weathering is OVERDONE... Will try to reduce it a bit in some areas.

Hello, If someone think I had left loose this project, the answer is NOT. ;D
The past year in the week from Christmas to New Year  I have applied the decals on it.

Not all the decals, only the most important part of these contained of the huge sheet enclosed with the Airfix kit.

As I did apply the decals, I loose interest in the model, it's usual.

A pair of months ago a bottle of ALCLAD BRONZE has been gone broke,
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi48.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff208%2Fitalian_o%2FWEB-bottiglietta-alclad-sfondata-2012-1883.jpg&hash=5d4588defeb34e6d743296b2ca2543f987fda7a0)
the colour has spreaded all over the work zone, some drops are fallen over the LIGHTNING.... So in the past week I have completed the repair of the droplets damages.

This is the Lightning 2K currrently:

Yup we all lose interest with models over time, then like this we pick them up again. No idea of why but it happens

Anyway good to see this one back

Very nice - I like the nose section very much.

I'd just say that it looks a little tail-heavy, the wings look a bit (relatively) set far back, so that it could almost be a delta wing?

It's a TRICKY DELTA.

I have set back the wings in the way them can be "in a false touch" with the horizontal elevators, if view from the perpendicular.

I thought that it was on purpose - but you never know...

Sometimes a whif turns out way different from waht one might have thought in the first place  ;) Very pretty thing!

Looking good to me! If you could take a pic of the front quarter or so to show off the inlet/radome combo. Nice work. This will have some scratching their heads.

I have actually 4/5 models at a good stage of completion but stopped.
For this reason I spent two years on almost every my model because of loss of interest on the project.

before of to start with every whatif  I do drawings using scanned 3 views of the original aircraft, but one thing is the drawing, another thing is the kit, in the case of this LIGHTNING was almost impossible to move more rearward the wings as I have would to do.

done:

But, it's the worst part I have made: I have done some changes of mind here in the front so the result is the two stage air intake: the first version was too much little, so I did an enlargement.
I have lost a lot of time improving this part of the kit, but the reult is not good.
The air intake is painted all black only for a purpose: to avoid at the observer look too much this zone..... less detail you see better is!

Looking very smart. With the wing that far back I reckon the tailplanes could be remounted on the nose for even tighter turning  ;D
