I'm guessing the SIG will be going, not read anything here yet. I've just arranged a 'swap' so I can be there.

dont know if im being the new improver idiot here, ( or if this part of the board need aditional clearances to see) but thats a dead link for me as of today.
so ill add my normal ill say hi to folks there, and ask if any one wants a copy of the space base 2000 book or the trympy s tank that i offered for sale/swap at telford last year, ( still got em) and if anyones got any 1:48 acadamy chally 1s ( or outhers of the tanks they did like the t 72) im still interested in aquiring them.
the sig has space at this one (as usual)
we are in the R&D collection hanger. Located between the FD2 and the Meteor.
The show opens to the public at 10am , set up is from 8am.
For those attending with models for the stand, The SIG's two models per member limit is in place, due to the limited table space that we have been allocated. (2 tables).
Thank you Martin
ok if i bring the TSR again and one of my RAF f-19s? Or would it be better if i brought 2 previusly undisplayed models, ( one of the 19s and either the F111 from the group build or my chally 1 AA tank).
the choice is yours
Shock and horror i know but i actually plan to be at this show :o :o :o :o
Unfortunately I'm travelling the following day, so have fun lads and I look forward to the piccies.
Shame I can't meet you in the flesh Tim

You where looking in the wrong place
Try looking behind the stand next time lol
The Hunter gather chap left his travel mug behind. Its in my care for now.
Now the worst bit
Some thieving individual of extremely questionable parentage helped them selves to a small box full of 16 blister packs containing a mix of Jet shinden sets and USAF baggage pods from the back of my car during set up. I did notice them missing at the time, but believed I had inadvertently left them at home. I have since turned the house, the garage, the loft and the car inside out and cant find any trace of them.
I dont for one second think its any member of the SIG or forum. So can all of you keep your eyes peeled at the shows or on ebay for them. I will then nail the scum bag who took em.
Thieving ba**ard! :banghead:
pretty much the same as what I said lol
That rather takes the icing off the cake (even if we'd already eaten them....)
It amazes me the lengths some tealeaves will go to just to get hold of something that must be of very limited interest. Not only that, if they'd bother to think long enough, or at all, they'd realise that stuff that esoteric has such a limited market that there's just a chance we'd all know each other!
What a prat.
We had a thief in our club. We *knew* he was at it, we just couldn't prove it. What tipped the balance? A £1 Aeroclub canopy. And we slung him out.
He was allegedly on Coke.

Coke ? our lot cant even find choc rolls and cake....................was there any Pepsi ??
Sickener Martin sorry to hear that, and after a reet good day an all
thankfully, who ever it was didnt get all the resin bits I had with me. only the bits I had packed in the clear blister packs Colin had kindly given to me. Cash value is quite small, and all is not lost.

Hmm,
Can't access that link Kit. It wouldn't happen to be under the UK Sig section would it?
Indeed it is, I didn't realise that section was so exclusive though.

i didnt even realise there was a 'secret' exclusive section to this forum!...........kinda makes a mockery of the 'all welcome' attitude that is portrayed

It's not that at all. It's just a part of the forum where those members who are also members of the UK IPMS What If Special Interest Group (which includes a few non UK residents) and the US IPMS Group can deal with any "business" matters such as show set up, themes for the Nationals etc.
Normally pictures from shows are posted in the main body of the website it's just that on this occasion for what ever reason they havn't been.
The UK and the US SIG's are not exclusive at all and are open to all IPMS members. The UK SIG also producers it's own quarterly Newsletter (I am the editor for my sins) and also provides a handy base camp at a fair number of UK model shows.
When I'm back from my travels I will start a thread on the general part of the Forum for the Cosford piccies and post them in to it. Won't be until after Easter though I'm afraid

I do understand your point and I'll talk to some people about it. Must admit I didn't realise it was hidden. I thought it was simply blocked to non SIG members with an explanation. You learn something new every day.
Chris
If the What-If SIG section is hidden from ordinary forum users then that needs changing and quickly IMHO. Keeping the content hidden is OK by me but not the actual forum header part.
It would be best done with the message 'This section is for members of the What-If SIG, to join this please PM Martin*'.
(*or whoever it may be).
I must admitt i do not like the idea of there being a part of the forum i cannot acess and i don't like the idea that it's not advertised.
I've been on here around 3 years now and have only just found out about it...........not good chaps, makes it look secret!!
My opinion is that if the IPMS what if SIG wants a forum maybe they should have their own and not make themselves look elitist and have a semi secret one here .........but hey thats just my 2 pence
Let's not go off the deep end please guys.
There is a need for an IPMS WhatIf SIG section as part of the this Forum, for the reasons that NARSES2 explains. It would seem likely that the way it's ended up, with some Forum members unable to even know that it exists, was an error and it makes sense to change it.
No 'secret society' area is or was intended.
[/oil on troubled waters mode]
nothing elitist about it, the sig area is purely for internal sig affairs. Votes on themes, funding, stand set up times ect.
In fact the bulk of the goings on in there are quite dull by comparison to the rest of the forum.
I suspect the reason the sig area is hidden from view to non sig members is a software limitation. It certainly wasnt the intention when it was created. Open to sig members (both UK and US sigs) to allow ease of internal management.

Why unless you are a member of the What-if Special Interest Group then the section has little interest for you. Its where they genally arrange shows, plan layouts, discuss SIG related issues and coordinate builds for displays so as not to clash. These discussion don't involve the general membership and nor should they. The What-if SIG has been associated with this website since at least 2002/3 and the admin team welcome its presence and involvement.
Its existence is no secret and has been mentioned many time before over the years, Martin H has made numerous posts over the years to promote the SIG and invite people to join who express an interest.
The only hiccuup has been that the show photos were mistakenly posted in the SIG section following on from a SIG show discussion rather than in the general forum where they normally appear.
The Admin Team
And for those who are really curious, here's a taste of the recent threads in the What-If SIG section....
Birthday Greetings - For Martin's Birthday
Shock Photos of OGL - Being rude about Martin! ;D
Newsletters - Mostly requests for articles and comments on the 2-monthly newsletter edited by Narses2 for us
Booking Hotels for SMW2011
Stand design and Labels for shows
AGM and meet up
What-If SIG polo shirts
Resin parts - Special modelling bits created by or for us and available firstly to SIG members.
Events - What shows the SIG are going to, who will be where and what models we're bringing.
SMW Display - What we plan on showing at the biggest show of the year.
I don't have access to the stats but I suspect that the SIG members provide about half the posts on the whole site. Can any admin prove me wrong?
I think you don't have to be a member of the IPMS UK/USA to join the SIG. We should advertise ourselves on this site more, especially how to join. Would a STICKY at the top of the General Modeling forum do?

My twopennorth.
1. The SIG never has and never will be elistist. All are welcome to join, irrespective of modelling ability, colour, age, gender, politics, stupidity, number of heads, etc. Technically, you should be an IPMS member to join a SIG but many SIG leaders turn a blind eye - the IPMS Committee want to enforce the rule but most SIG leaders aren't going to be their Gestapo. I wasn't an IPMS member when I joined the SIG in 1994 either.
2. It's a club. If you don't join, you don't get the benefits of being in that club. I'm not a member of the CIU so I don't get the benefits of their cheap beer. Do I complain? No, I just accept it. I don't have an axe to grind nor a personal agenda. I just get on with it. If I wanted to be a member, I would be. The same goes for the SIG.
I agree
Van
Nothing wrong with having a section of the forum for people who are in a particular club to discuss it's business privately: after, all there's no law or moral principle that says you can't have a private discussion face-to-face, so why not on-line?
However, I would STRONGLY urge the admin team to make the forum header visible to non-SIG members on the main menu, with note explaining why it's blocked to them (I'm not the expert, but I have seen this done on other forums which apparently use the same the software). Why? Because in the past, I've seen another forum, one that I cared about deeply, utterly, utterly destroyed by the sh1t storm that blew up when it came out that it had a secret section, even though said section was only created to protect certain members from aggressive cyber-stalking and trolling. No amount of explanation could repair the breach of trust, and I still know people who won't talk to each other IRL because of it.
Please don't let that happen here.
Just thought I'd throw in my bit here as well - there really isn't anything going on in there that would interest the non-SIG members - it's not some secret, exclusive society or whatnot, just a section for club business. It REALLY is just for the UK guys to organize events in the UK, like meeting locations, show tables, and various other items. This colonial doesn't even look at it much as it doesn't involve him (unless it has plans for retaking the continent).
As emphasized earlier, it's not a secret club where everybody in there is wearing tuxedos with masks and sipping sherry while making snide remarks about the riff-raff on the general forum or folks in robes hiding the secret existence of descendants of Jesus or some nonsense like that.
We told you not to mention that - no more Sherry for you! We'll have to change the name now...
Anyway, if you're not a SIG member and have no wish to join, why would you need to know that that section is there? So you can rail away against how you're allegedly barred? How you're badly treated for being kept in the dark? Conversely, as someone who pays his subs, why should those who haven't paid and who are not members have access to something I have to shell out my hard earned for?
The SIG is widely advertised and Martin says he's Gruppenfuhrer in his signature - for cliff's sake, the various forum members making noises now have even displayed as part of the SIG so how can they claim no knowledge?
It seems that, like so many other things these days, some people want everything for nothing. If you want the benefits of a club, you join said club. But if you don't join, you cannot complain about what goes on.
ok , this thread has drifted way off course. I would recommend that the member who started this thread or a member of the admin team lock it down.
