Title: 1/72 Hobby Boss Su-47 Berkut - side project
Post by: mchoo2005 on February 09, 2011, 05:52:32 AM
In the past week, I've been working on this side project on/off while waiting for paint/glue/putty to dry on my main project (F-22 whif aggressor). I'm treating this project as more of a distraction really....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2986.jpg&hash=9a0ee353ccf0b434a8b04b9586e3aeadc83d5281)

I will use this camo pattern... As far as the colour goes, I'll be more than likely using the same colours as the F-22 whif aggressor, just to make my life a tad easier.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FItaleri%2Ff22-aggressor%2F1668646.jpg&hash=c5ff05baedb1315119c381ab4e3db0b230aef42d)

Looking at the parts, I have a feeling that it's gonna be a quick build. I was initially going to build this as in-flight bird too, but... I'm not entirely certain anymore. Still somewhat inclined towards in-flight... I'll decide in the next day or two....

Anyway.... I noticed some weird protusions on the bottom fuselage. They're probably meant to be some kind of antenna, but I don't like the look of 'em, so I sanded 'em off. Besides, as far as I can tell from looking at limited number of pics avail on airliners.net, the real aircraft does not appear to have those.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2991.jpg&hash=b620e054846429ad8bb033456e94610403112268)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2990.jpg&hash=2f1507afa0223fc88c96a8a59aa9695aec7c7079)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2988.jpg&hash=aa3f9eb98fc2101161d038d32f8e4fec7b3ba43d)

Cockpit and seat are EXTREMELY basic and barren. Decals for side panels are too short. Also, the flight stick is grossly over-scaled (not to mention overly basic!). Oh well....   :-\

BTW... As can be seen in pic above, main gear wells are absolutely devoid of details! Which by itself makes me leaning more towards in-flight....

Read somewhere that Flanker cockpit colour is typically blue-green-ish. So, decided to mix up some Air Superiority Blue (LifeColor UA037 - FS35450) with Gunze H302 (Green FS34092). In hindsight, might've looked better if I had used Light Green or Lime Green... Oh well... never mind... The black was Tamiya X-18 (Semi-gloss black)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2995.jpg&hash=dc623f8ef64ec7ad355dddc474b3d31c31e6da58)

Glued the LERX underneath the top fuselage... Applied some putty... Will sand tomorrow....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2996.jpg&hash=dfd591a830916a6f63cff3e4f7ce755dcd91c58b)

Also glued the tub to the bottom fuselage...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2997.jpg&hash=abc1c0d09997eac8559de884dd5c0dabe777121d)

nice ;D

would be awesome as well to see a navalized version like in SP forums ;)

hmmm... wasn't the real Su-47's stick on the side?

Those protrusions look like badly clipped flow gates to me, and I'll bet those mouldings came sprue-less in the box? I have a Hobby Boss Fw-190D and it has exactly the same type of protrusions too.

There's always the possibility that Focke-Wulf and Sukhoi collaborated in this Whiff-World of course....  ;) ;D

That's what I was thinking too when I first saw 'em... one of the reasons why I simply removed 'em. :D

They actually came in sprue.

In general, the moulding quality was actually not that bad. In fact, I think the engraved lines are actually better than Italeri's

Thanks Qian!

Here's some update.....

I just noticed tonight some REALLY NASTY molding defect on the kit. Check out the pic below....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2998.jpg&hash=1191ed6a1a6f90e830b365a52f1bbddf436c690a)

Those curved lines were actually scratches. Judging by the look of 'em, it must've been bad mold, rather than scratched during packing and/or transit. Frustrating!  :banghead:

So what I've done is... I brushed highly thinned Tamiya putty over 'em. See the pic below... I'd need to re-scribe some of the panel lines. I hope there'll be no more nasty surprises lurking in the shadow...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_2999.jpg&hash=b1b4fc03d370ac966eb0f1f383329916104636da)

Here's the pic of the whole of top fuselage... You might notice there're a couple of spots where I applied putty. They were remains of molding tool that I cut, sanded off, then puttied.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3000.jpg&hash=32ae83298e1f2dd9e566bffe7c255d720d746121)

I also installed the domed nut for the tripod mount using epoxy glue. I'm gonna reinforce the epoxy with Milliput later, once the glue had hardened enough.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3001.jpg&hash=8466ba903a73349e327bb748471d5c7db3fe9a1a)

....And closed off all the gear bays....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3002.jpg&hash=cdf9f6d0523aadc0765e3371cd8a6dc016d59c4d)

Some update.... Joined the top and bottom fuselage halves. As expected, saw lots of seam lines to fill...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3005.jpg&hash=fb7cef96061db55d3f35c51651838797153f00b9)

Right wing... not too bad... BTW... the gap on the leading edge is meant to be there, according to the pics of real Berkut I found on Airliners.net.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3006.jpg&hash=94ed036d049c616381443ffb241fcfcc2f055725)

Left wing... Hmmm... that step will be a bit challenging. Will have to lay down a few layers of putty there, I reckon. Does anyone know of a better/easier way?
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3007.jpg&hash=214116e38f3a167ad54fe4a6651dbfe1a211d94f)

Wing root needs a bit of filling, but no major drama there. The seam lines running along the side of the engine intake there shouldn't be too bad. Most of that area will be covered by the canards. Still, just to be on the safe side, I'll apply a bit of putty there.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3008.jpg&hash=5d4251fcc4b5f589f77e10e13c7d4e1b2d5d38fc)

Nose section.... Again, not too bad. Fully expect to get this anyway...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3009.jpg&hash=c5f32dfeb6bfef77c14b347fee31e62522620059)

looks promising, i also like the camouflage you choose, it's a lot better than the, "all black" used on the real aircraft.

Boy oh boy.... This kit does not really have that many parts to make up the main fuselage. But... DANG! What little there are either did not really fit that well, or needed a lot of work to fix!   :banghead: One of the worst parts was the jet intake! I had to use quite a bit of putty to fill the gap between the intakes and the fuselage.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3019.jpg&hash=94d33fffd422eb86d438bafbdb17ae4760f9a6cb)

I actually wasn't planning to use pre-shading, but... after spraying the black around the cockpit, I had some left over in the airbrush cup, so decided to pre-shade some parts of the aircraft....
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3018.jpg&hash=583adfcf9a67cb0add308f1df30206e549abd388)

I also had a temporary lapse of judgement by spraying the turbine with Mr Metal Color aluminum. I should've used flat white instead.... After all the "weathering" effects are applied, can't really see the aluminum underneath. Oh well...
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3021.jpg&hash=8c0bccdd87141ad4fa4454151f02782017139c07)

Tried something different for the exhausts.... Sprayed the "lower" half with Tamiya Gun Metal, then sprayed the other half with left-over paint that I concocted a year ago (I think it was Mr Metal Color Aluminum and Dark Iron @ 50:50). Then, I "weathered" 'em with pretty much all of the Tamiya Clear paints that I have (clear blue, clear orange, clear red, and smoke). Sprayed a tad too much clear blue on one of the areas... oh well... I still like the effect.... :P

OK... here's where it's at.... Installed canopy, masked canopy, installed vert stabs, elevators, and sprayed a thin layer of base coat on top and bottom fuselage.

Based on reference photos that I got of a Flanker in the camo I want to use, the grey base coat for top and bottom fuselage has different shade. The top one looks a bit like FS35237, while the bottom one looks like Light Gull Gray.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2Fsu-35bm.jpg&hash=f49bceb45cac88f82509f2ccce73dd71f01c00e1)

So, what I've done is I've sprayed the bottom fuselage with Light Gull Gray (Gunze Aqueous Hobby H51). For the top fuselage, rather than using FS35237, I mixed up my own shade of grey using FS36231 (Gunze Aqueous Hobby H317) and Tamiya Flat White.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3030.jpg&hash=7ae289db9c35bdb29d7ada64d0b37b44e16f7ce5)
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi742.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx69%2Fmchoo2005%2FHobbyBoss%2Fberkut%2FIMG_3029.jpg&hash=339e14b83c6da71a990dc1452ce71702026ca917)

It's barely visible on the pics, but there are a couple of areas that I'd need to sand using 1200 grit sandpaper and re-spray.

Thanks for looking!

Apologies for the lack of update. I've been chipping away at this, but never bothered to take pics till now.

Have had some dramas with overspraying, so spent quite a lot of time touching up the paint here, there and everywhere. I should've left the vert stabs off before painting.  :banghead:

The black looking patterns are actually very dark grayish blue, which is Gunze's H322 (Phthalocyanine Blue) mixed with LifeColor Schwartz Grau (or Panzergrau?) at 50:50.

Hahaha... yes, I know. I was thinking about that before, but decided against it, 'cuz I'm a bit sick of the US colour scheme, since it's mostly gray.

Finally finished this little project, after many many dramas!  :banghead:

Here are the pics of the completed product. Not exactly the best work I've done thus far, but not the worst either. I kinda lost quite a bit of my motivation and patience sort of mid-way through...

By the way, the pilot looks very comical! He looks like a freakin' 15-year old kid dressed up in flight suit! Whoever did the mold for the pilot must've been a bit  :drink:

So I see that Hobbyboss purchased the molds from Zvesda, interesting.
It does look very good in that camo scheme.
Now that I know the Berkut is available again, I wonder what it would look like in Cuban Revolutionary Air Force camouflage and markings...
