Well 2 weeks away so time for a general reminder and head count for those going and those thinking of going.
SMW or Scale Model World is the primary UK model show run by the IPMS(UK).
Quite a few of the forum members will be attending and some will be displaying models as part of their local model club or Special Interest Group.
There of course will be the What-If SIG stand where many of our members shall be gathering, but we also have other SIG groups that we are actively involved with including:-
Project Cancelled - TSRJOE
Cold War - Falcon
South African - Roger the Cabin Boy
Soviet Air Force - McGrieg
Please feel free to pop by and say hello and introduce yourselves in between browsing the model displays and increasing the stash ;D
Cheers
Geoff B (I shall be mainly on the Project Cancelled & Cold War stands)
I think I can make it.
I have just become unemployed, so that weekend is now free for me. I might attend, provided my budget will stretch to cover travel arrangements etc. Which day is better? I probably wouldn't be able to do both.
Saturday
Its the longer day, busier but more stuff available
should be there myself, not shure what ill be after... but will swing past the stand with a freindly "hello " again
Well I'm thee Friday to Monday ;D
I'll be there for the weekend.
What's the situation on the M1 like now? Last time (2007?) I had a 6-hour journey from London to Telford due to endless roadworks. Would I be better off taking the M40?

I tend to use the A5, that runs along side the M1 for a while then swings left(west) at Hinkley. Past Tamworth and Litchfield, then links up with the M6 on the other side of brum. Then its a short run to the M54 and onwards to Telford.
As for works on the M1. Theres a lot going on around Junction 13 (Bedford) other wise im not aware of any thing else past that towards the M6. Im not sure whats happening works wise on the M6 thou
See you all early Saturday for the two days.
JimB
I'll be arriving Friday afternoon/evening depending how long I stay at Middle Wallop, and leaving the sunday evening. ;) ;D
Dear people, I'll be there mostly behind the Biggles SIG stand, apart from a general wandering aimlessy with a glazed look in my eyes. Both days. I can hear the sighs of relief when I say I'll probably be looking like....
All three days from the Friday.
likewise too via Cosford on the way down

If you come down the A-5 watch out for the speed cameras - there seems to be a lot of them on that road.
I'll be down on the Sunday probably.
I know about the Gatsos along the A5. Its a road I use a fair bit
Myself and my driver will be attending the Sunday or so my driver tells me. Early o clock has already been mentioned
I have a white fiver left over from the "Nationals" at Stoneliegh thats burning a hole in my pocket so Im already getting excited.
Quote from: Overkiller on October 31, 2010, 10:52:00 AM
Nevermind your white fiver, what about Ian's infamous "Framed white fiver"....?

We should book him in to have it surgically removed. lol

Your driver will also be there on Friday afternoon..... setting-up with Chris, and if required with Gary Wenko over on the Japanese Aircraft SIG.
Martin, Remember to post that car-park pass on to me when you get a chance
See y'all on Sunday - I'll be easy to spot, I'll be the only one accompanied by a 6' 3" pensioner that's cluthching a white fiver and refusing to buy anything that costs more than
half-a-crown !
Ian
It will be in the post tomorrow morning Ian
I'll be there saturday-when I will bring my P-40Q. Sunday I will be at the classic car show at the NEC.
Van
Hey Van
The NEC Classic Car show, Niiiice - Photo's of 60's 'Muscle' would be welcome, especially any MOPAR's..... Brummm
Ian
I'll be at Telford for both main days, and maybe late on Friday too, depending how long I stay at the International Model Boat Show nr Leamington. Some of the time I'll be on the Airliner SIG/Cardiff Plastic Aeroplane Club stand as well.
I do wish these exhbition organisers would read each others calenders ad not assume that theirs is the ONLY hobby their customers may have. I'd forgotten it was the Classic Car Show at the NEC the same weekend too. :banghead:
ooops, there Fiday afternoon too, for Biggles, etc..
Now then....started a Marauder tonight for Biggles. It's a personal Transport version, RAF of course!
Saturday all day (from early on), and Sunday in the afternoon. Looking forward to it, especially as I couldn't make it last year.
;D ;D
I'm only going to be able to make it for the Saturday only this year I'm afraid.
Should be there on the Saturday myself.
both days.
and on several stands [USAF, What-If?, Coventry & Warwickshire and Special Schemes..... ]
I shall be there from Friday afternoon until Sunday night, spending most time with the What-If SIG. I think I might drop in on the Boulton Paul Collection near Codsall on Friday afternoon, maybe hitting Cosford if time allows.
Way back in January I arranged rooms for 6 of us at the Park Inn at a very cheap rate ;D. Could those folk please remind me who they are and if they have the booking emails I forwarded to them?
I'd also like to know who I'm sharing a room with too!
be there both days may have a run up to cosford on Saturday afternoon, staying at holiday inn
Yeap thats the list of us Nick, but not sure if still have email or not (had to switch HDD earlier in year).
I think you'll be sharing with Duncan, as i suspect Chris might object to you sharing with Mrs Falcon ;)
I will bring copies of the booking emails with me to make sure we can all get in!
Actually, think I might call the hotel today and double check the bookings just to be safe.
They had better be :o
As im running out of space to hide the bodies. :banghead:
tongue firmly in cheek
Martin,
Would you like those who are planning to be there to give you an idea in advance of what they'll probably be bringing for the display (other than the Pegasus GB items) so you could get an dea of what the SIG display will look like?
Dave
surprise me Dave :) but bare in mind the 2 model limit out side of the pegasus build. You could alway rotate what you bring if you want to bring more than two thou
Two thou???? The limits gone up a tad, looks like we've got the whole of Hall 2!!! ;D ;D ;D

Got it down to the Pegasus GB pair (assuming the D.XXIII is done in time) plus 6 :banghead:. Ah, what the hell, I'll bring them and see what happens!
;D ;D
can't make it this year, as much as I would have liked to. Bike is off the road SORN'd for the foreseeable future, and the grouppenfuhrer, won't let me have the car for a whole day :banghead:. And no, I can't take her, as I would want to stay more than half an hour

i have bought a tub of twiglets for the stand OGL.
I've got the Wine. ;) :drink:
I'll be almost exclusively on the Biggles stand, but hope to drop by at sometime. I'll bring ....don't know, yet.
Not sure what'll fit in the car what with the Stafford and Biggles stuff, plus wife. But I'll try to bring something.
Every year I swear there will be no repeat of the previous years last minute rush and what happens ? I still have a last minute rush :banghead:
Still have to varnish my 2 models but they will get done tommorow. I can say that the rush this year was caused by reasons completely out of my control
Still nearly there

I understand your frustration Brother Narses, I used to be like that too. Not any more. Finished my last Nationals build, a T-33 for Gary Wenko's Japanese Aircraft SIG stand with five days to spare. Everything of mine is boxed, labelled and ready to go. All I have to do is fill the car with a 6'3" pensioner (and his precious white fiver), my mate Steve from work and some petrol.....

If I am lucky enough to win a decent amount on the lottery on Wednesday then I will be there..... otherwise I will miss the event, I had a wonderful time last year and so wanted to go again this year..... saving up already for next year though :D

To finish.......
DC-3 of Czech Airlines....spraying tomorrow. Just superglued the u/c.
Martin Marauder VIP....spraying tomorrow after glueing on hatches/doors (same on DC-3, made from paper)
P-39Q...spraying tomorrow.
Painting tomorrow...1/32nd WW1 Car and 1/72nd WW1 tank in German colours.
Target for everything done, including 11 base-texts is Wednesday evening. No worries.
They'll be on the Biggles stand.
Oh....I'm out all Wednesday morning....the "Call of the Floozies!"

It certainly would be Chris, as the reason I am getting rid of yet more kits is so I can get back on the road. Letting the Gruppenfuhrer anywhere near any sort of retail outlet would mean me selling my kidneys on the black market...again!! :banghead:
Chris very very  for missing out on this weekend
I have decided I will be going on Saturday, and I was wondering, can I bring models to display, or do I have to be a member of the IMPS or something first?
We've never needed to be a member of a Motorcycle Display Team before to bring models for the table. ;D
i can be a liitle more defibative now.
should be there Sat, ive managed to talk my father in law into coming, he wiffs 004 railways so he may apreciate a look.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with that comment...especially as OGL is giving me a lift from Wellingborough ;D
Despite all the planning it's still f****** hectic!!
Got a bit more to do, things to sort, and IPMS Stafford tonight.
Perhaps I need to prioritise more...hell, no!! I am what I am!
See you Friday/Saturday/Sunday and say "Hi" to Biggles ;D
So far filled 5 large plastic boxes with probably 2 more to go.
Plus bags of bases, books, modelling kit etc....
Stuff it . Trying to get the painting done on my HobbyBoss Wildcat and the paint just peeled off right down to the plastic. It's only Tamiya tape and the undercoat has been dry for 3 days. :banghead:
The Typhoon has a little of the same problem but I might get away with it.....
Need to buy some ModelStrip at Telford so I can sort these kits out. A better brand of primer might help too.
Stripper? Fairy Powerspray
Primer? Halfords plastic primer. Range of colours for it too.
Wines packed (5 bottles in all) as well as the Stottie cakes and Pease pudding, all ready for my trip south tomorrow spreading the Northern gospel. ;) ;D
sounds like a well laid plan there Steve. Wot you doing being a member of this rabble?
Pyro. Feel free to join the mayhem. So long as your not bringing a 48th scale B 52. As Kit has already said. IPMS membership realy only gets you in free and before 10am.
The rules regarding sig membership do say that you should realy be an IPMS member to join. But along with most SIG leaders I sort of forget about that bit.
Have much fun chaps. As always, wish I could be there, but there's a good chance of a Scooter sighting in '11. Party on! :drink:

Well I'm still waiting with bated breath to find out if I'm going to be sacked in three days, three weeks or three months (or three minutes, I suppose.....), so given the financial uncertainty, I'm afraid I won't be there. One year......
Have fun folks!
OK babies....ready to rock and roll!!
Sadly, no contribution for the stand as I've 8 large boxes of stuff for Stafford/Biggles, plus other stuff to survive the weekend.
But it'll be fun.
Leaving at 1pm so should be there around 2pm after buying fuel.
The stand is in the middle of being put togeather. Chris and Ian are sortting it all out. so I can sit n the lap top and type this little missive.

Geoff, Chris and Duncan are currently on door duty. Im sitting on the stand looking as if im working on this laptop.
...and I've just had my breakfast and I'll be over there soon. Keep the coffee warm please. ;D
Was coming until about 20 mins ago when my transport plans fell apart........not going to make itnow
opps sorry to hear that.
well the gang has grown. loads of money spent, lots of ideas swapped. some whine and single molt consumed
came over with my father in law today, said hi to the gang at the table and Radish opposite. Didnt spend as much as the last couple of years, but got the top of the list item ( Freight dog EAP) and i think it was the last on the table. My dad in law got a couple of 1:76 trucks for his railway layout ( also a wif, " the Wye, Bodda and dunnow Narrow gage) and soaked up the ambiance. He was impressed by the gangs tables and he liked the classic british airliners table as well.
a well spent afternoon.
0.930 hrs sunday
the gang are slowly arriving from their various hotels. A few bleary eyes are to be seen.
The halls will fall silent at 11am for remembrance Sunday.
it feels a bit slower than yesterday, but im sure the traders will do ok.
All
Have a good one, maybe join you all next year? said that before.

Strip mining continues. The halls are busy, but not as busy as yesterday. The lads are having a good show
Saurday was also a damm good day as well.
Home and I feel proper ducked!
A great weekend!!
According to my info, the show numbers were "up", IPMS membership is "up" and the Comp numbers broke the 1000 barrier, so "up" there.
I shall sleep for a while before starting next year's builds (and finishing a few of this year's too!)

;D ;D
I've been going to 'The Nationals' since it was held in Maples Store in London, in the mid-60s or so, and this one was THE best ever. ;D
No outstanding reason, just lots of quality models, good traders, huge variety and good friends too. Thanks to all of you guys who helped make it a good one for me.
Busy day, good company. :drink:Great seeing you all again.
Thought the display was the best we have had so far, very nice builds .

Great day on saturday-i walked around so much I neglected to sit at the sig display table-still it was good to chat to a few people.
I also bought too much...
It was a great display for the SIG. The way we ran it worked well.

Really wish i'd been able to pop down to Shropshire. Anyway, hope to see some of the guys in 'uddersfield.
One funny thing was Nicks shirt as seen in the photo, when we met him on door duty i said nice entry for the 'garish shirt competition' some exhibitors were running for the most loudest and eye catching shirt - Nick's reply "What Competition ?" ------ ;D
The note said "£50 or the chicken gets it!"....
But I negotiated with the kidnappers, explaining how the chicken had attended SMW regularly, many times, and had directed many people to the correct entrance, squeaking away merrily.
The kidnappers were impressed with this appeal and released the chicken after a few squeaks.
No money changed hands.

You obviously haven't read Lee (Wooksta)'s post in the Stash thread then...... be afraid...very afraid! Or Martin H's.....
By my standards, I was very restrained this year, only one impulse purchase, everything else was a planned purchase.
Duncan
Believe it or not, but quite a lot of mine were planned purchases - the deals with other members, the Hornet book and the Admiral Spits were planned. The rest was impulse admittedly, but most should be assembled fairly soon, especially the Hornets.

That was something to do with Ian Hartup, something about trying to get as many members in a hawaiian shirt for charity raising. A mate of mine who always attends the Nats in a Hawaiian shirt was verbally abused by some cockney tosser because of his shirt.

Just got home. Great time had, good to see you all again. Probably the best display we've put on in my time. No idea how it happened ;D
Duncan sorry we didn't get time to look at the Gloster plans. Perhaps at Hudders ?
As for the chicken/duck being returned it was nothing to do with an appeal to
my the kidnappers good nature more the fact that Terry was near to tears ;D
Roll on 2011 - the swimming pool might even be finished by then

Next year the chicken will have "Security"....
If the "Security" are intended to deflect the attentions of people of evil intent, then a re-think may be in order. However, if the intention is to distract them, then you might be on to something...... ;)
Had a good weekend as well. Very nice to meet everyone again, some new faces as well.
Another hall to be added next year??? Good news on one hand as we'll have more table space, but it's a rather overwhelming event as it is.
The plan is that the show will stay in the usual three halls apart from 2013 for the IPMS 50th. Then the fourth hall will be used for one year only.
I had a pretty good time on Saturday, though the nine hours of driving wiped me out somewhat. I did intend to come and say hello, but I'm rather shy, and when I wandered past there was a rather large group of people at the stand. I intended to swing by again later on, but got caught up in the retail madness (spent bloody ages trying to find a Skyraider!) and then it was closing time.

Yeap you should really try and break the ice and say 'hello' as vitually all that row was forum members from Mcgrieg on the Soviet Airforces to Me on Project Cancelled and Radish was within squeaking distance across from us !. All you need do is say hello, introduce your self and you'll soonfind a welocme introduction to the crew, and they might well have pointed you in the right direction of a SPAD if one was to be found.
Geoff
the big guy from Bolton speaks the truth.

I better make sure I finish one or two kits as well as make sure I have monies for that trip

Is 2013 when Chris Edwards has his Centennary? ;D ;D
Rest assured, I shall always dress respectably and act normally at Telford :o
Looking forward to 2011 already.....lots of crazy Fokkers to build for Biggles and for Stafford's "French" theme I have an all-pink REAL Mirage IIIC to build.
But first, I MUST finish my V-tail Hellcat that's been overtaken by events. Already "primed", it'll be in French North African colours.

We are a reasonable bunch ;D. I remember the wellcome I got when I first introduced myself (still got the scars). I now count some of the lads as very good friends indeed. Just pop along and say hello

Both of the above.......... ;D
As we spent almost two whole days walking around on a solid concrete floor it would be tiring, wouldn't it? As my Nanna used to say 'It draws your feet dear', whatever that might mean. ;D
Today Mrs PR19 said she'd just let me sleep as I looked so tired and I woke up at 0915!
............................bit like a bread poltice..............Ill get me coat.
I only did the one day and I was knackered, lucky my career came.
Friday didn't really "effect" me, as I arrived at 2.15pm and was gone by 2.45pm, having delivered what was intended, put up the cloth, etc..
Saturday, a full day of wandering, a light repast (ie full Turkey Christmas Dinner at the local carvery....£4, and a good chat to Quarter Scale Group in the pub...in bed by midnight).
Sunday, another full day, up at 6am and busy thereafter, home by 6pm, a light repast, then a post Telford snooze from about 8pm onwards, a coffee at 9.30pm and bed by 10.30pm. I slept until 8.45am when sproglette Lauren said "Goodbye Grandad" off to school.
Last night (Monday) a heavy headbanging at Motorhead in Derby!!
Too old!! Sod that!!!
Late on parade..again :o!!...had a great time except for some of my few purchases going walkies at the end of the show, ('tidied' away rather than 'had away' me thinks!!), but overall had a ball even if my feet thought the rest of me had run a full marathon!.The tables looked great and had a LOT of interest which is great news and everyone was on top form. As Martin said it was nice to meet up with the usual mob and some folks for the first time, Chris(Gibson), Damianb, Deano amongst them..(even better to get a bit of commission work from Andreas on the upcoming Chinese fighter prototypes book that he and Tony Buttler are working on)........... Great to meet up with you all again,
Andy...
Just got home from my 1500+ km drive; after SMW I visited Cosford, the Jaguar/Daimler heritage collection in Coventry, and Bletchley Park (this time I got a tour of their National Computer Museum, which I hadn't seen before).
A quick inspection reveals NO damage to the ~16 models I brought along, despite a stormy Channel crossing, and loads of rumble strips, potholes and sleeping policemen. I've done trips like these a couple of times now, but that I can bring such fragile stuff along without breakage still amazes me.
