Title: The Graf Spee "Canoe"
Post by: sequoiaranger on April 06, 2010, 03:20:50 PM
Some ex-naval guy with WAAAY too much time on his hands came up with this "canoe" that two people can ride in. It is about 1/20th scale:

The "Captain"s seat!

And some detail:

Holy crap!  I am both awestruck and disbelieving.  I thought I knew the limits of human nuttery.

Pardon me, I meant "skill and craftsmanship".

One of my all time favorite insane builds.   Is it bad I wanna build a 1/20 CSGN in much the same way?

Funny you should mention that, that's exactly what happens at Peasholm Park in Scarborough.  Like this guy, the 'ships' are manned & there's a full naval battle on the park pond, it's been going since the 1920's.  I last saw it when I was I kid, I've tried to catch it since but I always seem to miss the dates.

They used to recreate the Battle of the River Plate, the ships recreated include the Ajax, Achilles & Exeter.  I think that's what I saw when I was younger, now there's no real emphasis on a particular battle, just ally & enemy & I think there's a mix of ships from different eras.

Scroll down in this link & you'll see how the ships are manned, the guys look through a view port in the super structure.

There's a guy shows up the bi-annual Model Boat regatta at Childe Beal Park, nr Pangbourne, who has a Victorian era RN Battleship, a German WWII style battleship and a Conquerer style nuke sub, all of which are 'ride aboard' types. No, the sub doesn't submerge, as far as I've noticed anyway.
