about a year ago, i finished building a 1/144 scale aircraft carrier, the BNS Dendermonde (see: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,20488.0.html ). this aircraft carrier took about 6 months to build.
also i build a smaller HMS Invincible like V/STOL Carrier, the Leutonian LNS Amanda Peet.
now, in the last build thread, i said that i had plans to build a 3rd aircraft carrier, this time a STOBAR carrier somewhere between the Kuznetsov-class and the Indian converted Gorshkov. well today i like to announce that the 3rd carrier WILL see the light of day . i have alraedy begun designing the layout, witch i will hope will end up looking like the one proposed for India's Indigenuos aircraft carrier.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.globalsecurity.org%2Fmilitary%2Fworld%2Findia%2Fimages%2Fads-pic2.jpg&hash=5b19aa090656180cfef1c04ab3329e20a79fc78e)
as for the airwing, im planning on a pair of SU-33 Flankers (Dragon SU-35/37 twinpack, easely to convert into SU-33's, have 1 converted model in Soviet Navy markings) and a 3rd fighter of a type unknown, perhaps MIG-29K or if im lucky to get one, an SU-25 Frogfoot. as for helicopters i most propably be using either NH90's, SH-60's or SA330 Puma's. or if i happen to find a 1/144 scale Revell/italeri Mi-24, then i will use that. i dont have anymore details at the moment, but i already have the sheets of styrene ready and i hope to get a 1/72 snowberry kit to be used as a basis.
underneath is a picture of the materials (2 sheets 1.5mm thick for the hull extention, 5 sheets 1mm thick for the bottom layer of the flight deck, 5 sheets 0.5mm thick for the top layer of the flight deck, 2 sheets 0.75mm thick for the Island Superstructure and 2 0.75mm cutouts for the ski-jump)
if required, i have additional sheets ready in reserve.
estimated dimensions
length: 1600mm
beam (deck): 250mm
height: ?
where to put it: No Idea
nationality: Dont Know yet, maybe Ukrainian, Chinese or Iranian
Should be quite an interesting project to see done, Nils. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress.
This sounds interseting....any update on this build??.......Saw some photos on another site of a scratch built WW2 American carrier....think it was over 9 feet long n over 30 planes on it....app in a museum now
i dont have any updates on this project at the moment, the build is currently put on hold due to logistical, stash and financial problems. the only recent update i have is that i got a pair of 1.5mm thick styrene sheets for the hull extention, thats about it. as for the airwing, i decided to go with the Dragon 1/144 SU-35/37 twin pack and convert them into SU-33's, the parts are in the box and the only thing to scratch is the tailhook and maybe the folding wings.
i hope to get back on this project soon
What size is the Plastic card sheet your using Nils ?

What size is the Plastic card sheet your using Nils ?
they are all A4 size (like standard printer paper), but they will be cut into sized strips to fit between the connecting hulls, that is if i can get hold of a snowberry, lucky for me there is a toystore not to far from here who's having a sale on those kits ;D
UPDATE:
looks like i have enverything (except the airwing) on hand. the snowberry kit's here, so is the sheet styrene.
im gonna wait with building the island until i have a final design ready. as an extra, im donna see what i can do about fitting underdeck hangars ;D
im gonna look for inspiration to the Chinese aircraft carrier, the Shi-Lang (ex-soviet navy varyag, kuznetzov-class carrier), as the mistery arround the carrier has entrigued me . as recent pictures showed a new radar mast being fitted above the bridge, i might design the island in a similar way, by upgrading an exsisting design.
hope to have final design sketches made tonight and scanned in tomorrow
REVIVE :o
the carrier has made progress, with the bench mostly empty, i thought i should continue with this project.
the 2 halves of the hull have now been constructed and im about to start the hull extention.
im gonna start looking into the underdeck hangar shortly.
ive also given her a name, the LNS Hannigan .
the airwing on the model will be comprised of:
2 x SU-33K Flanker-D's
1 x MIG-29K Fulcrum
1 or 2 TA-6E Intruder (deck trainers)
1 x S-70 Seahawk
although i am leaning on replacing the mig-29 with an SU-47K Berkut-D.
first pictures of the carrier under construction

Good to see that you managed to get a bow and a stern this time :)
SUPER BUMP :banghead:
after 6 months, i finally got back on building the project.
rough work on the hull has now been completed, and the underdeck hangar is big enough to house 4 1/144 Mig-29K's or 3 SU-33's
the first layer of the flightdeck is also being drawed up, undergoing pre-construction, although its gonna be tricky to carrier-ize the snowberry hull with the deck, but i will look into that later.
i still (after over a year) havent determined the final design for the island superstructure, i would like to go for something similar like what the Chinese are building on the Shi-Lang (ex soviet "Varyag") but its going to be very difficult to scrachbuild.
already confirmed to be based on it are:
-1 SH-60AEW Seahawk (or some sort of fixed wing STOBAR AEW platform)
-1 SH-60F Seahawk
-2 SU-33K Sea Flankers
-1 MIG-29K Fulcrum (planning on replacing it with either SU-25K2 or SU-47K)
better pics soon...
yes, there is progress once again,
the hangar is done, and the top deck has been permanently fitted. also notable is the ski-jump (although its seems a bit big :-\)
work is almost completed on the 2 Leutonian SU-33K's, witch will for the backbone of the airwing. the aircraft will be modified to use western weaponry, AMRAAM or Meteor BVR's, AIM-9 Sidewinders, LGB's, Litening pod,...
the aircraft now have a 2-tone grey camo, similar to the US Navy's F-18's, but im gonna add dark grey camo patches.
here are a few pics, i placed a MIG-29K and a Russian SU-33 on the deck scale comparison and deck testing
My wife would bury my body in such a way that it would never be found.
So I'm glad you're making this, because it's AWESOME!!!
Holy revival time.
seeing the carrier gathering dust after almost 2 years on/off construction, i decided to change the design from a STOBAR carrier into a CATOBAR one. and instead of a Leutonian carrier, i thought of making it into a Royal Navy carrier.
and i got a new back history,
with 2 new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers (CVA-01) entering service to replace the 2 Audacious-class carriers (HMS Ark Royal and HMS Eagle), in 1976, the Royal Navy decided to also induct 2 lighter fleet carriers to replace the Centaur-class carriers. this class was know as the Kestrel-class carriers, composing of HMS Kestrel and HMS Vulture. the ships have a 50.000 ton displacement and have an airwing of 18 aircraft and 6 helicopters.
HMS Kestrel was the first to enter service in 1982, followed by the Vulture in 1984.
model:
the cancelled STOBAR carrier will be converted to CVF configuration, im gonna start by removing the ski-jump and making it a flush-deck carrier.
as for the island superstructure, im gonna look at a combination of CVA-01 and the invincible-class islands.
air group at the moment, im thinking of:
-2 Sea Tornado GR.1's (800 and 892 NAS)
-1 Sea Tornado F.2 (899 NAS)
-possibly 1 Hawkeye AEW.2 (E-2C, 849 NAS).
-Puma HC.1 (845 NAS, transferred from RAF stocks)
-Intruder KS.1 (Tanker/ASW converted A-6E, 814 NAS)
EDIT: pic uploaded after skijump removal, PSR still needed

i know, but since i dont have paypal (and not intending to get one just for 1 purchase) im gonna have to make due, i might check the airshow circuit at modeling stands if they are selling any, or i could check aviation megastore , to bad they dont make injection kits of the Merlin. i wish revell would re-release its 1/144 NH90, i think it would good in FAA markings :)
anyway, im thinking of changing the Sea Tornado F.2 for an F-14 Tomcat, witch be more plausible and more affordable for the FAA.
very very good !!! I like :o :o :o more pics please!!!!

<...> to bad they dont make injection kits of the Merlin. <...>
But they do! Well, sort of. F-Toys has a rather decent 1/144 Merlin as a pre-painted kit that you only need to attach a couple of parts to. They only cost a couple quid shipped from Hong Kong. So don't wait up, get that PayPal account! ;D
They're the Japanese kind of Merlins, so I reckon some conversion might be involved to get sub-hunters. HERE (http://kampfgruppe144.blogspot.com/2010/02/1144-heliborne-vol4-f-toys-update2.html) are a couple of pics on Kampfgruppe 144.
Hear ya on the NH90! Also wish Revell would re-release these.
i got a few more pictures,
first off, a presentation of the planned airwing, 2 Sea Tornado FGR.1's, 1 Sea-Tornado F.2 (navalised F.3) and 1 Intruder K.1 (A-6E Tanker)

here are some larger shots of the hangar, i have been having some some problems with some of the sheets on the sponsoon curling and bending, i might have to harden it up by sprying isolation foam underneath :-\

If you still have access to those panels that are starting to bend, maybe you can add some braces (styrene strips perpendicular to the sheet)?
Hi Nils, great project you've got more guts than me building something this size! I've got one of the F-Toys Merlins that Moritz mentioned (Japanese Antarctic colours) and they are pretty good little models. They go together really quick and all you have to do is add the tail fin/tail rotor, rotor blades and undercarriage and a couple of decals, takes about five minutes and you're done! Really wish they'd release them as proper kits. Thinking of getting the RAF version too.
Good luck for the rest of the build!
Paul Harrison
i did wat Hobbes advised and removed the plates from the sponsoons, imgonna try to beef them up a bit, this time with thicker sheets.
before starting on the airwing, im gonna finish some other projects first, just to shorten the "to-do" pile.

Nils.....do you need any alternate a/c for your air wing as you mentioned in previous threads.....?
with regards to aircraft, ive got that pretty much covered, thanks
anyway, i have a small update,
since the carrier is taking to long and has been collecting dust for quite some time, i decided to move the build to Priority 1, witch means all current projects are put on hold or postponed until the carrier is finished
i have some pictures of the works ;D
3 sponsoons have been replated and enforced with thicker plate (1.0mm instead of 0.5mm) and i have started work on the sides of the ship, straight long strips of 320mm long and 25mm wide, they will be going all arround the carrier to enforce the flight deck.
aditional sponsoons with the OLS, self defence systems (phalanx, Sea dart,...) and catwalks will be added once the work is completed
in terms of aircraft, i have decided on what modifications to ad to the Sea Tornado's and i have also started work on decal designing.
Deck markings will be painted on, some of the markings (deck codes, elevator lines,...) will be made in decal form (after rough design is made on paper, the final design will be transfered to decalpaper).

ok, one more update for today.
the plating arround the deck is now done, now comes the horrid long task of PSRing the huge gaps
this is not (yet) modeled or in the stash, but decaldesign is currently underway.
to provide the carrier with an early warning platform, i thought i would get a revell 1/144 E-2C Hawkeye.
it will be painted up as a Hawkeye AEW.1 in 849 Squadron markings, the K on the tail indicates its an aircraft operating from HMS Kestrel.
here's a profile of what i got in mind

Thats the spirit.......!!!!
Great looking colour scheme.......
i managed to get a full scale design for the island done on paper last night, im gonna have a try at refining it and maybe ad some minor changes.
furthermore, there is going to be a change in the airwing.
i am concidering to dump the Intruder K.1 tanker. instead, im going to replace it with a French Navy Alpha Jet-M (Navalised Ajet), figured the Fleet Air Arm might make some sort of agreement with the Aeronavale on terms of joint carrier pilot training.
furthermore, the following idea came to me in a dream, as part of the airwing, i was thining of adding a westland build version of the CH-53, the Sea Stallion HC.4 (in dark green/white camoflage like the Comando Seaking HC.4's)
here's a quick profile of the Sea Tornado F.2 in 899 squadron markings, this will be used for the carriers air defence.

ok, update for today, yesterday the covering arround the hull was done,
today was the start of the most annoying part of the build, the PSR work, and this thing has Gapps with a capital G :-\
first thing i did was scratch a catapult runout at the front of the deck, using some leftovers from the cutting work.
still lots more PSR to go, after that, its time to make the smaller sponsoons for the OLS and seft defence systems.
island work hasnt started yet, thats gonna be for later.
if your wondering about the length, whe's over 120cm long (about 4 feet) and 28cm wide (about 1 foot)
there will be no update tomorrow, as im going a Wings & Wheels event in Ursel (maybe even find some cheap stash additions).
im gonna leave you with these pictures of tonight.

Really starting to take shape now! Get the champagne ready, for she's almost ready to launch. :drink: Tower can be added when she's in the water.
Does it float though? ;)
update for today,
i was planning on going to a Wings & Wheels event today, but i had to cancel that trip deu to the bad weather :(
the weather did permit to continue with some of the work on the carrier, although mostly concept artwork and general designing.
went shopping this afternoon to see if i could find a 1/144 Hawkeye, but unfortunatly i didnt find one, guess im gonna have to order it online :-\
here i have 2 possible additions to the airwing, first up, a French Aeronavale Alpha Jet-M, a carrier varriant of the Alpha Jet, used to train French Navy and Fleet Air Arm pilots for carrier operations, i got 1 revell kit in the stash so i got that pretty much covered.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi307.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn292%2FNilssteyaert%2Fwhat%2520if%2FHMS%2520Kestrel%2FAlphaJet-M.png&hash=054cbe63dd69ac5b51bd6fde0988f48791975ecf)
and here's a concept ive been working on for a while now, i got a 1/144 Revell HH-53 in stash but its missing its front clear parts, so im gonna fit a Chinook nose section on it
here's what i got planned for it, im planning either a Commando version or an ASW/SAR version.
here's a profile of the commando troop transport version, Sea Stallion HC.4 (depicted in green/white camo)

designing of the island superstructure is still in the works, it still needs lots of tailoring.
i was gonna show you some of the artwork im designing on paper, unfortunatly the guards caught me on spying on the works.
guess im gonna have to try and sneak in again tomorrow
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi307.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn292%2FNilssteyaert%2Fwhat%2520if%2FHMS%2520Kestrel%2F001-5.jpg&hash=2f07d2b6249f2de20f90fbaa5a275cc34cfc9937)
The guards....haha
Love the chinook/ stallion hybrid.....too cool !
ok, i finally got a design ready for the island
browsing google images for CVA01's design, i found a shipbucket profile (i think it was one of Tornado's or ALVAMA's) of CVA01.
i managed to modify it the available length and scaled it up to roughly 1/144, and came up with this.
printed it out, and placed it on a Lego railing, i think this could work

Looks the part!
last update for today <_<
i have started rough deck testing and basic assembly of the island, the main radar behind the controlroom will be made from the cap of an old inhaler (HOG may be gone, but his inspiration lives on), added some lego parts to simulate the hight of the tower.
i placed a scrapped old E-2 on the side-deck elevator, a Khemedi CE-2C at the main catapult, and a tornado on the stern catapult.
main layout i highlighted with a pencil, it will be eraced before going to the spraybooth in the sched

of course im going to add them, no point in leaving the ship unprotected ;D
i think i can scratch a few launchers
With the aircraft on the deck the ship looks a little small to me, but then I am not into ships and such so would not know if it is actually a small aircraft carrier or not.
Gondor
im not much into ships either, thats why the project has been stalling for the past (almost) 1.5 years, but i always liked aircraft carriers and they make an excellent display for naval and "navalised" aircraft. to build a full 1/144 scale aircraft carrier, i would need a whole lot more room, and thats something i dont have, she's roughly the same length as Lindberg's 1/180 Graf Zeppelin carrier (if they ever are going to release it :-\).
a full nimitz-class carrier in 1/144 would be about 2.5 meters long (rough estimate), there's no way i have room for that.
im just going to build the length i see fit, and 1.20 meters is long enough for me (and the shelves)
work on the carrier this week will be at a slower pace, as my 3-week holiday is over and im back at work, tonight im gonna see if can get some work done on some of the ilands parts. ive been making drawings and plans for the parts on paper, the top tower of the island is boing to be quite complicated to build (kinda diamond shaped) but i think i can pull it of, as for defences, i made a rough sketch last night and im thinking of 4 or 5 Phalanx guns and 3 or 4 SeaDart launchers (missiles are easely converted from 1/144 AGM-65 Mavericks and sprue pieces)
update picture for today,
i have started with the clear parts of the island, first up, first floor, the parts will be painted once construction is complete.
next to the structure, you can see the plate for the second layer, the carriers control tower
inside has been painted black, it will bring out the windows better then the previous carriers.

To save some work how about a vertical launch missile system? All you'd need is piece of plasticard with either a grid cut into it or small squares of plasticard for the launch covers. Means using up some deck space though, unles you fit them to the island somewhere?

Evergreen already has some pre-etched sheets with squares, if you go with a VLS. I have picked up a sheet of 1/4" and 1/3" for other projects. But it is your project, so I say do what ever your sanity can handle. I know if I tried to tackle something like this, it would take me ten years to get half as far as you have, if not torpedo-ing the project with some massive amounts of fireworks! But I salute you and I eagerly look forward to the updates! All my work in in 1/144th scale and I have wondered about doing an aircraft carrier in this scale.
Fujimi do the Lynx in 1/144 BTW :-

i got an update, havent been able to post any due to lack of time (back at work).
tuesday, i started on the top tower, this was finished yesterday

got a small update,
i havent done any work on the carrier for 3 days now, thought i would do a few side projects t'ill i can figure out what additional details to give the island.
regards to the carrier, the airwing delivery is complete, just got a E-2 Hawkeye and i managed to find a Puma HC.1 in 1/144.
im still waiting for confirmation for my other E-2 on order (as a backup, might build it with the wings folded).
im gonna post update pictures as soon as i can make some progress...
i have started to work on some of the carrier's self defence systems. i have started by midifying a few Mavericks from the spares box, fins have been cut and im looking for some leftover spreu for the rocket boosters, should look like SeaDarts when they're done
as for CIWS Phalanx guns, im looking into that atm
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi307.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn292%2FNilssteyaert%2Fwhat%2520if%2FHMS%2520Kestrel%2F006-1.jpg&hash=25105d352a3b32696159175d97aa319a01e180ba)
its been quiet lately on the build of the carrier, mostly due to lack of time.
havent made any major progress yet, only some more research regarding deck layout and colors.
ive been thinking of changing the name of the carrier to something more "British".
possible names including HMS Dutchess of York, Indefiance, Courageous & Bravery.
the delivery of models for the airwing is complete, so is scavenging for navalisation parts for the Tonkas
now its time to start designing decals for the airwing and the carrier.
Suggestion for your build, I did a 1/144 carrier- a section of one, not full ship. For your radar antennas, if you will have any uncovered ones, get one of those little rotating display stands they have had now and again at hobby dealers. These have a 2" turntable or a 3" one and rotate about 1 rpm on a single AA battery which lasts about 3 years. I got the 2" turntable one, painted the whole affair gray, and put various antennas on it made of styrene stock or paper. The best was a modern type of "billboard" antenna, just one of those tilted square face things with a few slits and markings on it - scanned array. These little display turntables are like these used in stores for jewelry displays.
although i must say its a good idea, i dont have any intentions of putting anything electrical inside of the ship (thats more for RC builders IMHO).
ive got a small update, i have just printed out the decals for the ship and the airwing, and the name of the ship has also been changed.
ive decided that the new name for the ship should be "HMS Courageous", named after one the Royal Navy's first aircraft carriers.
building wise there has been little to no changes, but im koping to find the inspiration/motivation again to continue finishing this carrier
got a big picture update.
before pulling her into the drydock for more PSR and fitting of catwalks, railing and defensive systems,..... thought i would give you a bit of an eye opening picture, just to show you the huge size of this ship.
up to now, i can officially say its the biggest model ive ever built (and to now the most expensive).
here for size comparison, from bottom to top, the "HMS Courageous" allongside the retired ex-Leutonian carrier "LNS Amanda Peet" (currently in storage awaiting refit into a commando carrier and renaming), my earlier built Belgian Navy aircraft carrier "BNS Dendermonde" (also planned to undergo a refit).

i got another update for you all ;D
the work on the island has progresses, just finished adding some outdoor plumbing, fitting the first antanna domes,....
the rear mast is a dry fit, still a work in progress

also a just finished with one of the boardwalks, including a platform for the OLS
i really should get crackin on those SeaDarts and Phalanx guns :-\

another small update.
work on the ship is progressing well, if i can keep up the pace, it could be finished by yearend
anyway, i got a small update regarding the airwing.
the announced aircraft remain unchanged (Puma, Sea Tornado GR.1/F.2, Hawkeye AEW.1), but im looking into the possibility of adding 1 additional type, preferably a multirole close range fighter (to defend the inner circle of the battle group). types im thinking at the moment are the F/A-18A Hornet or an F-14A Tomcat.
development work on the navalisation of the Tonka has been completed, i got 3 Rafale-M's in the stash all destined to be converted to land-based Rafale-C's, im gonna use the naval parts (landing gear, tailhook,..) on the tornado's.
another change is that at the moment im thinking of swapping in the Dragon/DML Tornado GR4's for the more detailed (and accurate, newer) Revell version, as i got 2 recent revell kits (a GR1 and ECR) in the stash. as for the Navalised ADV version, i gonna have to stick with the Dragon/DML kit (as the revell and DML kits are the same mold).
one probles is that i misjudged my decal supply, although i have plenty of 1/72 WW2 RAF decals, i appear to be a bit short on 80's style roundels (low vis dark blue/red), reason im not using the stock roundels from the Dragon kits is that to me they look a bit small :-\
imgonna look at my stash and see if i cant get any decals from other kits, otherwide its no problem to make them myself
update:
work on the first part of the airwing has started , Sea Tornado F.1 of 899 NAS.
to be painted in 2-tone grey, lowvis roundels. expected back story should depict the aircrafts use during Operation: Desert Storm in 1991

How we said...It´s a Faraonical work.
update:
the first aircraft for the carrier is finished, a Sea Tornado F.1 in 899 NAS markings, as a fleet defence fighter.
also, i just got a large spraycan of grey paint for the carrier's hull, witch will be sprayed on after work on the carwalks and platforms are finished.
the aircraft: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,32017.msg536183.html#msg536183

the carrier has been lying derilict on the bench for months, gathering dust :-\
but im still planning on finishing it this year.
after reading the Air Forces Monthly article (see here (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,34696.msg550573.html#msg550573)), i got the inspiration to work on it again.
however, there is going to be a change in the airwing, the planned Puma HC.1 is now being replaced by an Anigrand 1/144 Merlin HC.3, obtained via a trade some time ago.
still have another E-2C kit in the stash, might convert it into a COD/tanker or ASW aircraft
here's a pair of pics of how the ship looks at the moment. once the catwalks are installed and taping is done (and the temperature is warmer in the sched), its time to spray her in the primer (witch i only do for large models).

Looking good Nils. I remember first seeing this one over on SSM or was it KG144, either way - lots of folks pulling for you to bring it done. Maybe we can even get a 144th bottle of Champagne for launching day.
Looks as if you may have a problem with the stern of your ship. The deck rises towards the stern which is not good for aircraft trying to land. the fact that the end of the deck is a flat surface where most British carriers have had a rounded end may not be particularly correct either.
Sorry if this means you have to do some rework.

BIG UPDATE
after 3 months of pretty much no activity, i have a big update regarding the ship.
i have finished work on the boardwalks and fitting of the prop shafts.
the island superstructure is also nearing completion, last night i finished fitting some more antenna's, im still thinking of ading some more detail, but im not sure what more to add yet :-\
anyhow, today is going to be a milestone in the build, namely the spraypainting of the hull and deck in primer
once this is done, it will be pretty much 85 percent finished.
locations for the OLS, self defence systems, tower and the opening for the underdeck hangar have now been taped off, ready to go to the sched for spraying.
this is also the scariest part of the project, the trip from the upstairs bench to downstairs, if anything goes wrong on the way, or during the spraying, its game over for what is now the most expensive build i ever made (cost has already exeded the 250 Euro mark, that includes the snowberry kit, plasticard sheets, gleu, putty, paint and airwing, catering not included)
before the big moment, here are some pics of the work done last night

update number 2
the ship has now been moved to the sched, where i have prepared a make-shift spraybooth with newspaper and washing pins.
one side of the ship has now been spayed, in about 15 to 20 minutes from now, im gonna turn it arround and spray the other side, then after that its the flightdeck itsself.
if all goes right, i could have it all done within the next 1 or 2 hours.
the full completion of the ship, including the airwing will take less then a month or so.
i happy that after two and a half years im finally reaching the finish line with this project
here's a pic from the shed, just after the first sprayjob

ok, final update for today
the ship has now been completely sprayed in grey primer, and paintwork on the island has started to,
the darker grey on the flightdeck has also been applied, the landing area will get a matt-black coating with white stripes on the side (with optional fluorecent coating)
the island is currently a dry-fit, as i still need to flip the ship over for the red/black underside, under the waterline
i also need to start on deck markings, equiping Sea Dart & Phalanx systems, OLS and the airwing.
next on the build list is the Hawkeye AEW.1 (profile see last page)
here's a pic of the ship now, not long now until she's finished

Looking good Nils
I still think the deck looks wrong. I thought Americans called aircraft carriers flat tops for a reason
Way to late to change it now though

Recall that Akagi had a slight banana profile to it, although it was the inverse and aircraft landed "uphill" and rolled to takeoff "downhill".
I'm sure there is a reason why this man-o-war is shaped as is, and we will be informed on a need-to-know basis.
with the workbench (almost) empty and cleaned up again, thought it was time to work on the carrier again.
the work on the island is almost complete, still needs to be (more) painted in some places, not visible in the pictures are the aerial antenna's.
another coat of white will be neccesary :-\

as for the ship, itsself, i just turned it over to start on the bottom, begining with the red paint, black waterline will be added later.
now in its 3rd year of construction (3year mark in october) and its nearing completion, although as noted earlier i cant give you an exact finishing date, but i guarantee, the finished ship will be great sight

It really is starting to take shape now Nils
its been a while, but i have an update.
disaster has struck, this time a joint effort between my mother, a windy day and the carpet monster :-\
my mother opened up a window this morning, white it were force 7 winds out there :banghead:
when i got home, the parts for the CIWS, SeaDarts and OLS and decals were scattered over the floor, i managed to retrieve some of them, the deck decals were luckily enough not damaged, but i lost the Sea Eagles intended for the Sea Tornado GR.2's and 1 of the SeaDart missiles (witch will have to be replaced)
my reaction when i got home:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFZTko2TXNY
But..... were you being held onto by an attractive brunette at the time though, Nils? ;D
Sorry for your loss! :(
UPDATE:
i am only 5 days away from the 3 year mark since the project began, but the news its that the ship is almost finished.
the lost parts have been replaced and Sea Eagle ASM's for the Sea Tornado GR.2's have been aquired.
launchers for th e Seadart missiles still need to be painted and work on the remainder of the airwing is also expected to start soon.
here's a pic of how she looks now.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi307.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn292%2FNilssteyaert%2Fwhat%2520if%2FHMS%2520Kestrel%2F001-14.jpg&hash=2c347bbbfa4449aa47c90ff7cab501b160ec9c5c)
and here's a preview pic of another Aircraft carrier, currently in progress in between.
this is my old BNS Dendermonde, my first attempt at a 1/144 carrier made a number of years ago.
i discovered some cracks in the island superstructure and it had to be replaced. i decided to change the plan and refit it as a STOBAR configured carrier for my own New Flanders Navy, work wont take that long as on the Courageous, as the ships aready here and built.
ive started on the base for the new island superstructure, i still need to work on the front parts and detailing, as this is currently just the rough build. the airwing is to consist of 2 MIG-29K's, 1 MIG-29KUB and 1 EC635N, a single S-70B Seahawk helicopter might be added later aswell as an undetermened AEW platform.
the strange loking mast you see on top is what i like to call the Sea Diamond AESA system, witch reduces the need for AEW aircraft and other naval navigation sensors, as most of the equipment is packed into one mast.
on this image, i placed a sparesbox Rafale and my earlier built MIG-35 for carrier suitability tests.

Crazy!!
Yup, but in a good way
Excellent work.
Don't worry about the time of the build. Their is one of those Partworks currently building a sailing ship that will actually take 18 months longer to complete than the original ship so obviously ship modellers are expected to be a patient lot.
Ingenious use of a Flower class hull.
update.
1 month later and tomorrow's the big day, Sea Trials
the CIWS and missile defences have been fitted, aswell as the OLS.
i just need to do some retouching on the landing-area and then its gonna be picture time.
the ship should be finished tomorrownight, then all thats left is the airwing
WTH, i cant wait till tommorow ;D

Ladies and Gentlemen,
after work has started more then 3 years ago, the day has finaly arrived.
the work on the Royal Navy's new Light Aircraft Carrier, "HMS Courageous", is finanly finished.
earlier this night, she has left the drydock of the bench, out to op waters (or at least the bedsheat) for its sea trials, prior to being handed over to the Brittish Royal Navy.
the only thing that needs to be done is draw some arrestorwires across the deck and a few touch-ups here and there.
otherwise the ship is complete, all thats left to do now is give the Fleet Air Arm the remainder of its airwing (witch is to follow later.
so without further adeu, here are the first pictures of the sea trials
God bless her and all who servo on board her. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHNfvJc99YY)
