since we already had GB's based on some of the worlds greatest fighter aircraft (I love P40's GB and the Spitfire GB) why not organise another one, same rules only instead of P-40's and Spitfires, we use the P-51 Mustang (or A-36 Apache, since it is a mustang derivative) as a basis.
Lots of potential!
All the 'cliche' aircraft make a great base for whiffery and I think the Mustang is one of the top candidates.   Even if it looks a lot like a Mustang when its done.

How about making it a yearly occurance; the Cliche plane GB. This year P51, next year BF109, the year after the FW190... and so forth until we run out of planes, and end up on tanks or something...
And we try to get them on at the same time as serious JMN GBs of similar subjects and flood their forums with our insanity

Yeah...what he said.

Count me!
I reckon my two-seat P-51B nightfighter would fit right in here. Note, a two-seat Mustang nightfighter is not pure whiffery, if anyone has a copy of the old Squadron book Debden Eagles there's a pic in there of a P-51D with the andrear canopy split to allow entry to the second seat and dipole radar antennae on the starboard wing. It's the only pic I've ever seen of such a configuration and I've never seen any write-up. My nightfighter will, however, use the same radar as the F4U-5N.
Plenty of ideas here (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,11386.0.html).
Regards,
Greg

Actually, that top one with the two standard canopies is the way I intend to go with the addition of the wing-mounted radome. The radome will be mounted sufficiently far outboard as to be clear of the ammo bay panels; wouldn't do to foul up expeditious re-arming.
I just wish I could find my copy of Debden Eagles and scan that pic in.
You could set this up like Starship Modeler's Me-109 build of a couple of years ago, wherein all participants were required to use kits of the -109, but the end result couldn't look anything like one when finished. There were 109 jets, and 109 spacecraft, and 109 mecha, and one enterprising modeler (the winner, I think) who turned one into a flying pack for an infantry figure.
You mean this one from Wonderfest 2006.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.starshipmodeler.org%2Fwfest2k6%2F%21v_twc_03.jpg&hash=e1c50ee03ed59b370b76db670344ed2bf44404fe)
The next year they tried the same thing with Shermans but it didn't get the same turnout. Didn't see anything similar since.
I think technically, the Sherminator Challenge never really started and has never officially ended over on SSM.
I think it should be up to the individual whiffer as to whether or not they make something unrecognizable; I mean that does float the boat of some of us, but not all. When we did the spitfire GB there where very few unrecognizable entries as I recall. Maybe the GB should be in two categories: Whiff and Unrecognizable Lords of the Kit Thrash Death Match Arena... or something.
since there are so many ideas for specific planes/tanks GB's, i renamed my idea after puddingwrestler suggestion to do something annually based on a wel known aircraft/tank.
I LIKE GTX's top profile with tandem greenhouse canopies! That looks very "right" somehow - nice one!
Chris Binnet built the OEP. Gorgeous isn't it and it's even better in person. If there were photos available, I'd post his Allumalloy series. You should see what he did with a 1/32 Rufe float turned into a race boat and the SPAD XIII-based race car.

P-51B-15-NT 42-106826 of the 78th Fighter Group at Duxford.
WWII 'hack' conversion.

Just more proof of my infallible good taste...... ;D ;)
We've only got a few days until the proposed Nov. 1st start for this GB. To get it off the ground, we need rules and a moderator, otherwise this one may fall by the wayside.
Time for your input, guys.

I'd be happy to create rules and moderate if people want me to, but if anyone else feels like running things, that's fine by me.
I guess the obvious rule would be:
Thou Shalt Use A P-51 (For this year atleast)

That confused me as well, but I thought if I jumped in an got myself declared 'he who leads the GB' no one would be able to stop us and things would just happen

BdB,
We hereby dock you exactly 3 spats in 1/72 scale! ;D ;D ;D
My only thought was "I gotta get an order in for Pegasus Hobbies Tuskeegee Mustang!"
Daryl J.
What with the exchange rate, that comes to 4.723 spats in 1:87 scale, or 2.117 in 1:48, or a shocking 456.923 in 1:2000...
Damn the international spat exchange rate!

Gentlemen: I hearby bump this thread because I think it a very good idea.
I move we hold it annually, and each year a new cliche machine is chosen. Let us not limit ourselves to planes and tanks, methinks ships and cars could be involved as well, just as long as there are a number of kits of the subject.
'57 Chevies for instance are a car modelers cliche.
I think P-51 Mustangs would be a good starting place, but post your own lists of cliche machines.
And now, a short list of things I think count for cliche subjects:
SF:
Star Trek original series USS Enterprise
Star Wars X-Wing fighter
Aviation:
Supermarine Spitfire (obviously we've done this'n)
P-51
BF 109/ ME 109
FW 190
Automobiles:
1957 Chevy
1964ish Mustang
Late 50s/Early 60s Corvette
Ships:
Dunno. Bismark maybe?
Figures:
Space Marines. Gah.
Real space:
Saturn V rocket
Why limit this to one type? That's a surefire way to minimize participation.
Few additions in RED?

Armour:

you could add corsair and hunter to the planes
and mini to the cars since tamiyas kit is as common as dirt ;D
and i guess jeep would come under armour
How did I forget to include tanks??
I considered ther BSG subjects, but decided against them as the kits were unavailable for a long time. Sure, you see them all the time now, but not so often in the past. I was thinking of only things which have been at EVERY model expo you EVER attended., or atleast for the last twenty years or so.

I've only been to 3 SAPMA Expo's - 2008, 2009 & 2010 - here in Adelaide. Only having returned to modelling in 2008. ;)
