No offense, but what type of camera are you using? Might be nice if future pictures were a little clearer to see more detail. ;)

First shots were problematic because of a poorer quality camera - I then got to borrow a professional grade camera for a bit to snap some before last year when I got my own Canon that shoots quite nicely, but a lot of the problem Then became motion blur - as shots will show, like the Owari, I have acquired a Gorillapod which sits nicely on my desk and stabilizes that trigger-pull motion blur effect.  I also have the problem of somewhat cramped quarters for shooting, as I pop them right on my desk.

Nothing at current, for the most part, that's all my ship builds I've done, barring a couple of them that haven't much to show for them.

Alright, it's 7:30am and I just finished snapping these pictures, gods I need to get to bed.

First up, the IJN Koya - I've been working on her, as the little gremlin in my head said "hey, get her finished, she's not THAT far from done!"  And of course, I listen to the voices in my head, so here we go.  I put in some deck mounted AA positions - referenced them off a picture of one of the Mogami's in '44 before conversion.  I gave her the flight group - two E13A's and a F1M - yeah, it's a lot, and it's a little cramped, but it's not impossible.  It just takes some shuffling before the first one's launched, and this looks good as a dockside view.  I got her masts mounted, and her crest is in place, though unpainted at current.  I got the props from a Skywave IJN aircraft set (they have spares, so I snitched them.) and fitted them in place.  Still a little touching up to be done on the airgroup, a couple of missing meatballs (they fell off the spaghetti) and a float that got a little too gray somewhere (dangit).  PICS!

Ok, that's done.  Now we come to the Owari, which has seen some massive surgery on her.  I took some Yamato turrets, and chopped them to provide the sides and tops for the main guns, Iowa rangefinders are still being used.  I did the deck, picked out details, and set her down in place.  I'm debating whether I do the AA first, or the structure, it's an argument in my head right now, and I'm left to wonder if I have enough 25mm singles to make it, or if I need to take the knife and do some cutting to make Oerlikon 20's look like 25mm gun positions.  Triple 25's will be set in the old 40mm tubs, which should look pretty cool I think.  I also took the time and putty to bulk out the barbettes around the 5" shielded mounts.  Pics!

The Koya's super-firing big guns are trippy.  I look at them and think "that's not right...but it is dead sexy."  So good on ya!

Post by: Sauragnmon on October 09, 2009, 05:05:54 AM
I know it's a rather obscure layout, but the superfiring mounts really were the option that stood best in my mind, with the turret layout as it was.  It let me retain three secondary mounts, kept the big barbettes in close, it really was the best layout that came to mind.  I'm thinking about doing a similar layout with a Takao, though I'll probably commit plastic surgery to put the superfiring mount in place of the C mount, and then invest in a compass cutter to do short barbette plates to support a pair of 14" guns this time - of course, that'll come after the investment in an Ise Hybrid to have the spare turrets on hand.  It'll probably be a lot easier than when I did the barbettes under these guns by bending sheet styrene to shape around a pair of Bismarck Barbette rings, which was STILL easier I think than slicing the chunk of pipe I originally was going to slice to make the barbette rings.  Of course, the linoleum decks have these convenient cross lines and I can just take a square and line up the cuts to slice out around the two barbettes and directionally reverse the mounts with a pair of styrene strips under them to hold them level with the deck.  I've got plans inside my head, partially stemmed from the Von Der Tann concept which should have received similar treatment to shift the barbettes outward so I could put set the guns nice and centerline, but I didn't think of it until too late.

Alright, it's been a little while, and I've been a busy man.  I got into a serious Finish It kick over the last little while, with significant progress on a number of projects.

The Koya's been finished, finally, some time after I started her.  I got the crest on, the masts done, the details are all picked out.  I even added a few extra 25mm triple mounts on the decks to give her more of a "1940's" feel in general with the extra AA additions.  All in all, I'm happy with her, and she's quite the little slugger.  Pics!

I've been working on my Republic of Japan Destroyers, the Shirane and Sawakaze, and I've come to the conclusion - the ROJN concept has posessed me in some ways.  It started with the concept of doing my own VLS fitting from sheet "tile" styrene, then new gun turrets upgraded from the Shielded 5"/50 turrets with more bulk and new gun barrels, and now these two have gone Frankenstein.  I'd already started the concept of using the old Shielded 25mm mountings as the basis for a CIWS mounting, but a couple days back I finally got the CIWS done - I took the gun mounts, and made them completely, then took off the gun barrels.  I followed this up by taking a Phalanx, and carving away the stand, the bracket, the drum, so I had the gun barrel, with a slight extension, and the radar dome.  I then seperated the two, and fitted the gun barrel with extension on the original gun mounting, and put the dome on the back of the turret top.  Looks pretty good, I think, and would logically have a larger ammo capacity than the Phalanx mounting.  Then, I got to the electronics.  The directors you might recognize from Skywave/Dragon Type 42's - apparently, according to Kidcurrie, who served on the T42, the domeless 909's in the kit look Nothing like true 909's, so I figured I'd borrow them for my own Japanese SPG radars.  Then I noticed they both had planar array radars, and when the Shirane had a STIR ball on its aft mast, I thought "you know what, I know something better, let's go for an NTU style suite!" and added the SPS radar seen here - I'm guessing the dish was off an SPS-49, as I jacked one from a DML FFG61, but the base is off an SPS-6 from the Pitroad E6 - I don't know I have anything I'd use SPS-6 on anyways, so it works out.  Combine that to the planar array, and we have the 2d/3d radar combination similar to NTU.  Chop a couple of Mk42 barrels off the mountings, fit them on the front of the bridge, they'll pass for SYS-2 antennae when painted right.  Sawakaze got an extra pair of directors, as she had a second director tower fork.  I chopped down the original forward position, until I could fit the director section over it, puttied a chunk so it had full solidity, and that was that.  Of course, I had to raise the array a little so it would have view over the director, technically, but hey.  Pics!

Here's my latest pictures - the Yamagumo DDK Rebuild.  I made the compact 5" guns from the French 100mm turret, with a Mk45 barrel fitted into them.  I added my own CIWS in place of the old torpedo tubes, as they were superceded by the two quad 24" racks.  Mk29 for additional AAW protection.  All totalled, it's a little more ASuW than ASW, though the heavy torpedoes could be used for both one might reason.  Pictures!

Alright, it's been a little quiet, and I figured I'd take a break between aircraft projects for a moment.  So here's my latest piece - the Project 956M Sovremenny II.  Enclosed launchers, enclosed torpedo tubes with retracting door, VLS for Shtil SAM including enhanced number.  I'll move the salute guns to the forward 630 positions, since I'm going to modify the aft positions for Kashtans.  I'm considering modifying the aft radar setup for a Hot Flash dome, but I digress.

So far, I've got the hull and decks done for the most part - I'll have to come back and add some louvres around the launcher area for blast ventilation.  Anyways, enough yapping, pictures!

Thankyou for the words, gentlemen.

Proditor - I find myself often mashing the US ships to try and improve on them, while the Russian ships I absolutely love the look of, and often rework the fit more.  This one's out for modernization and decreased RCS when I'm done.  Enhanced capability all around is the plan.

Cobra - I haven't played them in a few years, but they did get me sort of inspired on the idea.  I've been plunking along on this one, I figure she'll be finished soon if I keep it up, then I can get on with my Alt Luftwaffe build, which I won't be stalled on like my damn Navalize It build because the markings will be much simpler.

Continuing on the plodding along, another update on the Sovremenny II.  More paintwork, more detailing.  Some of the life rafts are on, most of the Fire Control and ECM sets are in place.  Base for the Top Plate is on, and the Kashtans are finished.  I also took my first try at a brass mast - I was unsatisfied with the original plastic mast, so I took a whack at one of the brass masts in the kit - nine pieces to build it, but it looks good I think.  I didn't add the extra fiddly bits, satisfied with the austere basic of the mast itself.  Anyways, pics!

It's been a little while since I showed something in here, but hey, that's the kind of guy I am.  I got a few things in the last couple of days, so a couple of my projects got a little attendance.  First up, the Frunze got the radar set I wanted to put on her for short range work - Plate Steer.  I got this in the Flyhawk Russian Radar set - Beautiful set, mind the fiddly bits, like the back of the Top Steer/Plate Steer dishes, they're spindly and touchy.  All told, I think it came out nicely.  That said, the Long Beach got the start of her new tower - no, that stack is not staying, I'm just not entirely sure what to do with that yet - do I turn it into a deckhouse, do I cut it off, I'm not sure just yet.  Ideas welcome.  Anyways, enough talk, time for the thousand words part - Pics!

"Houston, we got photo etch!"  :o Nice work on the PE stuff. Also have that Flyhawks Russian Radar Set. Not sure what to use it on, though. The instructions kinda scare me. New to PE and this looks pretty darn complicated and fiddly.

Just noticed the re-designed SSM launchers on the Sovremenny. Just one word: Cooooool!

Dankeshon, Moritz - the etch was... interesting.  Long Beach also, if you look, has etched VLS cells... those were just Fun *sarcasm dripping off the words* to build.  I picked up the etch set originally for the Flat Screen radar, with plans to put that into use on one of my projects.  The instructions are a little confusing I will admit, Moritz, but I found with the Plate Steer set, they don't quite recommend the most effective way to go about it.  When I built the dish, I started by rolling the dish, then the back piece - I set the upper and lower edges to the back of the dish, then the center beam points, and folded the braces into place.  The instructions require a little bit of thinking outside the box, as they don't quite go together as the pictures suggest, so you have to work with what's there and go from that point.

Thankyou about the Sovremenny II - I intended it to be a subtle look, and to retain a semblance of that sharp look that is the Sovremenny, just focusing on stealth aspects and more modern equipment.

The photo etch radar set looks good.  I also like how your Long Beach is shaping up.  I know that guns were mostly an afterthought, but I always wondered why the original 5"/38s were never beached in favor of 5"/54s, so those Mk.45s look nice.  I see the VLS; will you also be going with Aegis radars?

The etch radar is quite an interesting set, and I like the variety of details it adds for the Russian ships - quite a comprehensive set for the search and lighter director radars.  Long Beach is getting 5/62's in truth, not 5/54's - I have a set of the Sea MAster 5/62 barrels for the broadside, and a plan for something bigger in a 10" or so bore on the bow for a nice shore-pounding gun.  AEGIS is the prime reason for the structure rebuild, well, that and trying to get rid of some of her Ugly-Stick heritage.  I'm also going to double up CIWS and RAM systems on board, in a centerline/broadside pairing, and give her a helicopter hangar in place of her old aft launchers.  I'm toying with other ideas for additions, not sure entirely just yet.

Been a little while since I posted anything here.  I've been a busy guy the last couple of days, building and working on ships that have either been waiting for a cue, or half-built for a while.  Two Abukuma DE's, and a Yamagumo DDK.  Pictured is my previous Yamagumo as well, just for kicks and giggles.  I'm not entirely sure what to put on the aft of the new Yamagumo, so ideas are welcome.  Anyways, here we go:

I really like the colors on those ships, Saur. Glad to see you getting a few out of drydock!

I'm really grooving the feel you have for those ships.  It's hard to make a ship in such a way that you look at it and go "Well that's obviously British/Mogolian/Yemeni, etc."  I think you've done a really good jobs of personalizing these ships to make them LOOK like they're from the ROJN and not just a cobbled together bit from here and there.

Rise, thread of glory, from the Dead!

Alright, it's been a long time coming, but here she finally is - Shinano, with her full compliment of aircraft, by my hand!

Pics are pretty straightforward.  Airgroup is C6N Scouts, J7W Fighters, D4Y Divebombers and B7A Attack Planes.  Justification for the J7W being a need for heavy hitting fighters - The answer to the hook solution came to me - put the hook further forward, so it hangs from the center fuselage - on Most aircraft that would result in a sharp pull forward when it engages, but in the case of the Shinden, it's actually possible, because of that nose gear, to resist the forceful slam of the nose to the deck when the hook kicks in.  The ship still has D4Y Dive bombers because of limited production of the B7A, which was intended to do both Dive and Level bombing.
