Title: Sci Fi Whiffs - park them here
Post by: philp on June 10, 2009, 10:20:33 PM
Ok, since we have a kajillion different topics in the Whiffs you have found, I figured I would make another

So, since most Sci Fi is Whiffery, pretty much anything is fair game here.  I would not count models that depict movie, TV, etc models. However, a whiffed version of an X-wing with WWII markings would still fit this thread.

So, get posting.

First up (and the reason for the thread ).

I think these fit into this topic.  They are all part of a Sci Fi diorama I build a few years ago.

"Babylon 5" Starfury converted to NASCAR style racer.

A "Space 1999" Eagle marked as an old U-Haul van.

A "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" Flying Sub as an Arrakis Oceanographic research vessel.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi213.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc250%2Fesveum%2FMVC-650X.jpg&hash=3383a9721918bd720deb49e8498b4b7690ca2c6c)

A "Star Wars" X-wing fighter done as a crop duster.

More of a Luft 46 then Sci fi .
Done with a pair of Fw-190's and an ME -262

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg243.imageshack.us%2Fimg243%2F1387%2Fs6300146vn6.jpg&hash=fd51c60ca6fde30801ec522af527dc7878589f47)

And here is a Next Generation Space Shuttle built using the Heller Ariane 5 as the booster and an old Intergalactic UFO Mystery Ship kit more famous as the Lief Erickson from AMY from the late 60's and early 70's. Try and guess the big corporate sponsor.

Hey, that's my Flying Sub before it got put on the diorama.  (See my post earlier in this thread.)  I forgot that someone had photographed it and put it on the web when I took it in to a meeting.

Here is another one I built a few years ago. The story behind this one is the Klingons wanted a ship tat could stand up to repeated Dominion attacks and still deliver a good fight back at them.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg154.imageshack.us%2Fimg154%2F2842%2Fvtadsc00466ef8.jpg&hash=ff3bda19ea9920a6cb6e5749939df33d293996dd)

I mated an x-wings nose to the aft section of a D-7 and added greilies to add detail.there are parts of an ALQ-119 ECM pod, parts from an AMT Enterprise,A center console from a car kit,a twizzle stick and an HO scale tank trurret for the bridge.

Here is another one from Wonderfest 2007 that was built by someone else from a D-7 kit.

A modified Romul;an Warbird from the old original AMT Star Trek 3 ship set. I removed the engines and replaced them with a pair of 1/48th scale ALQ-119 ECM pods for a newer look. They came from the ESCI weapons set in 1/48th scale.

That Shagohod looks rather interesting. Cool box-art. Very "Soviet propaganda"-like with the other tanks (which were projects as well, if I'm not mistaken) and the Hind-As. Only think missing is some young conscript squaddie stickin' an AK in the photographer's face with a defiant, "steely-eyed defender of Socialism"-look on his face. Very atmospheric.

Interesting bike, love those sets above as well.

The Shagohod, I would love to get one in like 1/144 or 1/72 depending on the size, one of these days.  The Tanks as you pointed out, Moritz, are the Object 279 if I recall the number right - look at the elliptical hull and the fact it's got two sets of twin side-by-side tracks on it, ostensibly to survive a nuclear war in principle.

Seriously awesome work on that one - though I would have questioned whether a Sherman was the prime choice - it might have been more multi-genre to give it to a Soviet tank.

Mossie, a note - I'm 26 and fully loved the original Transformers cartoon and had a number of the toys as well, and even a few of the comics.

I'm a tad older, 33 & was around eight years old when they came out, just the right age!  It was actually the Robo/Gobot range that first got me hooked, I saw the advert on TV & to quote James May, it was enough excitement to make an eight year old faint, and I did!  I immediatley pestered my Mum for Christmas, Transformers came out shortly after, got one of those instead & they were much better anyway, never looked back.

I still get a smile on my face when I see them, in fact I still have a G1 Ultra Magnus & a small Decepticon car that I've long forgotten the name of!

From deviantart via Starship Modeler, I present an AAT (Trade Federation tank) in a paint scheme called "Arctic Kitten" (inspired I think by Alaskan Aggressor schemes):

I made exactly the same mistake when looking at a Trade Federation tank at the Nationals, very first thought was that it was a Tau Devilfish.  There are definately some strong similarities in their general design.

I love good sci-fi kitbashes like that, where you can spot what a lot of the components are by looking really closely, but they don't leap out and hit you between the eyes when you sit back and take in the whole effect.

Nostalgia: I think the grab on the Garbage Collector is a type of printer or typewriter ribbon cartridge that I used to look at speculatively when I worked in an office 20 years ago, but I wasn't modelling then...... :banghead:

So, they are action figures.  Looks like they have all the posable parts so would take a little putty and repaint to enter.

Still, great prices on them.

Lovely looking Cobra Mk.III from the old Elite computer game from a bloke called Ian Lawrence, looking at the texturing & equipment, probably Frontier: Elite II.  Lights 'n everythink.

Spent huge chunks of my childhood on this series of games!

What a brilliant idea.  I have always wanted to do an Air Show diorama so I could showcase multiple models at the same time in a setting that works.
This would make a great club or SIG display.  Lots of kits in 72nd that could be used and populate the show with some Preiser figs...

Certainly one of the two best artists I've seen (along with Christopher Foss).
You may recognise some of his characters in childrens TV shows & books.

I got his Ice Spirit poster in 1977 & it's even more awesome than on the computer screen.
Some of his insect rockband pics are good too -- keep an eye out for the Tigermoth bi-plane in the background of one !!

I've been a fan of Doug Drexler's work since ST:TNG.  He has a blog over on Wordpress, and he's always posting images from his more recent Trek-related work as well as current projects like SyFy's series Caprica.  I haven't watched that show since the first couple of episodes, so I don't know if this is something that was actually seen on the show.  It's supposedly a Caprican Viper ancestor.

Some further info on that ARC fighter:
There was a build report of this ARC fighter in a German modelling mag. The idea for this build was born when the builder (apparently a die-hard Star Wars fan) was asked by a club colleague whether he intended to build "one of these ADAC-or-whatnot fighters". The funny thing is that the ADAC is the German equivalent of the US and UK (American) Automobile Association. They also operate several doze air rescue helicopters. Some time in the future (or a long time ago in a galaxy far away?) they will also have to help broken-down space travellers. Wonder whether they will provide "stellar" service?

That "combat car" is a nice model, but it doesn't match the description given in the stories at all.  A Slammers' combat car is an open-topped vehicle with three tri-barrel weapons on pintle mounts, one forward and the other two on the sides with firing arcs that cover from fore to aft.

Someone what-if-ed an AEW support version of the Robotech Alpha a.k.a. Mospeada Legioss (found here (http://wiki.livedoor.jp/ebatan3/d/%ca%a3%ba%c2%b7%bf%a5%ec%a5%ae%a5%aa%a5%b9)).

IMHO, the radar gear might have come from the Macross Frontier's VF-171...... but then again I'd reckon that it's the central idea that matters, not the source of parts that built the mental picture.

=====================================================================

The Genia looks pretty cool, too, as it reminds me of a proto-Alpha/Legioss that inherited some major parts of the VF-1 although what info I could find online points to a mecha going by the name Condor (this (http://www.xs4all.nl/~ptn/Veritech/Condor.html)?  Good question- I've no clue).

I love the idea of an intermediate model built on a previous generation one- like Japanese Marcoss's VF-X-4, also built on the forward fuselage of the VF-1.  Palladium Books also came up with their own take on a proto-Alpha with VF-1 cockpit and nose.

Not sure if this one's been posted before, but it combines two models I've got going/will do soon:  the 2001 Moon Bus and a lunar rover based on the RoG 1/72 6x6 Hummel.

I always thought it might be neat to do something with 1/35 dinosaurs.  It's nice to see I was right.

The second piece is an impressive kitbash, given that that Hardgraph truck was originally a hovercraft.

That's not Ratel, it's a Rooikat hull.  ;)  Still a Whif though ... unless that's the long-elusive ICVTD (Infantry Combat Vehicle Technology Demonstrator)!

Also thought it was a Rooikat at first, but the distance between the second and third axle is too long and the distance between the third and fourth axle is far too short for that. I'd also guess it's a modified Ratel.

The side windows arn't extras - a Ratel has four exactly similar ones on the right hand side. The front one is lower than the other three because it's set in the side door, not the hull. I presume the doors are non-funtioning on this one.

It has working rear doors (seen in an out-take).  Not sure wheter the engine IS moved to the front as there is a large black box in the center of the troop area -- probably the engine is moved forward enough to have full-width doors for the entry photo-shoot.

There is a website of the vehicle maker (buys & sells ex-army trucks etc) but it's in Africaans.

I meant the side doors, but good point about the full width rear ones. I found a still showing that the left-hand side door still works, but it looks like the right hand one is sealed.

The front end of the red one was a Kaman 'Huskie' helicopter in a previous life.....  ;D

The build is direct from Thunderbirds.  Used a couple of Testors 1/32nd Huskies and a Monogram 48th scale B-58.  I have a book on the Thunderbirds and they give a breakdown of that build. Just a drawing but almost enough data to recreate the ship.

He's on the right side of the pic, third Viper down from the top of the pic.

The buggy is an "Elysian Tauros Venator" from Forgeworld for Warhammer 40,000.

Just found this on a UK blog for a gamers site.  Display at the Crewe show on the SFM:uk table.

Those markings are the ones created by Jay Chladek from Starshipmodeler, for a contest help by a UK website to pick a scheme for a Battlestar with a British theme. Jays design was the winning entry and they made a set of decals for him to put on his viper. They chose the name Excalibur for the ship and the markings are basedon WWII Spitfire roundels from early on in the war. You can see it when you take the very front of the nose stripe and cover half of the end where it starts to become straight. You will see Jays Model at the top of the second picture. It has the American Flag in a shape like the  New England Patriots of the NFL .

was watching that TV program about moving heavy items like houses, locomotives etc & this week they featured a certain aeroplane that couldn't fly out due to a mechanical fault.  A usually annoying part of the program is when they "cut up" an object (usualy by a wire-frame computer drawing) to show how it may look if its dropped & wrecked.  They now seem to have better software to slice & dice items -- this is the result on this aircraft .....
