Title: Northrop AX-1 MiniWarthog
Post by: Rafael on November 24, 2008, 02:25:52 PM
Always liked this plane.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FWarthogA-10NorthropAX-1revised1.jpg&hash=b107925d842cbdd6d5b582ab7a2421a475ddf878)

But never made it past the planning stage. Last weekend, though, I grabbed some styrofoam, wood and plastic and started it. Here's what I have so far:

Carved the shape out of foam
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4250.jpg&hash=97d9c19ea02fc06ecdc09d1be0e3bf55404893d7)

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4252.jpg&hash=09d4a3801057f01a35997961bd4e7102d0f571f2)

Made the wings out of some styrene scraps
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4254.jpg&hash=baac6a4bcc3f8b746bafe398dd42bf81f01fb39e)

Sealed, puttied, and sanded. Made the air inlets from a plastic tube
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4255.jpg&hash=189ba014e9f365c06d319db7a5e5a0b64eaff7b9)

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4256.jpg&hash=50faef17aa0c7993b696123cbdce27e06d7b518f)

And primed to see the many flaws it has
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi132.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq14%2Frafaelgonzalez65%2FNorthrop%2520AX-1%2520MiniWarthog%2FNorthropAX-1MiniWarthogIMG_4257.jpg&hash=2371b7f2ef5103f7ec66d82d04fc699db5f0ee99)

A lot less to do to complete now. I still have to finish the rear propeller (a scimitar shaped 8-bladed very different job from the diagram), make the canopy framing, and hang some ordnance. Then to the paint shop

Saludos

Rafa

You absolutely amaze with with your skills. The day I can produce anything out of out of styroform and cardboard, then I'll feel like I've accomplished something. Good looking work!

Thanks, amigos!!!

This is really fun, and quite relaxing.

I made the propeller with plasticard, cast a spinner in resin molding the point of a pen, installed the wings, and made the maing gear carriage sponsons with wood. Here's the progress for tonight:

Brilliant Rafa.  I like the idea of using the foam.  It looks like it should produce a good model.

Thanks, my friends.
Today I grafted the weapons pylons. Made a gun pod with balsa wood and a bit from a paper clip. I intended to make it resemble an off-centre Oerlikon KCA installation, say a KCA 25mm. The small FLIR/LRTMS turret in the front was made kneading a little sawdust with white glue and put on a small plastic disk.

I would have almost gone with twin 30mm cannon similar to on the Do-335B2

That's awesome, Rafa! Great work. And let me get this straight, you have foam, wood, plastic, resin, filler putty, and even a little piece of metal paper clip??? That's what I call ingenuity. IT's beyond multimedia....it's like.....hypermedia. Please tell me you're making the tires for the landing gear from real rubber...

Jon

Jon

.....not to mention a mix of talc and withe glue to make some kind of "mud" to seal the foam from the attack of the putty. And cardboard (Yum!!!) for the canopy frames.

The cannon installation Greg mentions is great, but I chose to use this arrangement because of who the end user of this plane is.....

Thanks, my friends. You really make my spirits soar. I haven't been able to sit at the workbench save for a few shortspans of time this week, and that is to fashion two multiple missile launcher tubes.

More to come...

What the-----wait, huh----how'd you do that, again?

You have always been, and always will be, the Master Chef of Whiffery, Rafa.

I picture you listening to Perez Prado's faster Mambo music while whipping these concoctions together like a Chef in the kitchen!!!

Barry!!!! Good to see you!!! That image of me dancing Perez Prado's "Mambo No. 5" while making a model sure brought a good laugh.

Well, here she is, painted in a hurriedly improvised splinter scheme and awaiting her decals and warloads.
