Title: F-111/Aardvark/Pig GB
Post by: GTX on October 17, 2008, 11:41:13 AM
Folks,

A proposal for a GB sometime next year (plenty or warning  ;D).  Given that 2009 is the last full year the RAAF F-111s are planned to be operated, maybe a GB dedicated to the F-111 before it goes out of service.  Thoughts?  I'd be willing to be moderator (there that part is already done).

Regards,

Greg

I would be in because IMO F-111 is one of the most elegant planes in the world. :cheers:

Given I've done 50+ Pig profiles, I've got a hankering to knock one 2gether... (or two, or three or... :party:)

I wonder what people would say if I said "I might be able to organise a flight in a F-111 as a prize"?

Since the ARC guys just finished an F-111 GB, may I suggest we expand the scope somewhat and allow other side-by-side twin seat supersonic strike aircraft, like the TSR.2 or the Vigilante, or for that matter the Fencer? I've been contemplating a USAF A-5D as a replacement for the F-111; as well as a USN A-5E conventional supersonic strike aircraft, and this would give me an excuse... :-)

I suggest a counter proposal: Include types that were evaluated by or offered to the RAAF during the selection process that led to the purchase of the F-111.

So that would allow, amongst others:

Vulcan
Vigilante
Mirage IV
Buccaneer
B-47
B-58
F-4 Phantom
TSR-2

Just a thought....

:cheers:

Sorry guys, but those proposals would kind of defeat the underlying purpose of the GB - a tribute to the F-111 which will be going out of service.  Re ARC's GB, I am proposing this one for sometime next year, so there shouldn't be a problem.

Greg

I'd have to give it serious thought... I've got a SparkVark destined for a RW build as part of my EW birds collection... but a WHIF SparkVark in CAF 414 (EW) Sqdn colours ca. mid 1980's.

Nice to pay homage to an old warrior this way, in the build or not... I like the idea.

There is an F-111B conversion now available in 1/72 from Australia for those wishing to do the Interceptor variant, however it only represents the prototypes and not the pre-production version with the raised cockpit and slightly longer nose.

That'd be just like the original Revell kit then? You could build an A or B from the bits in the box. I bet harly anyone made a B though!

Who does the kit please and where would I get one from?

Shameless Plug for new GB Poll!

After all folks - consider this:  The last operational F-111s are starting to be replaced (see here (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,25775.15.html)).

I may even be able to offer a cool prize.

Greg

I'm happy with any timeline so long as it finishes this year.

I'm also happy to allow already started models so long as they fit into the rules and are not actually finished at the time the contest starts.

Now go get yourself ready to vote for this GB or else I'll put you on Carlo Kopp's mailing list (mind you that might also be a prize...)

Greg

the BAC Filton open day bird,  escape pod above on chute, a rack of ordanace  Vs in front, a nd one wing off with the pivot pin  by the landing gear.  ( they used to sevice them there when i was growing up and thats one of the displays that used to be there every year, along with the 1:72 scale Nimitz deck loaded with planes)

I don't think its blasphemy - in fact, no-one could call the F-111 'pretty'.  It's a brute - the name 'Pig' suits it well.

Remember:

  • It's the last year of F-111 operations - this makes a nice tribute;
  • I am already volunteering to be moderator - honestly, it's a positive thing;
  • I already have a very rare, nifty prize sorted out;
  • There's a number of relatively new F-111 kits available;
  • There's quite a few conversions/accessories available as well;
  • There's plenty of ideas available here (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,5006.0/highlight,f-111.html) and here (http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,27180.0.html) amongst others; and
  • I am willing to use the Carlo Kopp mailing list threat if you don't vote for me (trust me, I have ways of finding out...)!

Regards,

Greg

The threat won't work on me.  I've been a friend of Carlo's for over 15 years.  I know his email address and he knows me.   :mellow: :mellow:

Although after a rummage in the attic I have found an old F-111 that may need a rebirth

Nope , sorry -a F-111 must be used or at least sufficient parts there-of.  Since this is the last year of F-111 ops world wide, the idea of the GB is as a tribute to it.
