Title: MiGina The Second
Post by: sotoolslinger on September 18, 2008, 12:46:18 PM
Well heck this is just typical :banghead: I just found out this morning that this GB had been extended .I got the point of installing the Gina nose on the MiG when my company called :banghead: I have to be in Fresno, Cali.Monday am :banghead: So here is where she sets at this point
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi253.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh50%2Fsotoolslinger%2FMiGina%2FIMG_1699.jpg&hash=cd1457baf5be214857499646da44d9d06036d80f)

If I have time I plan on finishing it like this

But the backstory will be that Texas aquires them from Venezuela in exchance for future fighter developments so it will have RoT markings

This should be interesting.  I'm curious to see how you get these fuselages to match up.

Yep I will be interested to see how I do that too ;D  But heck I made a Typhoon nose fit on a Hellcat
I will be careful with the knee .It's far from 100% but I should just be pointing at stuff and giving directions

Well, just tell 'em no! Sheesh, I don't know why I always have to come up with these ideas.

I can see a lot of putty in your future, that step is vicious.

And get rid of those ciggies, they'll stunt your growth. Stunted mine but I won't tell you where...

Eeek! Competition!  ;D

Like everybody else, I want to see how you're going to blend these two: looking at the profile, I'd have said the Migina 2 just had the G.91 nose cone stuck straight onto the MiG intake and the canopies swapped, but hey, it's your fecking model, right?

I see a socking great cannon muzzle sticking out of that gap.....

If I had to match that nose with that fuse, what I'd do is cut the intake off the Gina nose and just let the bottom of the fuse act as the intake. In that shot it looks like the rest of the Gina nose would match up better that way.

Your mileage may vary...

Well the gina cockpit sets much farther forward than the MiG's .It looks to me that Arc's profile has the cockpit moved forward so that is what I was going for ;D

Geez, if I had gaps like that, I'd break out the bondo.  Fill the gaps, blend the curve on the nose into a single smooth bump, smooth it to the fuselage, sand, cut the lines, drill the gunports.  Hell, I did similar work on the Kiev II, had to square off and fill out a section of the bridge deck so I could mount the Kashtan.  My bondo and I have become well acquainted since I started work on the Udaloy II project.  I had to rebuild part of the aft superstructure, and we've worked together on a few other small gap filling spots.

I fear no putty ;D

A wise modeller fears no putty, instead he practices zen and is one with the putty.  You've got a little bit of work ahead of you to smooth that join out, but it should be quite impressive when she's smoothed out and finished.  I look forward to seeing it.

Ouch, that's going to need some sanding to smooth out the gouges you made... could have just puttied a smooth transition rounding over the cannon ports and drilled them in at the join.  Still going to need some work at that little ridge at the top of the nose join though.

Looking good so far though!
Title: Re: MiGina The Second
Post by: sotoolslinger on September 24, 2008, 09:26:18 AM
Actually those gouges will be covered in putty . I had to cut the excess material away to transition from the oval shape of the MiG to the  8 shape of the Gina. For the cockpit I will fill it with clay after installing the fairing from the Gina fuselage and then press it into a layer of epoxy putty on the MiG. That will give me a platform on the fuselage that will match the contours of the Gina canopy.

I think our old friend Mr Putty-Sand-Repeat will be dropping in soon.

I'm skeptical that you did enough removal then to transition it smoothly, but then I'm looking at a relatively flat image, and I'm not in your shoes, sotool.. though you could have used the rounded shape and the slight protrusion over the Gina nose to cover the gun ports a little more, allowing a narrower field of fire in perspective.  I don't know, I'm probably rambling.  I don't have the kits, and I haven't worked with either, so I can't really say anything definitive, but you're doing a bash-up job so far!  Keep working that sledgehammer, man!

Looks like it's coming along nicely.  This is one of those modification jobs that a belt sander would be the best tool to start with.

Belt sanders..... you know how they run down when you release the trigger  That's how you use them . on a long flat , or just slightly curved  surface....run it up to speed , place the surface in close proximity, align, release the trigger , touch the surface you want sanded to the belt as it slows to a stop ;D
If you sand the bottom off your boat  I will swear I never said any of that ;D
Carefully hand sanding  the MiGina

Wow - I wouldn't have believed that those two pieces could come together as effectively as that - well done!

Question - how did you fill the sawn-off chunk of MiG? Did you put a piece of plastic card behind it before cutting and then fill in the resulting trough, or what?

My good friend epoxy putty. Specifically the kind made for fiberglass boats. It sticks to styrene very well.  I made the cuts to blend the Mig to the Gina nose with the dreaded Dremel tool with a drum sander bit and then just went in through the Gina intake with a probe.

Now to keep me from having to stop sanding and puttying ....Would a MiGina be concurrent with wingtip Sidewinders
Assuming that the Rot acquires the MiGina design from Venezuela sometime during the late 50's early 60's and either rebuilds or copies them as a subsonic ground attack /troop support aircraft would they be equipped with Sidewinders for defense?

Cool  I didn't know if Sidewinders had been invented that early.
Here is todays progress .I got up early enough to put another layer of putty but I had to work today :banghead:
So when I got back to the motel I PSR'D and slammed on a coat of primer so I could see where I was
Then while I was waiting on paint to dry I fully assembled the wings (full disclosure... the MiG-15 I got at Supercon was partially built) the  wings were put together (without flaps or landing gear doors) but already had the drop tanks installed. I will make the DT'S cannon pods.

I look at the way you do your body meshing and putty work and all I can say is you are one fearless modeler! I haven't got the guts to do all that PSR, I'm always afraid it won't come out. I am in envy of the way you can make any parts work together!

Fear not  If it don't work you can always start over. :party:That , of course , is flippant :banghead: Models are frikken expensive and so are putty and glue and .....etc :banghead: But this entire site is about artistic expression and for that you must bleed

Well I'm trying to make sure that bleeding isn't from an ulcer!  ;D  When I screw I usually screw up big and tend to not be able to fix it without going crazy.  :banghead: I think a big part of my problem is that I have limited time and so many projects in progress and waiting in the line-up that I tend to want to rush the PSR process which isn't usually a good idea.

I CAN'T rush things because after about an hour of fiddling with fiddly things, my patience snaps and I have to walk away before I break something: this is why I'm up to the wire on every GB so far.

I don't see why wingtip Sidewinders shouldn't work on a MiG-15 wing. Tip rails can cause aeroelasticity problems on swept wings, but the MiG-15 wing is relatively conservative, i.e. wide, thick and not that swept. Here's an idea: instead of having them evenly spaced on the tip, why not have them set forwards (i.e. with their tail fins level with the trailing edge), so that they act as anti-flutter weights?

Awwww cr4p - sorry to hear that, mate.

Look on the bright side - it hasn't affected the major PSR you've done on the nose, and the joints that have broken will require only minor filling.

And helicopters? Spawn of Satan - I nearly got brained by a Russian cop for pointing a camera at a perfectly ordinary Mil-8 flying by many years ago. They don't fly you know: they're just so ugly that the earth rejects them, so it'd probably have broken your camera if you had got the shot...

Yeah, I've cursed when I bumped something and one of my projects got trashed.  Much swearing ensues.  That just hurts, man.  At least the seams just cracked, and as Weaver said, you can fill them easily enough.  It could be worse, you could have lost the nose and all that PSR work you did.  I would have made the model Actually fly at that point.  At least you still have the parts, and the work is minimal to repair.  It still hurts the sanity, for certain.

Yeah, the fit of the gear doors looks hauntingly familiar from the Migina 1.....

However, if the last picture is drawing attention to the asymetric tailplane roots then STOP: step AWAY from file, because it's actually right! Strange but true, MiG-15s really do only have an elevator trim tab on one side. The MiG-9's the same, and it threw me too until I looked it up.

Probably best to PM a Mod to get the thread moved.

Looking good! I managed to drop my Tomcat just after I posted it as "finished" - it lost both wing pylons and weapons, and a tailplane. Most annoying. I did find all the bits though. :banghead:

Trim tabs aren't just for counteracting torque steer - they are used for holding the aircraft at a certain attitude - eg. during a climb, rather than hauling the stick back and holding it there through the entire duration of the climb, you use the controls to put the aircraft at the right attitude, and then adjust the trim tab until the aircraft stays there. Makes it easier on the pilot.

EDIT: There's a bit of info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trim_tab

My guess is that it's not an extra trim tab, it's the only trim tab. With it being so close to the centreline they probably found that it didn't produce any significant rolling moment, so they left the other one off, thereby simplifying the mechanism, linkages etc...

Sidewinder rails look good......

My country will never know how much it lost selling those MiGinas to ROT. :banghead: :banghead:

But I'm happy, 'cuz they will never be in better hands, I mean, look at the reworked fuselage, the new, supermodern tinted canopy, the wingtip launchers, the new, uprated engines, the Big, Honking Guns, the masterfully applied tiger camo.

This is not only a work of art, Sotool, this is also a work of love.

Great looking bird, there's everything I like in this build.

Nice recovery there Toolslinger my friend   Although, instead of repainting, you could have just weathered it perhaps?  With what youve done here you could give some kit manufacturers lessons on how to make parts fit. I know Im late for the party (Hey Girls are ALWAYS late for parties so nuh   ) and shes nearly done, but, one idea to stash away for the future, how about Overwing Sidewinder rails?

That's looking mighty fine, Toolslinger - good recovery!

Been trying to think what the new tiger scheme reminds me of - think I've seen similar (but not the same) shades on an Indian MiG-21. That's a very "tigerish" sharkmouth, with it's scalloped gum-line and all - nice choice!

Now a suggestion, although it might be a bit late since you've already made the wing pylons.

The further outboard you go an a swept wing, the harder it is to mount big stores, because you're getting further and further behind the centre of gravity. For this reason, MiG-17s (dunno about -15s), -19s, Su-7s etc... often had inboard pylons ahead of the main gears. These plyons had to stretch a long way forward of the leading edge for obvious reasons, and even then, they couldn't carry very long stores.

Your triple stores (what are they, by the way?) might just go on such an inboard pylon, although they're pretty long themselves.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F3%2F3e%2FK-5M_Air-to-Air_Missile.jpg%2F300px-K-5M_Air-to-Air_Missile.jpg&hash=007740f226fd2e04641ea0e709b50ca592c69f80)
Title: Re: MiGina The Second
Post by: sotoolslinger on October 23, 2008, 06:43:51 AM
The triple stores are just very bad HVARS from a Lindberg F-100  ;D I used two different pylons I had in the (limited) stash o parts I have with me on the road.
The backstory is that after receiving the MiGinas from Venezuela the Texicans use the design to build their own version with uprated engines ,weapons ,and avionics (as well as an extremely sexy tinted canopy ;D) but due to a lack of area ruling they remain subsonic. They are primarily used as bomber intercepters, and ground support craft. They do see limited use as fighters but are to be replaced in that role by 1965.
Thanks for all y'alls comments . I hope to get more done today  ;D
