Title: 31 Sqn RAF RF-4 Phantom
Post by: bexwh773 on June 28, 2008, 04:28:04 PM
Ello Gang, well just before Jennings Hellig ON Britmodeller cranked out his RAF RF-4 CG Profile WHERE I FIRST SAW IT Hatchet & I were discussing it and had I not been missing the RF nose, my last Phantom would have been this one, but now Ive got all the bits, its party time. We have an Italieri box, with Testors airframe & various Revell FGR2 parts with the addition of an Airies RF-4B Cockpit supplied by the wonderful Graham @ Relish and the 31 Sqn Decals are enroute in the post from a friend on another forum  :drink:

Heres the pre assembly gratuitous box & parts photos with a Squadron badge I found on the web.

Lets just say that pig of a Vulcan Ive nearly finished is a walk in the park compared with this pile of junk soon to be gorgeous sexy wonderful dream boat Phantom      The back story is still being worked on and will be published with the completed model.

Thanks for looking.

Sorry folks, that will teach me to be lazy wont it, I copied this over from my own forum and I didnt realise Jennings was in these parts too  :banghead:

Aeroplane Driver, its funny you should call it an FR.3, I was just clearing my emails of my latest order from Relish when your reply dropped in my mailbox, for a Hasegawa Weapons set so Id have some Sidewinders for it to defend itself

Bex,

I hope you acquired the stores pylons from that Revell kit for your project.  The Italeri parts are a bit on the thin side, other than that, it is a good source for RF-4 parts.  Looking forward to seeing the finished model.

Ow do Jeffry, yup, got the FGR2 pylons thank god and Im hoping my weapons set wil be here tomorrow (Tues). Ive never touched an Airies cockpit before in my life so please excuse this first attempt. Ive got some touching up to do where Ive slipped with the black, got the throttle & joystick painted & rear IP so far. Wings have gone together like a dream, Ive never had that before with any kit and this ones really pants so was a huge surprise.

Thanks for looking

Jeffry,

Im going to fit some Sidewinders on the pylons, two drop tanks on the wings & an EMI Pod on the centre line. Tonights effort then, cockpit is finished and is now waiting for the glue to dry, just got the bang seats to do and the whole Airies Office is done   So heres a couple of photos for your perusal, so as a first ever resin cockpit, please be gentle......... Pretty Please

Thanks for looking

Also, I couldnt find any photos of an RF-4 Cockpit, so I used every Phantom Cockpit photo I could find, the pic on the box and a bit of Bexy's imagination.

John, thanks matey, might pluck up the courage to get another one or two for my remaining 48th Phantoms, maybe

Jeffry, I know the EMI Pod would be officially doubling up on sensors, but Im going to see what other sensor package I can come up with for it

A small update on this mornings efforts then. Cockpit is now fitted into the airframe and Ive had to fit a piece of lolly stick into one hole and a clear piece of plastic sheet to fill another........ fine sense of humour   :banghead:  I also noticed that when I fit the wings Im also going to have to fill large gaps between the lower fuselage & wing roots aswell, however, i got around this with a wooden lolly stick. Plus the engines will take some serious work to fit  But, am I enjoying this build? All things considered yes I am and Ive learnt a lot so far.

Here you can see the bits of wood used to stop the forward part of the wings from dipping into the fuselage and the cross member I fitted to spread the lower fuselage out and the filler used to fill small holes behind the cockpit rear bulkhead.

Thanks for looking

Thanks Eddie, got another 10 Phantoms in the stash, all will be built, but all will be in RAF or FAA markings

Jet Pipes now fitted, and as you can see she aint got J79's  :o  Now then, I know the Aux Intakes are missing from the rear & underside, but, Im not quite ready to start scratch building things like that just yet. You can also see yet more wood added to fill gaps, these Lolly Sticks are great   and a bit of homemade Gloop added which by tonight will be nicely sanded down  :banghead:

Wow!  Shoe horning the Spey parts into the back end of the Italeri kit caught me by surprise.  Had no idea you were going to that and now I understand why there was a need for some lolly sticks in the work up to this point.  You are certainly taking on a difficult task and so far it is looking pretty darn good.

Looking forward to your next installment of work in progress images.

Thanks Jeffry,

I was keeping the Speys as a surprise, I had them left over from my last FGR2 which I used Resin Jet Pipes. Getting them was not easy, had to glue the fuselage together, then force the Speys in until she cracked at the seam, took them out, painted them, put them back, then cut the lolly sticks to shape and fitted them in. Plasticard or filler just wasnt an option as they wouldnt have been strong enough to hold it all. For a complete pig of a kit its coming along nicely

Nice one ! Spey Phantoms are just so sexy......

Is that Italeri kit the same one that was released in the Testors box ? All flimsy, especially the landing gear ?

I'm really impressed with your work, Bex! Your detailing on the 'pit is very impressive. Even more interesting to me is your use of such diverse materials as popcicle and lollipop sticks. While I've used toothpicks as struts on biplanes, I never considered anything but styrene when modifying structural components of a project. Your technique has opened up a lot of new possibilities for me.

What brand of resin provided you with a set of Spey cans?  I have been looking for some extra Spey parts for an F-8 Crusader.  Wanted to see how the Spey would look stuffed inside of the F-8.  Most of my searching here has come up with nothing other than the option to purchase a Hasegawa Spey powered Phantom kit which I was really trying to avoid. :(  Of course some of those resin companies charge as much for the parts as it would cost for a complete model kit so it is a viscous circle.

Quote from: bexwh773 on July 04, 2008, 04:28:04 AMI aquired these sticks from a coffee shop and have a few   I'll be interested so how you use them yourself
I went so far as to purchase a couple of boxes from the local coffee barista for the purpose of passing the sticks off as lumber in the back of a 1/35th scale cargo truck.  The better finished sticks look very much like construction grade lumber such as what you would see being used for military style construction projects.  You know, things like Bailey Bridge bearing surfaces, bunkers, etc.  The box of sticks provides you with a lot of lumber in 1/35th scale :)  I also liberated by five-finger discount from another source a poorer quality stick that is very rough in finish and very coarse in appearance, almost like unfinished lumber that has been warped by moisture if left to the elements.  This of course gives you many other choices on how to use this stuff in scale and using it to fill in the gaps on a Phantom with an expanding rear end is just another solution.

Jeffry, I used Airies Resin Spey Jet Pipes, I'll dig some photos out of my last Phantom for you and chuck em in here
Right then, been a few days since the last update, heres a phew photos of me Phantastic Phantom :wicked:  The paint work still needs a bit of tweeking to get the hand slippages out but still looking good. The port side of the nose does need a rework as I put the grey in the wrong place, so Ive added a bit extra green, once thats dry I can then get the grey back where it should be.

Thanks Damian, thats the plan and arrangements for a show next year are being planned   For those that wont have seen what Im upto will first of all see a 31 Sqn RAF Phantom, but 31 Sqn did have Phantoms from 1971 - 1976, FG1's & FGR2's BUT NOT RF-4C, so Im hoping this ones gonna catch out the Rivet Counters  :o

Small update then, under wing fuel tanks and EMI Pod are now painted, Ive also had to make my own Sidewinder rails, yet more wood on the Phantom   Photos of those once Ive finished painting them. Tail area & Undercarriage all done now, Ive got plenty of decals to get her going while I wait for the Squadron Markings via Royal Snail   Then the final bit will be the bang seats, canopy and the rest of the Etch that goes with them  :o

Thanks for looking

Wow on the Phantom and on Lou's Airbus and on your place while we're on the subject of wow.  You can tell from the pics of whichever room that is that you are both having a blast at your hobby endeavors.  And you two are SW fans in addition to being modellers?
Will you adopt me?  Of course, STS is my brother so he'd be part of the package.  We'll bring our own modelling supplies and SW toys....

I've always wondered why the RAF didn't buy F-4E's when they bought up those few S's just after the Falklands, I'd of thought the gun in place would have been a bonus for down there.

Sorry Bex I didn't mean to offend  ;D I though profanity was ok if you were only quoting someone else..... like on the news ;D
Anyway I have a big stack of those "things that shall not be named" their good for leveling tables with odd legs and fire starters while camping

Bex,

Have you considered adding the Sky Shadow ECM Pod and the BOZ dispenser to your Phantom?  These could be mounted on the outboard wing pylons and it would make your Phantom more uniquely "British" :)

I am sure there are some members here on WHIF or over at BM that would be happy to assist you with obtaining a couple of each.  After all, what else is that Airfix Tornado kit good for but donating parts to other projects :)

Put out a request in the swap shop forum here and on BM and someone should step up with the parts.  If it were not for the hideous postage involved, I would consider sending you a set of my own.

Another small update then, seats finished & fitted into the office, and after some research she now has the serial of XT988. I had hoped to use a legit Phantom XT serial, but with the numbers I had available, 988 was the only option for me, so the underside decalling is now complete and varnished, just the starboard upper wing & fuselage to finish now. If anyone has any 1974, 31 Squadron markings lying around, I have other Phantom decals in 48th that Im willing to swap, as Im getting desperate now  :banghead:
Thanks for looking

Your Phantom is looking very sharp Bex! Love that R.A.F. scheme. Definitely one of the best looking ones around.

I can't wait for final roll-out!

Thanks Brian, comments like that mean alot and is much appreciated   To be honest, I think this is probably my best Phantom so far, and is my first What If Phantom and wont be my last either   My main problem is I grew up seeing green & grey Phantoms blasting skywards and I dont like grey jets but just wait and see what I do with an F4-E

Thanks again

I agree with Bdb, it does look very sharp   There's something about it which I can't quite put my finger on but I keep going back to look at it again and again.

Final update before finish photos Gang, starboard wing & fuselage now decalled, underside of fuselage given a coat of Promodeller Dark Wash (Aka Sir Phil of Flory's Mucky Stuff). All thats left is touch up job on tyres, Squadron Markings to be applied to nose & tail and once these arrive in the post, the rescue & cockpit decals can be applied and varnished over, with a final dose of Sir Phils Mucky Stuff. So there we go, the back story is stashed away in Bexys Braincell and will be added to the final photos, and thats about it for tonight Gang.
Thanks for looking

Thanks for looking
