Title: ARC Deco Mstang
Post by: sotoolslinger on June 22, 2008, 11:34:20 AM
Lt.Colonel Anton Palfi sat in his office in Ketch on the Black Sea and continued to be pissed. Not the drunk kind either that would have been pleasant. He stared at the two huge mounds of paperwork on his desk and wished that his coffee was Irish. It wasn't enough that he had to deal with all the material and supplies coming in to build the Northrop American shadow factory but now the CO of the airbase had tasked him with dealing with all the Germans that kept showing up at this supposed secret project. He would have even considered adding the disgusting potato booze the Russians were so fond of. His being very upset was interupted by his XO , Alun Beard bursting into his office, snapping to attention and saying nervously "Sir, sorry to interupt sir, but sir, there is a German civilian here you need to see sir."  This did not in any way improve Anton Palfi's mood. "Alun, he said , first we are only processing German military personnel and second I told you to do the interviewing." " Now calm down, stand at ease and tell me why I need to see a civilian?" "Sir ,uh, sir this one is famous sir." The Lt. Colonel could not for the life of him think of a famous German that might show up at his factory ''Alun why don't you just tell me who he is?" and took a sip of coffee ,wishing for something stronger.''Sir he says his name is Willi Messerschmitt." Anton Palfi spit coffee all over his paperwork.

With the defection of Willi Messerschmitt to the Anti Nazi side the designers at Northrop American were given free rein to develop a new fighter aircraft. The North Ammerican team already had Edgar Schmued who had worked on Messerschmitts team in Germany. Northrop had been instrumental in assisting Holden NZ in developing the 16 cylinder inline engine but as yet no airframe had been developed for it . Messerschmitt had smuggled out of Germany quite a bit of advanced research into wing shapes and airframes. There was much bickering between the US and Russia over what the plane was supposed to be . The Americans wanted a high flying interceptor/ escort craft while the Russians were demanding ground attack aircraft for their planned invasion of German held territory. The engineers came up with an excellent compromise which really wasn't .

The airframe developed was a sleek cranked wing design that made full use of the free breathing 1850 horsepower Holdens power. The use of dual counter rotating props eliminated torque steer problems and the 2 stage 2 speed turbo supercharger gave the aircraft excellent altitude capabilities

The cranked wing  gave  good low speed , low altitude characteristics , and allowed pilots to land at a mere 72 mph.

With it's integrated ,engine mounted ,30 mm high velocity cannon it was devastating in the ground attack role
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi253.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh50%2Fsotoolslinger%2Fskyrocket%2FMstang%2FIMG_0793.jpg&hash=a8ad4314c811afd0e7d80e07f25e4518ebe16f86)
The aircraft also had 2 1" Cannon and 4 .60 bore machine guns which gave superior firepower in a dogfight and were terrifying to Axis bomber crews.

To further enhance it's ground attack capabilities it was equipped with hardpoints for HVAR ,bombs and cannon pods.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi253.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh50%2Fsotoolslinger%2Fskyrocket%2FMstang%2FIMG_0799.jpg&hash=bce2ce1cea3fa9a930b3fcfeb55143532a94a281)
The aircraft ,officially called the P-78 Charger had a unique twin V tail arrangement with active ventral strakes and with its cranked wing design this gave is awesome manuverability
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi253.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh50%2Fsotoolslinger%2Fskyrocket%2FMstang%2FIMG_0797.jpg&hash=e5163a9661afdef15d59ecd2b9c1761ab4fe63ce)
The name Charger was a point of some debate. The Luftstreitskrafte Freies Deutchland  insisted that it looked like a Falcon and could not understand why the Americans would insist on naming it after a horse. They wanted it called the Falke.

A ground crewman once made the comment that it looked like and airplane after a weekend Bender and the nickname stuck.

What the?  How'd you...?!  But....?!  What did you do?  Did you do that twitch you nose thing and it was magically done, just like that?

Man, this is wicked cool and you are way ahead of your time.  Does this mean there's no longer any point in me attempting my own entry now?

Mr. Toolslinger sir, your designs have both awed and amazed since you joined our happy little brotherhood not so long ago, but this creation of yours has to be the best yet!!! It is truely awsome looking with a grace and lethality that has to be seen to be believed. You have superior design and modelling skills and I salute you!!!
Bloody well done mate.

Well dang, thanks Lancer. ;D  I've said it before but it bears repeating, I would not be doing this kind of creative modeling if it wasn't for the inspiration I get from all the folks on this site. I love this place and all the excellent creativity here

I look at this & think; BWWWRRRRRMMMM!  It's just the type of machine you should be holding in your hand, running around the living room with, brings back some childhood feelings!  I don't mean that in any derogatory sense, it invokes something I think models should be & that all eight year olds know, that they should be fun.  And this build has that in buckets!

That requires a picture! ;D And such sympathetic figures in your backstory! Love the aircraft and I am very proud that you choose my profile to paint it after.

I think I was one of the guilty parties. After seeing that picture... at least paint on a shirt! Remember - no shoes, no shirt, no service!

The most strange thing happenned, I showed your last photo to my wife and told her that's how I wanna be when I grow up. She told me then she wouldn't let me grow up. I don't know what she meant, and the look in her eyes, Noooooooo!!!

Great model, and your backstory is simply genius!!

Hey STS, having seen that last photo, Ms Hitler (my better half) wants your phone number!!   :o

Say, is that a studio scale TIE in the background or are you just happy to see me?

The Mouse That Roared

I effin wish that was the studio scale Tie. It's the old (I think MECO) toy made to go with the action figures. I stupidly never got a original Tie fighter model and the FineMolds is just freakin tiny.I have one but I will probably never build it as it is just too small to deal with .You want it JHM ?

Oh yeah Screaming Vermin that should be a good hookup as Mrs. Hitler and I both have German last names. I mean how did a proper German lady end up with someone named Mouse..... or is that anglisized from Maus?  ;D ;D ;D
