Title: M4A3(W)75mm High Velocity 1/48
Post by: General Zod on April 19, 2008, 08:46:37 AM
October 1943-Italy
The Allies captured some German Panthers and Tigers They did a test of the guns to see how much armor the main guns would go through The Panther's 75mm was better than the Tiger's shorter 88mm The American Army decided to arm the newer M4A3 Sherman with the Panther 75mm and they went into service at the landings in France in June of 1944

Hobby Boss 1/48 kit with the Panther barrel and Panzer IV metal gun and muzzle brake from Fine Molds I sawed the sleeve on the Sherman mantlet off,and glued on a plastic 7/16 inch tube so the Panther gun would fit in I decided to use the Panzer IV 75mm muzzle brake as it resembles the U.S. 76mm muzzle brake

I may put marking for Thunderbolt, which was Col.Abrams tanks used during the war He was commander of the 37th tank battalion,4th armored division

Nice to see someone actually putting a useful gun and a tommy cooker/ronson/death trap. Other than the 17pdr of course.

I thought about doing a U.S. Army 17lbr,but that'd be too easy

Chad, that long barrel really looks good mounted in the standard Sherman turret.  In real life, the French adapted that weapon for use on the AMX-13 and Israel used it on the M50 Isherman so you are not too far off from a real weapon system.

Not entirely a fair comment, that. The standard 75mm M3 was very, very good at killing infantry. The HE shell was very effective, and anti-personnel performance was valued more than the anti-armour role - this was meant to be left to the tank destroyers. Tanks were supposed to kill infantry, not other tanks. :)

Cool project, and the 75mm looks really good in the Sherman turret!
