Chaps,
I need a name for a Maritime Strike/Recon aircraft.
RAF....current/future.
The numbering will be..."NAME" MRS.1
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.
A bird?
A sea creature?
A mythical creature?
A god?
I've used "Kraken" for my RN/RAF F-35s.
Thanks
I've always thought Mythology is a great untapped source of names....what nationality is it for Terry?
I agree, the mythology route is very untapped and a great route to go.
Mix a mythological sea creature & the fact that RAF martime recce birds tend to be based in Scotland, how about Nessie MRS.1??? :P
Leviathan?
Hydra?
Manta?
Stingray?
Narwhal?
What'll it look like? Mossie's suggestions are all really good but they conjure up very specific images when applied to aircraft.
Albatross?
Sea Gull II?
Penguin!
Pelican
Cormorant
Seagull ?
Marlin ?
Swordfish ?
Shark ?
Boobie ? ;)
Poseidon ?
Kraaken ?
Mermaid ?
Siren ?
Ian
Rad-
Are we looking at maritime strike/recon in the context of a Bucc or Tornado loaded with Sea Eagle, or as a Nimrod/Orion type?
RAF in the context of the Buccaneer, etc..
Some great suggestions so far, chaps.
The Marlin MRS.1 sounds a good one.......unless there's another that takes my fancy and anything's possible!
Like others, I'm notorious for changing my mind!
Good idea, Lee.
I've not thought of a "maker" so the field is open:
Short Stingray?
Martin Manta?
Seabirds,
Cormorant?
Petrel/Storm-petrel?
Auk?
Tern?
Shag??? :P Short Shag?????
Nosferatu? ;)
Eddie
I like Petrel. Has a distinctive ring to it.
Stormy Petrel on a stick?
Albatross!!

Bristol Boobie......
.....I know, I know, Coat time, right ?
Ian
If you wantto go with mythology then:
Poseidon the Greek sea god
Trition, son of Poseidon and messenger of the deep are options.
QuoteTrition, son of Poseidon and messenger of the deep are options.
I forgot to add what Tritons message would be:
Kiss your @rse goodbye! :D
Some great ideas...
Ian, the Bristol Booby was a British "deveopment" of the P-26, with squared off wingtips and other small differences. Only 12 were built, and these served until 1943 as a "defence flight" for an airbase in Cornwall. At the end of their service, they were sadly bulldozed and buried. The colour schemes were numerous, and the final one was all-white with a long yellow propeller hub and grey-ish "spats".
Nosferatu is an ideal name for a night fighter, and it must be remembered that the Very Short Sunderlands of the Irish Air Corps were operated by the Vampires of the Nosferatu Flight.
Blackburn Blackbeard MRS.1 might be an idea?
I could include Pirate artwork too??
Yarrr, I be liking Blackbeard! :ar: Avast, Pirate be a name the scurvy Royal Navy be liking for their Buccaneer & other swashbuckling birdies, arrr.
Yarrrr!!!
:ar: :ar: :ar:
Erm, is there nothing from RHS that tickles your fancy for an aircraft's name (beyond the LeerJet you've already done)? Either for this bird or another.
I've just opened a Pandora's Box now, haven't I?
:dum:
"Fairey FrankN'Furter Mk.5"????
Martin Magenta?
I believe that Squadron Leader Hamish "Dorothy" MacTavvitt , who used to fly with 420 Sqn "The flying Virgins" based in Inverness, designed a new G-suit based on stockings and suspenders....he flew wearing full Highland dress (ie a kilt)

Virgins? In Inverness?
Now
that's funny!

Keeping it in the British Isles, if you're going for sea god names, how about
Manannán (Irish god of sea and storms)?
Manannan sounds cool.
I like it.
Especially if the aircraft is built by an Irish/Scottish Celtic consortium?? B)
I was thinking along similar lines with Norse mythology. I pictured this aircraft streaking across an churning, ice-cold North Sea at wavetop level loaded with missiles. That conjured up Viking imagery for me, so I found Aegir the Norse god of the sea, comparable to Poseidon or Neptune.

Hmm, that would make a great name for a Swedish aircraft......Saab Aegir for example.
Scylla
Charibdis
Scylla for the plane Charibdis for the weapons system. You know, "being between Scylla and Charibdis" is not a pleasant spot. B)
Anything called Scylla would be painted black.....
you know....
Scylla Black :dum: :dum: :dum:
Marina (especially if your aircraft is built by British Leyland).
Barracuda (would suit a maritime strike TSR.2 better).

Oh yes Marina would be excellent, you could even have it with a vinyl roof extending from the cockpit to the tail !
Ian
Adding a vinyl roof could be good....... 8)
