Title: Jasdf Hawk 100
Post by: nev on August 25, 2007, 12:42:44 AM
So, Hawk #2 for the JASDF build.  Got the cockpit all painted up last night - won't win any awards, but good enough government use ;)

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FJASDF%2520Hawks%2FIP11-1.jpg&hash=ac0e5b3dc2442563c8695c926afb1bd530ec0a06)

And, because I'm stupid, I've also decided to increase the degree of difficulty by dropping the flaps, which requires some plastic surgery  :dum:  Also note wingtips sawn off for the Hawk 100 wingtip AAMs  B)

Like a complete muppet, I lost one of my wing fences to the carpet monster, so I scratched a new one using some cut-away piece of wing and the surviving wing fence as a template.  Didn't turn out too bad in the end

Main construction complete - regretting my decision to drop the flaps.  Spent most of last night trying to get that assembly sorted out (not helped by Airfix's wrong instructions and parts that don't fit  :banghead: )

Need to get all the PSR done tonight if I'm to stay on schedule...

Hehe, knew you'd like them Todd after your little line up of Canadian ones (I aim to do something similar for Japan).

Anyway, PSR is now complete and painting can begin - using my brand new Iwata airbrush.......

So I applied a coat of light grey....no, honest, I did!

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FJASDF%2520Hawks%2FIP19.jpg&hash=35df5bc6780d52f066c0d22ca7c95d07633de793)

Here endeth the first lesson in using my airbrush - don't overthin the paint  :banghead:

Ah well, try again tonight.....

Looking good Nev!  I love Hawks and came close to picking that kit for my build.

Very ambitious doing the flaps on a one-weeker!

You know when you can feel a project slipping away from you, and the model in front of you no longer looks like how it did in your head?  I'm reaching that point right now :(

Torn between which scheme to go for.  Neither look right to me.

(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi182.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx236%2FRedwingNev%2FJASDF%2520Hawks%2FIP22.jpg&hash=25da74b7aa3daefe1837a76aa21801349b563aaa)

Apologies for the white-out effect on the pics, not sure what happened there.  The camo schemes are still a bit rough right now as I try to decide which to do.  To be honest I'm tempted to take a rattle can to the model and be done with it.  I've only got 2 evenings left to finish her.  Maybe choosing a model with dodgy fit, 4 colour camo and then dropping the flaps was a bad idea?  I swear, next year I'm doing a 1/72 tank!

I swear that would look awesome in swedish or finnish or norwegian markings!

Wow...dont be so down Nev.  I think the first scheme looks great.  I'd say you're well on the way to a stunner.

Well, I'm a lot happier with how it looks now - photos are still a bit dodgy, I think its the early morning light in the living room.

I actually would have got this almost finished last night but I was "asked" to come to bed for some "cuddles"

Sadly, "cuddles" was not a euphemism, but a literal expression  :banghead:  :banghead:

So here she is, 90% done.  Going to try and finish her off this morning before I go to work.

Decaling finished! Just final touches, undercarriage and flat coat to go now.  Ignore the streaky paint finish, I only put one coat of Klear/Future on to save time.

Much happier with how she is looking now.

Mitsubishi T-4B Iruka, 501 Hikotai, JASDF

Licence built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Hawk is in service with the JASDF as a basic jet trainer, Lead In Fast jet Trainer, and advanced weapons trainer.  Every front line fast jet squadron also has two each for use as hacks - roles include helping in type conversion, maintaining fast jet currency for pilots on ground tours, incentive rides, target towing and adversary/aggressor missions.

Known as the Iruka (Dolphin) in Japanese service, the versatile Hawk has proved popular, and with the additional orders placed for the T-4B (based upon the Hawk 100), total production in Japan currently stands at 242 airframes.

The model is actually only 95% complete - I still need to do a bit of weathering, a few details and then a flat coat (should get rid of streaky paint finish caused by only 1 application of Klear/Future).  Thanks go to Evan for the Woody Woodpecker decals, and Allan for the help with the Japanese language
