I just got done recently with a Tomcat and Blue Angel Hornet and needed a little what if fix. I'm doing this S.H. in Wolfpack colors in protest of the USN decommissionong VF-1. It'll be loaded with what I call the "Last Resort" package. Lots of fuel, modified ECM pod and one special weapon. It will be all gray with black highlights to match the decals. :)

Sierra Hotel Super Bug, Eddie. Not a surprise that they're decommissioning 'Wolfpack', they've already nailed 'Jolly Rogers' and gave their name to VF-103. All in the way of 'downsizing' I'm sure by some pen-pusher who's decided the Navy is too big... again!
Umm... hasn't it been nearly fifteen years since VF-1 got the axe? It's definitely not news, at any rate...
Nice bug, though. I imagine the loadout is the last resort of the squadron CO in convincing Congress not to disband them? Or maybe it's a disgruntled former VF-1 pilot who's out to "avenge" the squadron. ;)
One question - which kit is this? I can't tell from the images...
SP
oh yes....wolfik likes wolfpack :)
decom for wolfpack? makes you wonder where the sense of heritage went really, doesn't it?

It's the Revell F/A-18F. Considering I've built the Echo model, it's been pretty easy and the fit is not too bad either. Much better than the A or C from RoG.
Yea, no sense of history! The Wolfpack was decommed a long time ago, but I still remember them. ;) B)

Looks like it's coming along nicely Eddie, and that bomb is...well, Da Bomb!
I hope you pilots are using lots of sunscreen!
It appears that you have found a use for that B43 nuclear bomb shape that I sent to you along with the other bits and pieces.
She gonna be equipped with a lead bathtub and shower curtains??? ;)
Lots of famous squadrons have gone away-many in the F-14 and A-6 communities never got to transition: VF-33 (Starfighters), VF-142 (Ghostriders), VA-35 (Black Panthers)-the oldest attack squadron in the Navy, going back to VB-3 before WW II, VA-196 (Main Battery)-seen in Flight of the Intruder with Danny Glover, VA-165 (Boomers), VA-85 (Black Falcons), etc. Only one A-6 squadron made the transition from the A-6 to the Super Bug, and that was -115. Had VF-191 and VF-194 been reactivated (they were briefly active from '86 to '88 with the F-14A) as F-14D squadrons as planned in the early '90s, it's possible they would still be around as VFA with the E or F version of the Super Bug. -191 was the Red Lightnings, while -194 was the Red Diamonds ( I did my Hasegawa 1/72 F-14A as Lightning 107 from -191).
Nice.
Don't talk about downsizing....the RAF/RN know all about that.
Sopwith Camels are our next issue!!
How about Sopwith Camels in the grey contemporary scheme?
I've one to do Aussie anyway  Found the decals too on the Hawk 100.

Quote-191 was the Red Lightnings, while -194 was the Red Diamonds
Matt I hate to tell you this, but -191 was Satan's Kittens (same sqn that the Blues flew with in Korea)), while originally -194 was the HellFires, but were renamed the Red Lightnings befor Decommed. Both sqns werent around long enough for the definative tail art to show up.
IIRC VF-1 (along with VF-111 and 2 othe Sqns that I dont remember) were due to stand up as D sqns, but then got nixed.

This should look good.
Any subject matter dealing with Bugs and Super Bugs rock in my opinion!
Can't wait to see the finished product. If it as good as your other Angels Bug it should be a winner.

Sidenote: RAAF could lose an historic sqn in the form of Amberley based 6SQN between the SH and forthcoming JSF. Sadly, it is just a sign of the times.

The reason I'm using these decals on this bird is that I want to wait and use CAG colors on my other Tomcat. I want both of mine in CAG colors to represent the 2 F-14 squadrons on the Ranger. Here is my VF-1 bird I finished not too long ago.
(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv669%2Fscurrfy%2FF-14%2520Tomcats%2FHPIM0798.jpg&hash=741405b63fcff0fcc2534d1f7f2c150d9d7ecf7f)
Here's where I am thus far. I'm doing a bit of weathering and sometimes I get stains where I don't want them. I use a little bitty ball of 0000 fine steel wool and scrub the spots away. On USN birds, it gives a bit of the corrosion control paint pattern. This time, I'm going to try and accent the patterns with pastels to bring it out a bit more(these seem to disappear under the flat coat) Here's to trying something new!

*chuckle* Well, with SC, myself, and, I believe, at least one other member in the DFW-Denton area, we could have quite an "All-Texas" get together some time.
Retro, given the "normal" behavior of the Texas Legislature and Texas government, can you *really* say there's much of a level of sanity here now? Or is such behavior (which has been documented for years) just a side-effect of being in Austin?
OT, But whats up w/Austin anyway?
Shas B)
QuoteOT, But whats up w/Austin anyway?
*shrug* I've no idea, but Texas government has been "colorful" for years (back in the 1960's, as a gag to prove how little his fellow legislators read things, one legislator got passed a resolution commending the Boston Strangler for his efforts in population control) and has produced some *very* colorful characters. I blame it on the water there, myself. ;)
Wow, Eddie: that corrosion-paint weathering technique looks soooo much better than anything I've ever been able to pull off.
But, then again, you got to see the real thing up close for years!

Precision guidance allows you to get the desired results with a lower-yield weapon and reduce "collateral damage".

There was an attempt by the Air Force to develop a precision guided version of the B61 back in the day... The project name was TIGER and it involved a B61 physics package mated to the rocket motor from the AIR-2 Genie air to air rocket. This in turn had a seeker head mated to the front of the weapon with a set of control surfaces to provide a limited means of manueverability to the weapon which was concieved to allow over-flight of the target at extremely high speed and subsequent release of the weapon which would then perform a "U-Turn" maneuver and guide itself to the target. This concept had merit in the way it was intended to allow the attacking aircraft to fly past the target or attack from an off set to avoid direct confrontation with the air defense network defending the target. It got to the test stage before it was cancelled and replaced by the T-SRAM which also ended up getting cancelled. If only the Air Force had been smart and ordered a tactical version of the AGM-69 with the radar seeker option and mated it to existing airframes such as the F-4 and F-15, life would have been good...
Wow that looks absolutely killer, Mr. miller! I love how those full-color U.S. insignia look against that Navy gray and those awesome squadron markings!

QuoteMy problem is the canopy rail doesn't want to touch in the center. How would y'all close that seam?
Eddie
Depends:
A. If the canopy and its rail are already glued in "closed" position, I'd stick with Microscale's "Micro Krystal Klear" that you can apply in place into the gap (without PSR) then paint once dry to close that gap...
or:
B. If the canopy and its rail are just dry-fitted in the "closed" position, I'd simply sandwich a very narrow coil of grey plasticine between the lower edge of the canopy rail and the cockpit's wall (just enough to seal it up when you squeeze the canopy/rail back down into the closed position).
With both these methods, you don't have to risk using CA glues or any form of PSR on the completed model.
P.S. Just realized how good your nose gear looks in that close-up: kudos, man.
Here it is, warts and all. That's not exactly the way I planned it, but I'm glad to accept this bird into my airwing of plastic whifs. :) Thank you all for the kind words during this build. It means a lot ot me. B)

Has an elegance and warlike looks.
Un gran aplauso

My compliments Eddie.
An excellent model of a nice aircraft.
Makes me almost want to go out and build one. Almost :P
Just caught up on this stupendous build
Chris
Apparently Maverick was accepted as an instructor at TOPGUN, so there was another pilot who became CAG of VFA-1...
Great Build!
Wow! It's been a awhile since I thought of this build. Seems like an eternity ago. Thanks for the compliment. I wish I could say I've got something on the bench, but my modeling mojo has a taken a haitus, so I'm just a spectator for now.
