Post by: Rafael on February 08, 2007, 11:36:02 AM
YES!!!!
The moderators/Admins have written in my member title the caption: Cardboard Yum!.

I Thank you very much, and to celebrate it, I started this Thread. B)
I also want to celebrate the arrival of young Matej, brother cardmodeler.
This one's for you too, pal!!!!  :D

Enjoy!

Rafa

First off in the parade are a couple X-32 I modeled when the X-32 was only an artistic impression:

WOW!!!

I falled in love with your JSF proposals, J-XX and Hummers. But X-32 rules them all!!

Also F-35 and F-3 are marvellous...

"Idontknowwhat" reminds me Lockheed AH-56 Cheyene.

Why, Of Course, and is too much fun to do!!!

The Hummers and almost all of them are cut and built largely from profiles. This are my only surviving cardmodels. But since I returned to modeling, I have integrated, Plastic, resin, plaster, cardboard, and other bits of junk in my builds.

The X-32 are ones of my favorites, too

My favorites are the chinese J-XX   and F-22 and F-32

Edit: that tiny eggbeater is nice, but needs rotors though

Cardboard Yum indeed!!!!!  I love the splinter F/A-22 & the Chinese J-XX especially, but all are good.  Rafa, I know some of the models are your own creation but do you get some from printed sources?
Title: Rafa's Double Celebration!

Hola Mossie!! Thank you!!
Yes. I have some preprinted, standard models. Mainly free Internet downloads. Lots and lots of them in the 'net. But I enjoy the most when I'm scratchbuilding. The dropship, movie stealth and the mustang are standard colored (though I print them in B/w) downloaded models.

Thank you for sharing

Rafa those are some truly amazing works of art you've created! I'm particularly impressed with your wonderful variety of camo schemes. I am very inspired by them!

This is also the first time I think I've ever seen an F-86 made from cardboard. I am just amazed and astounded at what you can do.

Definately Cardboard Yum!

Dang, Raf!  Those are some nice builds!

Too bad the actual tracked FCS doesn't look like your renditions.  They'd look less silly (that's about the only way I can describe the latest ones...).

Thanks Marko!!!
I really price them much, too. They were my first time developing a 3D model from profiles. They were easy to do because of the boxy shape, but the trick was in the front glacis, wich has a funny shape. The supporting interior structure is a rectangular box to wich the wheels (made from styrofoam) are glued. The Turrets are 1 piece of corrugated cardboard. They were cut longitudinally to insert the gun and its supporting rod into one of the sinuosities of the cardboard, achieving swivelling action.

Thanks for sharing,
Rafa

I actually tried to make a paper/cardboard model once, a B-58 Hustler I downloaded from somewhere but I lost nerves in the first five minutes. So, back to styrene, resin and photoetch for me.

I still have that Hustler stashed somewhere on my HDD, together with some Space shuttles and SMS Rhein, old German monitor...

Yeah, I tried a few printed ones when I was a kid, a SR-71 & a Chieftan Tank.  I managed both of them, but I wouldn't say I did a good job of either.  It's more intricate than I thought, getting curves can be a problem & using the right amount of glue to stick the thing together without turning the card to mush, then trying not to get glue on every surface other than the one your sticking.

There's good ones here & a ice variety, including a load of X-Planes, although you have to pay for these (but very little).  Might try one when I have some spare time.

Yes, They are difficult to make.
I really have a great admiration and respect not only to cardmodelers, of wich there are real masters who put my works to shame, but of the designers, who make the unfolding/folding act of creating a model ready for assembly.

I'm not one of those modelers. My approach is and has always been to analyze and do things the easier way possible (In a past life, I was a Systems Analyst for 20+ years), and if there is something I hate is to do things the hard way (at least for fun).

So I scratchbuild with cardboard (Cardboard, Yum!!!) because is cheap, comes from an abundant supply, and can be printed as much as you need it. The "secret" to my scratchbuilding is the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) approach, wich renders good results, if you're not trying to achieve superdetailed models. And it involves much study in the opposite way of designers. Take, for example the LAVs Gervasius liked so much. There is a Czheck model that is perfection embodied, but I don't have the time, nor the patience to do it, So I went and downloaded some profiles and dismembered them in pieces easy to glue together and, Voilá, there's your APC!!!

So much fun, I can't describe it!!

Thanks
Rafa

Standing in line at the local hobby store today, I glanced over and saw a rack of origami kits.

Got dizzy just thinking about them.

You card-modelers impress the heck out of me!

The UK Card Modellers always have a stand at the Milton Keynes show and I must admit to being tempted in the past - well this year I have taken the plunge and ordered a Russian pre-Dreadnaught warship. Should be fun
