some days ago there was a thread in Alternate history about a Sonic Cruiser Tanker (to supercruise with the F-22 :P ). I just ask how it would be difficult to create a sonic Cruiser by slautering an 1/144 airliner model (I think particularly about a 757). What do you think about that?
Slaughter away, but there wouldn't be much of a 757 left. Sort of like converting a P-51 into a 707. It could technically be done, but you have to define "convert" at some point.
Jack up valve stem on nose wheel, insert new airplane.
:)

You could use the minicraft B777-200 kit. It looks awefully alot like the fuselage on the sonic cruiser. You will need to make the nose more round. Perhaps some wings from a Concordski.

I think this one might be able to keep up. ;) :P This was a 1:200 727 and I added the tips of a 1:48 Mirage and 1:100 707 engines, modified for afterburner, of course. :)

A P-51 into a 707?
He's talking my language, boys: sweet styrene supplication!
Eddie: did you ever finish yours?
RotorheadTX: I certainly agree with you: your model deserves completion.
Way to go, guys!
Gentlemen, I'm certain that I speak for all of us when I say that these models must be completed and displayed as soon as possible. Please return to your workbenches and begin the final phase. We will not tolerate lame excuses like 'work' or 'family vacations', or even good excuses like 'funerals' or 'beer festivals'.
You have your instructions, carry on.
No beer festivals? Why you cold hearted, evil son of a... :D
Here's my mutant sonic cruiser-ish plane. It's still in this state as I haven't had the patience to sit down and do all the sanding the fuselage requires.

Thanks everybody! I made some plans about it. My aim is to use the wings, tails and engines of the original model. This would gave something like a canard 777... this would be roughly similar to the sonic cruiser but lack the delta wing.
Maybe this sound strange, but I intend to use (slick) cardboard to fill the gaps (the kind of cardboard you find on model boxes. It's easy to cut and model, and strong enough to resist paint, glue and loads of a model.)
This would be a difficult task, but I think this could be feasible. The most difficult thing woulb be... finding a 777 model in the desert were I live :(
This is not a picture from Picasso : it's the plan I made of the modifications needed between a 777 and a sonic Cruiser

With so many halfway completed models, we almost have a group build of futuristic airliners already. Anyone wanna get in on this one?

If I can found a 777 model I will use this thread as basis (photos of the model in progression)

If you buy the hasegawa 1/200 777-200, you will be able to use wings from a 1/144 concorde or concordski. Should fit in scale.
Thanks a lot B777LR!!! Well with such signature you must be an expert in 777 kits :P
Seriously i really want to do it and create a thread a bit like Simon R and its Avro Vengeance (albeit I certainly couldn't make such an impressive achievement).
There's some models in this thread that need some serious completin'
*puts on Tom Landry's hat*
I want you guys to work a little harder, or you'll be answering to Hank Scorpio himself!
Speaking of Scorpio, not seen him round here for a while ;)
I think you will be able to use the engines of the 1/200 777 kit as well. Add them above the wings, and yoiu wiill have a rough shape of part of the engine.
For the fuselage, just saw off the vertical stabilizor, and perhaps also make the setion arond the wing roots more round. Make the nose more round. Then the fuselage should be ready. Dont make the bottom part of the aft fuselage the top.
I found a precious document to help me : a 3-views of the sonic Cruiser (in an old french aviation magazine of march 2002). I must scan it!
I'm interested in using the wings of the model as part of the delta wing of the Sonic cruiser (don't know if it is possible because of the swept and length so may be brand new wings would be better). As soon as possible I try to found a 777 model and then start the sonic cruiser... stay tunned to this thread!!!

Wots the intakes of the Sonic Cruiser look like?
Apparently they were oval (this would be the most difficult part to make). I must scan this 3-view of the sonic Cruiser this week!!!
Archibald, that supersonic business jet is still very much alive. There currently are 2 aircraft, one made by suchoi/gulfstream, and the other bu tupolev. The Suchoi version is to be able of flying supercruise without making any supersonic boom, thus it can fly supersonice over land. The tupolev is just a plain old mini-concordsky, except i think its supercruise. If they are to become effecient, they cannot go past mach 2, but at lower speeds they should be quite economical.
No sonic boom? Good luck with that...
QuoteNo sonic boom? Good luck with that...
I think there is still a sonic boom, but due to the configuration of the aircraft it doesn't travel at much of a downward angle, but almost parallel to the flight path. By the time it does get near the ground its energy has pretty much dissipated.
Evan, I think we need your expertise here! ^_^
That SSBD modified F-5 looks like some sort of tropical reef fish. Now that'd be a good Whif color scheme....

Dassault had studied a SSBJ from march 1999 but the project died because of its engines: militaries engines had short lives, Boeing/Airbus engines were too bigs, new engines were too expensives... the project still wait its engine otherwise it is well define.
To quote Marvin the Martian"Where's my Earth shattering Ka-boom?"

Are you sure? Do you have details?

Hi folks,
Go here (http://www.aviationnow.com/shownews/05nbaa/pre01.htm) for some info on the SSBD project.

Greg
Well Dassault project is still in standby, for the moment... There's also Aerion SSBJ!!! Latest news about this one??
Geeze, I want one in blue and another in green... no blue again!
B777LR,
Thanks for that. I don't want to sound sceptical, but I will wait until there is a prototype role out of either of these new Russian SSBJs until I am convinced – I live in hope though. There have been many announcements of new projects coming out of Russia over the last 15 yrs and very few have materialised into anything beyond drawings.
Whilst on the topic of Russian SSBJ proposals here are a couple of Military conversions:
The late-1990s proposed conversion of Tu-22M-3 bombers into a business jet for 10-12 passengers:

I plan to create a what-if Aeroflot version of this later one someday.

Scann a four-years old magazine for a 3-view of the sonic Cruiser(https://www.whatifmodellers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.populus.ch%2Fpixdir%2Fmy%2F%2Fmyparalelworld%2FsonicCruiser.JPG&hash=84033b43b57131b98a833ab167eb457c91aa0a56)
