painting commenced with Duck Egg Green on the underside.
This is a weird camo for an underside: green like the sky? on which planet will this fly? ;) ;D

Au contraire mon ami.
Google Yak 38 and you will find pictures such as this...

Hm, you can't help wondering if the Soviet Navy had plans to use the Yak 38 in the ground attack mode while flying inverted. Then it'd look blue-ish from underneath and green-ish from above.

Better the pilot DIDN'T try VIFFing like that though...........

I was thinking sort of along the lines of what they're doing now a day with false canopies. If the thing is in a turn, at a distance, such a thing (or reversed paint scheme like here) could make an opponent mis-judge which way it is actually turning.     Who knows though... but... sounds like good-enough BS to me.  ;D

I don't entirely follow the reasoning on "why", but I suspect that was to match the color of the carrier deck.

Cheers,

AFAIK the green paint was a protective measure on the Yak-38 - not certain if against the heat from the jet efflux or against salt water corrosion.

Salt water is just as likely to get on the top sides as well.

Duck egg green looks good and that's what counts.  It now has 3/4 of a coat of Intermediate Blue* on the top and sides and they go well together.

*Vallejo Intermediate Blue which is unlike any other manufacturers in being very dark.  To me it looks like a mix of Navy Blue and Mid Grey.

Did you know dept.

If you google "Soviet Naval Aviation" most of the pictures that appear are builds by Dizzyfugu...

That's looking better by the minute.

What's with the bulge under the inboard trailing edge of the wing?

...and I am NOT working for Putin or the Illuminati!  ;)

BTW, I found Tamiya's "Field Blue" (XF-50) to be a good guesstimate for the upper side, because it is rather dull and has a petrol touch. For the undersides' green I have used Humbrol 114 (Russian Green), but it's OOP.

Thanks Dizz.  I've used Vallejo colours.  Both ones I rarely use but which to me seem to work well together.
I had no doubts about your allegiances.  We all know they are to The Ukraine... ;D

Kit - I wondered who would ask about that.  It's a flap stabilisation counter-lift weight anti flutter housing.
It has nothing to do with the wings being Bf 110 wings with the radiators removed (used on the BoB GB asymmetric Bf 110) but with the fairings that sit behind them being left in situ as they add some interest to the underside of the wing.
I assume these fairings (if the rads haven't been hacked off) are intended to block airflow from the radiators when the flaps are down.  Bf 109s also have them.

Ah, stupid of me, I should have realised. It's so obvious when you know.  ;D

I started scratchbuilding the mast today.  It's complicated by my desire for its folding mechanism to work.
I have also started on the fiddley bits.
