The B-17 Tail that Carried on Fighting
« on: April 07, 2021, 07:01:52 am »
The story of Sgt. Eugene P Moran, a tail gunner who carried on fighting despite the tail of his B-17 becoming separated and survived.

Some modelling ideas there.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That's amazing!  :o

Wasn't there a Lanc tail gunner who came down in his turret from 15000 ft or something and only broke his ankle as the turret landed in the snow? Amazing stories of the times.
Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Nicholas Alkemade.

IIRC he took a beating for sticking to his story as they thought the must be a spy, but when the Germans found his parachute still in the wreckage they had a healthy respect for him. He survived several close calls after the war too, I came across him in a book of mysteries when I was a youngster.

IIRC, I remember reading the Reader's Digest version when I was a kid (courtesy of my grandmother)

Another tale I remember was in Hugh 'Cocky' Dundas' autobiography.  A pilot in his squadron had taken fire: as he was evading his goggles fell in his lap.  When he got down there was a bullet hole in his canopy where his head had been, it had snapped the strap as it passed through.

I think I first read it in a friend's copy of Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World.

What an experience! And PO Pat Brophy had another lucky escape from a Lancaster. Sadly, PO Andrew Mynarski died of burns after trying to free his friend before jumping. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Mynarski

“And perfect JMN fodder.”

Not really, it’s been a well known story in regular modelling circles for decades.
