« on: June 12, 2009, 08:04:41 am »
title says it all, just something i was thinking of yesterday evening
the plan is to build a carrier version of a usually land based aircraft/helicopter.

some exsamples could be Navalised Typhoons, gripens, P-51's, F-104's,.....

seriously, why should the air forces have all the best toys  ;D
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Always liked the idea of a navalised Viggen myself. Wouldn't need much: a hook (unless the carrier's really big: that thing can STOP ), single-wheel main gear with beefier legs and folding outer wings (the tail folds already!).

Imagine it posed on a section of deck with a section of island behind it, but the deck and island are painted in Swedish Navy two-tone green splinter cammo and a notice on the island says BEWARE JET BLAST AND ROTORS in Swedish.....

So what are you waiting for Weaver? GO GO GO!!!

I like this idea.  I've got some Dragon 1/144 Tornadoes I was thinking of doing up in USN livery and ordnance.  A Tornado is Gull Gray over White with VF-84 markings   Thinking of doing a Fighter version and a Strike Fighter version.  VF-84 or VF-11 and VFA-131 should look good.

Weaver, I built a navalised Gripen a couple of years ago.

Would it have to be something that was never seriously considered for naval service?  I'd like to do another Sea Jaguar, this time in USMC service...this build might be a good opportunity for that...

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

Carriers, woo-hoo!

Let's see. Helos are rather easy to adapt to carrier use.
I've wanted to do a COD DC-9, but that was already proposed officially.

The question is, what would be a surprising yet plausible adaptation of a land-based plane to carrier service? I'll need to see what's available at the hobby shop.
In between jobs and homes.  New job starts soon, then search for new home, space for hobby room and display cases is non-negotiable.

One I've got on the bench right now is a navalized Supermarine Swift. Wings have been butchered for the fold, canopy separated, wheel wells hollowed out, still dreading scratching the pit.

Gnats and F-5As have been seriously proposed for carrier use (okay the latter was an early pre-F-5 study, but the idea was there). How about a G.91, or the Hawk 200 with T-45 Goshawk mods?

How about a Mirage F1 or MiG-23?

We know that the C-130 successfully operated from the Forrestal, problem on deck would be getting out of the way of everything else! But we could envision it in service, and maybe a Transall C-160 as well. A thought I had a few years ago was B-25s being upgraded with turbo-props and being used as CODs, don't know if the gear could take the landings though, they may need a lot of strengthening. F-105 might look cool in USN livery too.
