Title: Racing/Competition GB ideas (get a jump on your competitors)
Post by: joncarrfarrelly on September 22, 2018, 11:16:03 am
I know this is early, but I have some stuff I'd like to start sharing in anticipation of the
upcoming GB.

First off the Salt Shark, a new Bonneville/El Mirage land speed racer entered in
Class B Blown Gas Streamliner.

I've sketched some ideas i'm happy to share.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1873/29924661307_4100bf19ef_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MAkHfk)Racing Ideas (https://flic.kr/p/MAkHfk) by Fred Maillardet (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156376527@N06/), on Flickr
I sketched the racing tank before I matched parts up and it seems that a small 1/25 car body would be a better fit on a 1/48 tank chassis than a 1/32 car.

Does that have two wider track wheels at the front and two narrow track wheels at the back? It's difficult to see on their FB pages.

So, how many of you chaps have heard of 24 Hours of LeMons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_Hours_of_LeMons) (note spelling)?
There are already some very whiffish cars racing in said race - including an upside-down Camaro, a sideways Kombi, a helicopter, a caravan with a car inside, numerous backyard replica ferraris, and a Porsche 944 with the front clip of a Chevy S10...
And that's just in the US series - they've started up in Australia too!

Basically, you can race anything so long as it costs less than $500, excluding race safety equipment. Or, anything at all, so long as you bribe the judges enough or do enough penalty laps, or just turn it into something VERY silly to compensate for your performance. Many cars explode.

Fig 1: A typical LeMons race being raced (by racers)
Fig 2: A typical LeMons race car being raced by a typical LeMons racer (in this case Speedycop, who has a reputation for making the craziest machines)

EDIT: This link will take you to a list of some of the more insane things raced at LeMons. (http://www.roadkill.com/greatest-24-hours-lemons-cars-time/)

So, as you can see, this is:
A: The Sport of Champions!
B: Perfect for Whiffery!

LeMons racing looks like the most sensible thing since I tried my hand at moped racing.

PW's link (above) leads to a fascinating, if massively long, list.  I am only half way though but already fully inspired.

When you're done, check out their youtube channel - they have short recaps of every race weekend with a bunch of other cars shown - including one I've been having trouble finding pics of elsewhere, but which just seems so perfectly lemony... It's a Porsche 944 which had a bit of front end panel damage, so LeMons being LeMons they decided to replace the front panels with the front bodywork from a Chevy S-10 pickup truck. And somehow it looks right... There's also a Porsche 911 which got rear-ended, damaging the engine. New engine came from a VW Jetta or Passat or something that size. So they replaced the damaged rear end panels of the 911 with the pristine front panels of the VW...

Its beautiful, that's what it is.
Looks like a Bugatti grille.  Bodywork has a definite French vibe to it and is very Delahaye-esque.

Bearing in mind that in the context of this GB, as determined by Fred and meself,
any sort of competition is fair game it need not be limited to the types of
machines most usually build, howabout a Gundam Olympics or Decathlon?
Javelin and discus are easy as they fit the already exisiting military theme of the
genre, but how would you pose a Gundam for the long jump, or even more hilarious,
the hurdles?
Of course, for shot-put a Zaku is the only viable choice.  ;D

Then of course there are bio-mechanoid versions of familiar competitive sports,
like Syd Mead’s giant bio-mech race “horses”.

Nothing is too outré for this GB as long as it’s somehow competitive.

Personally, I have been thinking for a while of a Star Wars Pod Racer. Ep. 1 might have been hilarious, but at least there's a racing theme with potential in it.  ;)

While digging in The Loft for some cars and stuff to build my 'Racing Team' for this GB I've found all SORTS of lovely 1/24 stuff I'd forgotten I had.

You non-car guys probably won't have a clue what I'm on about but some will I'm sure.

One was an original IMC 'Little Red Wagon' kit, and it looks perfect too, amazing. I also found TWO Lotus 56 turbine car kits and a repro version of the same kit as well. And a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II!!!!  :o ;D ;)

I wonder if I should build the last one as an Altered with a big GMC blower sticking out through the bonnet and the exhausts poking out under the doors?  ;D

RR would probably sue me though.  ;D

Great minds etc.
I'm building one of them for a community build on another forum.  I've done too much to enter it in this GB but it's got a scratchbuilt DOHC cylinder head on the 12.7 litre Bugatti straight eight and huge blower on a sheet metal manifold.

Competitive Boring Object building?*

*Last year's International Boring Object competition (organised by the Bruge Boring Society) was uncharacteristically dramatic due to a schism between those who thought large grey cubes were more boring that small ones and those who thought the reverse. The large grey cube faction held that, since a grey cube was boring, a bigger grey cube was more boring. The counter-argument was that a smaller grey cube was less visually arresting and less of a nuisance than a large one, therefore making it the more boring size. The discussion went on for three days and was only resolved by the committee declaring both large and small grey cubes the joint runners-up, with the discussion itself taking first place.

I just had a brilliant idea. How about T6/SNJ/Harvards as World War II era racing aircraft for each branch. Think demo colors. USAAF: black and gold, USN: Blue Angel Blue and Yellow, USMC: red and yellow, USCG: royal blue with white and red racing stripes, RCAF: Snowbirds scheme, RCN: Yellow and ?, RAF: Red Arrows scheme, FAA: ?

Nice idea.  There have been several RN display teams,  the only two I know with special paint schedule are the Sharks which flew Gazelles in dayglow orange with a black fin and a shark motif, and the current team, the Black Cats who fly lynxes. The lead ship has lynx artwork over the standard grey paintjob.

Look what I found!  :o :o :o

While grovelling in The Loft looking for car engines for my JPS Racing Team I came across this tiny zip lock bag containing a MINUTE aircraft kit.

As you can see it's more flash than model mould, but you can just about make out the shape. It's a Midget Mustang, a 1948 designed single seater built for Goodyear Trophy pylon racing, and almost 500 of them have been built it's going to be pretty difficult finding a colour scheme that's a Whiff, but I'll have a go anyway.

Oh yes, it's just under 2" long, engine to rudder!

The kit's by Meikraft BTW, and the 'instructions' are a just a small sheet of paper that tells you what it is, a tiny build diagram, but no colour scheme drawings, no nothing.  ;D

Tank racing sounds an interesting sport.  Perhaps a military biathlon event as in  the winter Olympics  :-"Biathlon is a Winter Olympic Sport which combines cross country skiing with precision target shooting."   Race your competitors round a cross country course with tank target shooting on the way.

Cromwell, or Tank, Cruiser, Mk VIII, (A27M), was good for 40 mph  and could even leap across wide ditches according to Wikipedia        Cromwell was the fastest British tank to serve in the Second World War, with a top speed of 40 mph (64 km/h). This speed was extremely beneficial in both attack and defence, outmanoeuvring opponents. At least one case is known of vehicle commanders using the vehicle's fast speed to jump large gaps. In The Netherlands, a troop of three Cromwells was able to leap a 20 ft wide canal when surprised by enemy forces

Then there is the Scimitar/Scorpion / Sabre family to consider.

I've got several ideas, most won't work out because I can't get the bits.  Main ideas are something using a Swordfish and with possibly a L-39 or Alpha Jet, or a Dakar rally Supacat Jackal/Coyote.

The Christie-Cunningham LeMans Sportank (1962). The ultimate American sportank, designed by J. Walter Christie and financed by millionaire sportsman Briggs Cunningham, was winner of the 1962 French LeMans 24-hour no-holds-barred classic. Its low profile, heavy armament, and high speed allowed driver Cunningham himself to knock out most of the competition. To put it is his own words: "It was really gratifying to blast all those foreign bastards to hell. I guess I can go home now."

I've a fair few books which cover the Christie in some detail, but I've not seen that one before. Thanks Jon

So tank Long Jumping ? Mind you if I'd just been surprised by a Panther/Tiger/King Tiger I could probably jump 20ft or so  ;D

How about the aircraft fuselage mounted on regular ground chassis we see pics of occasionally? Painted up in racing colors instead of camo?

Already done in the Real World of LeMons racing

How about "unusual" entries...like a Lada?

Assuming it could catch them, or perhaps it would wait until "they" tried to lap it, the Beverley could swallow its rivals. ;)

Yes, just leave off the doors and fly directly in front of them as they try and pass. GULP!  ;D

It's 'Competition' too, so models need not be 'Racing' in nature too, which means I could build my Extra 300 kit in some Whiffy scheme perhaps...........  ;)

I've got a photo of my Grand Uncles using about 20 mules pulling an early monster size harvester which was taken in the early 20's IIRC. I'll hook it out and try to copy it.

Competitors one and all.
There are just over two days to go until we start The Competition.
Please begin making your way towards the start line in an orderly manner.
Those requiring scrutineering form a civilised queue and have your wallets ready.
