The thinking behind the Gannet is that under the British Isles Mutual Defence Act, the Royal Air Force is able to use Kinloss for the NATO long range maritime role (Nimrods, of course) linking up with. The Norwegians.

But a requirement for a higher intensity of available aircraft in the shorter range for fisheries protection, SAR, as well as anti-shipping and anti-submarine neccesatated the acquisition of second-hand Royal Navy and German Navy Gannets.

Of course, with the discovery of North Sea Oil around this time, the Gannets are likely to be retired in favour of the S-3 Viking......

The donor of the decals awaits!
