For my Racing GB "big job" I shall be taking a Revell London Taxi (which looks suspiciously like a reboxed Japanese kit) and building a dragster with it.

Hmmm, you could get a BIG engine in the back too............. ;)
-
Yes. If only there was somewhere I could get a resin ZF transaxle...
;D
-
Yes. If only there was somewhere I could get a resin ZF transaxle...
;D
There's a good chance that you're the ONLY person on who knows what a ZF transaxle looks like, so you could use any old lump of styrene or resin, greeble it up a bit, and then SAY it's a ZF transaxle........ ;D ;)
I know what a ZF gearbox looks like, in fact I've got one (RW), but not a transaxle BTW.
And I've got a Getrag transaxle too, but it's a flimsy looking thing, not suited to OODLES of bhp.....
-
It would look like this.
(https://assets.bigcartel.com/product_images/223035970/ZF_5spd_Transaxle_and_Universal_Engine_Adaptor_ClutchBellhousing_2019_1a.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&h=1000&w=1000)
https://www.clearlyscale.com/product/zf-transaxle-5speed-manual-universal-adaptor-clutch-housing-set
I'm going to have to buy one of these now.
-
We've only got your word for that Fred, you could have PhotoShopped that advert.......... ;) ;)
Actually it does look remarkably like my ZF gearbox, I wonder if they have a 'house style' to the ribbing etc.
-
I have begun this build by carrying out the traditional task which (in my mind anyway) marks a car kit as started - I have glued the engine halves together.
The engine in this case is a 392 Hemi taken from an AMT '53 Studebaker.
-
Ahah, Old School then?
-
Yep. Cubic inches and forced induction.
-
Are you going to chop the roof to lower it?
I have the same Revell kit, I started a Rat-Rod by deleting the rear passenger compartment and moving the front windscreen back to create a longer engine bay. I filled in the front door sills.
Thin tyres at the front and wide tyres at the back. I think I can drop the body but I lost my mojo on this build.
-
No. It's going to have a completely stock roof. I want it to look, at first glance, like an ordinary taxi.
I may move the rear wheel arches forwards A/FX style.
Today the engine gained it's sump, heads and valley cover.
-
A change in chassis choice. I had a rummage in my Hot Rod parts box and found a chassis I think is from an AMT Ala Kart. It's probably vaguely based on a late twenties Ford model T chassis. Perfect.
I've chopped it about a bit and built some engine mounts. As you can see i've got a fair bit of engine setback.

-
A fair bit? It's almost rear engined! :o
-
Fifties/Sixties dragster technology. Having more weight towards the rear gave extra traction on launch. The tyres of the day needed all the help they could get.
-
Indeed so.
The engine on my drag racing Imp was so far to the rear that it was almost outside the car. ;D
And the Mini drivers wondered why we ALWAYS out-dragged them at the start! ;) ;D
-
More chassis work done. 1/4 elliptic rear springs and coil-overs for the front.
I found a bag of MPC or Monogram funny car chassis parts which have proved usefull.
No pics as it doesn't look to different to the last one.
-
Scratchbuilding a straight tube front axle.
-
I fettled the wheels today. They are a resin set from www.thepartsbox.com
A mock up. Body propped on chassis.

Looking good Fred

Hehehe, a London Cab as driven by George Montgomery! ;D ;)

Thanks folks.

I have started work preparing the body shell and more small pieces of plastic have been attached to the chassis.

And I have found a Funny Car seat/safety capsule thingo to use.

Next up - scratchbuild some wheelie bars.
-
Began scratchbuilding wheelie bars today using some 1/72 aircraft nose wheels I pulled out of the parts box. No idea what they are off.
Also applied filler to the chassis rails and body.
-
Wheelie bars completed.
Chassis work is pretty much done.

-
Cor, those sprung wheelie bars look the business.
Did you scratch them or did they come from a kit somewhere?
-
Thanks Kit. They are scratched. Wheels are 1/72 aircraft nose wheels and the springs are the wire I use for 1/25 plug wires wound round the rod.
-
-
Body primed and undergoing PSR. Chassis likewise.
-
Baby steps. I have been building the interior panelling and have realised I need to have the engine fully built up to make sure it all fits.
So i've been working on the double blower induction set-up.
-
watches with interest.
It's a Special FX
-
A little more work on the drivers enclosure today plus progress on building the engine.
-
Engine.
Yes, it's got a Hemi.
Partially plumbed and not yet wired.

IRL a race car would have been required to have high pressure rubber or braided steel fuel lines but this is a Team Stoopid car and red plastic is good enough for them.
-
Oh YES Fred!
That's awesome, TWIN 6-71s as well! :o
-
That's the optional engine set up from the AMT '53 Studebaker Starliner kit. "Double Whammy" as the decals put it.
-
Ladeez an gennulmen <drum roll>the engine is in the chassis.
Now I can make progress with the interior.
-
Body is now painted.

Very neat
I particularly like the fact that it still has it's little "for hire" light bulge ;)
-

How much do you bet that Fred'll fit the taximeter too? ;D
The race driver would have to flip it on just before the Christmas Tree counts down. ;)
-
I hadn't thought of that Kit. Good idea.
I'll have to see if Revell include one...
-
If it was the older version you could carry the luggage alongside the driver. A spare can of nitro for instance..... ;D
-
Great paint job .
Will you be doing a drag moped for when drivers are learning all drag strips .
-
Thanks TC.
-
Now i've finished the FW-190 I can concentrate my effort on the Stoopid Taxi.
Today I detail painted parts of the chassis, attached pedals, assembled & attached PE six point harness and attached the drivers seat/firewall module to the chassis.
This has enabled me to sit the body on the chassis, set its attitude and think about how to make the hinge.

Normally it's the black cab driver who has the attitude not the cab
-
Maybe it's rubbed off through osmosis
-
"I 'ad that Don Garlits in my cab the other day. Bloody yanks coming over 'ere taking our jobs..."
My original hinge plan would not have worked so additional structure is being created for hinge 2.0.
Here is the almost completed interior. I had another go at embossing raised lines onto very thin styrene sheet. Not 100% successful but it'll look much worse if I try to remove it.

Hehehe, that would have been one INTERESTING trip!
Those seat belts in the cab are wonderful, where are they from please?

Eduard. They do six point (which these are) and four point pre printed PE harnesses. You used to have to be carefull bending them as the paint could flake off but they seem to have addressed that now and these went together without any problems other than the usual offering to the carpet gods.
I got them from BNA Modelworld here in Melbourne. You might be able to get them from Hiroboy.

Doh! :banghead:
I didn't know Eduard did 1/24 stuff, thanks.
I'll check out Hiroboy, annoyingly they're only 20 miles away from me but you can't visit their place to buy stuff.
-
I've also got some Japanese harnesses (Studio 27 or Crazy Modeller IIRC). They are paper or thin ribbon with PE hardware. The ribbon ones are OK but with the paper ones you cut them to width from coloured paper and the cut leaves a visible white edge.
-
So i've built a hinge for the body. Some minor shaving of bodyshell was required for clearance.
I'm now building a hinged stay which will support the lifted body.
-
Oooh, ooh, (Mr Peevley) it's getting close to being done.
Exhausts are built and painted (second attempt, first coat of paint bubbled for some reason) and cleared. Just need attaching.
Fuel tank is attached and just needs plumbing and a cap.
Parachute needs painting and it's mounting frame finishing off and the release cable and strap scratching up.
Should be finished in time for Valentines day.
Lucky we allowed an extension eh. ;)

That's BEYOND awesome Fred, it's truly AMAZING!
One like that would go down a storm at Santa Pod.
-
Thanks Kit. Glad you like it.
-
Cab ride from Hell (or Heaven, depending on how you look at it)!
-
Terrific work mate
-
To the pub in less than 10 seconds ! That looks awesome. Would defo be a crowd favourite for all the expats at the Nationals !
-
That's excellent!
-
Yeah! That's something completly different! I like that!
Good thing to see a hotrod enter his GB. Have, besides airplanes, a stash with cars, Vans etc. They're all to be built certainly not oob. Got to do one sooner rather than later.
David aka 63 cpe
-
Thanks folks.
Build a van Dave. I've got one to do later on in the year.
I had intended to build a competition Gundam for the GB but time defeated me. It was going to be playing (Ice) Hockey and be in Bruin's colours.
