I'm sure most of us have heard of the genesis of the U-2, but for those unfamiliar, the story goes like this: Kelly Johnson was approached to design a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, and started with the idea of putting looooong wings on an F-104 Starfighter. But what if it was the other way around? I have a U-2 fuselage and CF-100 wings left over from the CR-100 build, perhaps there's enough bits left to make a bash out of them. Hmmm...
-
Yeah, why not? If I ever nick the wings from my U-2 for something I'm definitely going to put some F-104 wings on it's fuselage...
-
Need to shorten the CF-100 wings a bit, but yeah, this looks good.

That looks like a U-1.5. ;D ;)
Actually it's pretty good, lots of potential there.
[What am I saying? :o He's not only fitting SHORTER wings, he's shortening THEM too!!!!]

Just need to sweep the dust off the floor, wait for white glue holding the weights to dry, and then I can join the two fuselage halves. Airfix seat has been replaced with a seat from the Hobbycraft U-2, ejection handles added with wire.

Dang, canopy won't quite sit down perfectly over the seat. Okay, a wee brushing of Humbrol thinner to loosen the glue, off it came, and I'll grind down the bottom. Glad I test-fitted before gluing the two fuselage halves.
-
Love the shape of this! Cant wait to see it done!
-
Doing something I've never done before - installing wheel wells. Helps that I already had a nosewheel bay that I originally made for the CR-100, before I decided to go with a similar arrangement as the U-2. The mains will be very similar to the F-104, so that shouldn't be too difficult, basically just a flat roof, divider, and doors.
-
Wingspan has been established, not as short as the real world version, but I like the way it looks. Not glued yet. And yes, the keyboard really is that dusty and dirty! ;D

Wheel wells under construction, along with filling surrounding gaps with scrap plastic that will be buried in putty.

Shorter wings! Heresy! Prepare the stake and light the torches!

As far as I am concerned, I love the new shape
Thanks!

Clean... I love it. This will look like a million bucks once transfers are on and it's all wrapped up!

Took ages to do this foil finish on the top of just one horizontal stabiliser. Never done this before, still low on the learning/swearing curve. Foil sections are laid at different angles to show textures of different panels.

Coming along slowly, panel by panel. Doesn't look great, but a lot better than I expected for my first try. Tip: Listen to The Sex Pistols, or similar, while doing this. It gives you a devil-may-care attitude that allows you to forge ahead with brutal lack of concern for a mistake. You can always learn how to correct one.

I'm going to have to remember that, too - see what you lot are doing for/to my lexicon/vocabulary?

Might be getting good at this. Decided on a metal finish after the intakes had been glued on, so how the hell do I get foil on the fuselage behind them? Eyeball it, cut a rectangle of foil, cut a V notch in it to get around fuselage attachment, test fit, adjust with sharp blade and curved scissors, test fit again, thank eyeballs for doing good work, then apply glue, wait until it's a little less tacky than normal, easier to adjust by sliding, then plop it in, adjust position, and burnish down. Came out pretty good on each side. Still some trimming and burnishing to do but the hard part is over with.
Musical accompaniment to stoke the 'screw it and forge ahead!' attitude is courtesy of a metal/goth playlist that someone put up. Cradle of Filth, Ghost, Type O Negative, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, a long list of throaty screamers. Includes the infamous uncensored video of COF performing From the Cradle of Enslave. Look that up at your peril.

Coming together!!! I also enjoy ear bleeding devil music.

Cut off the rounded U-2 nose, and replacing it with the pitot tube from the old Airfix Hawker P.1127, makes it look more Starfightery.

This is going to look awesome, ... perfect, ... brilliant.

That explains it. You are doing it the hard way.

Just out of interest (not that I'm planning to foil a NMF kit, but who knows...), what glue are you using? PVA glue, superglue, something else?

Obviously this one didn't get finished in time. First time doing metal foil, not as easy as I thought. But it will get done. Small areas and touch-ups will probably get done with a Molotow Chrome Pen. Already tried that in a couple of spots and it looks okay.
