Title: Adam Savage/Tested: cheap vacuum former review
Post by: Weaver on June 17, 2015, 12:39:07 pm
I'm going to add more Adam Savage videos to a common thread rather than posting them individually from now on: makes them easier to find.

This is a short vid about his modelmaking tool boxes that he made while at ILM. Unfortunately it doesn't go into a lot of detail since they're making the posters of the boxes available to "premium members" (i.e. ones who pay for extras). Still interesting though:

Run out of steam I think. Adam's been saying things about getting too old for it on his podcasts for a while now, and Jamie has always preferred building things to talking about them on camera.

Kari, Tori and Grant have been out of it since last year anyway. A decision was made to cut the show back to just Adam and Jamie in order to go into more depth about fewer myths. That MIGHT have lead to declining ratings which have resulted in the cancellation, although I don't know for sure. From the interviews, I get the impression that Jamie and Adam didn't make the decision to cancel the show, rather it was presented to them and they didn't fight it.

Kari and Tori are doing something else called Thrill Factor on US TV, but I don't know much about it.

Mythbusters without Kari is like a pencil without lead - pointless.

I had already heard that Jamie was not going to do the live shows after this year so that would have also been a deciding factor, but as people have been saying Jamie prefers to be behind the scenes rather than in front of the camera so it was really only a matter of time.

Adam and Norm build what-if snub-nosed versions of the Blade Runner Blaster from a garage kit: https://youtu.be/9XB4Be6TjHU

The end results are really nice, and while Adam's is, I think, the winner, I'd have been very happy to have produced Norm's myself. It's nice to see that Norm (who's basically a computer-guy) has been genuinely learning and developing his skills.

Title: Tested(ish) videos: Simone Giertz & Kari Byron
Post by: Weaver on December 05, 2018, 04:23:57 am
Neither Adam, nor Tested, nor model-making (although Adam's plunger does make an appearance...), just a treat for all the bereft Kari Byron fanboys, and also Simone Giertz who's smarter, cooler and tougher than she would have you believe  :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTNohfs2o70

Simone works with/for Tested some times. She became famous for making "sh1tty robots" (her terminology) a few years back, and now does that plus a wider range of science videos. And sometimes she blows up brains...

Not the usual sort of video: Adam's hurt himself in the shop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaGnyaR2B7s

He makes some good points here, which is why I'm posting it. He's hugely experienced, he's very safety conscious, but he still managed to nearly lose a finger because he relaxed and got careless AFTER he'd finished the job and was cleaning up.

If he can do it, you can do it to.

Learn.

Well you can't avoid working on it, but NEVER take it for granted. I had it drummed into me by two engineering uncles from when I was old enough to toddle into their workshops that lathes and pillar drills are ****ing lethal.

Got my last-but-two job because my predecessor created a vacancy by getting the arm of his puffer jacket, with his arm inside it, dragged through a steel-cutting chop-saw. Unlike regular chop-saws, those things are geared: if they're not stopping for steel, they sure as hell aren't stopping for mere flesh. He had four layers of stitches, starting at the bone and ending at his skin... :o

The classic one is that your brain tells you "I've switched it off now so it's safe, right?"

Nope.

You've still got 15lb of steel spinning at hundreds of RPM and it'll take anything up to 30 seconds to slow down and stop. It doesn't need electricity to break your bones, just momentum...

I have this vacuform machine - it works well; almost too well since it can be difficult to remove the original. I ddon't know if I would pick it up and swing the heating element aside - like Adam does - because it hets very hot.

The heated plastic can also deform/partially melt styrene masters if you're not careful. But for the price, it's an amazing little machine.
