Today (6th November) would have been set up day for SMW 20 at Telford.
It does feel a bit odd today, not standing in a freezing hall seeing everyone set up.
Seeing as I happen to be the UK what if? SIG leader who would normally be running our stand I have decided to run a virtual stand on here.

So starting today and running until Sunday evening (UK Time) this thread can serve as SMW20 virtual What if? SIG display stand.

The basic rules are as follows:
1. This is open to all comers who are members of the forum, regardless of your location within the solar system.
2. Any Model is eligible so long as it is a what if? or a Cancelled Project. It doesn't matter if it has been seen before on the forum or not.
3. The profile artists among us are also more than welcome to join in.
4. Please keep the text down to a short description of the model (or profile) save the thread for the images please. No multi page back story's. How ever, feel free to post a link to the relevant thread if you wish.
5. Don't spam the thread with hundreds of images, be reasonable and keep the numbers down to around four or five images per post.

And now over to you lot..............
I always hope for the best.

Ju53B-1 (based on a Ford Trimotor, using Airfix Hampden engines and a Ju52 fin/rudder); Fokker D.XXIIIM (Pegasus kit with Merlins fitted); Vickers Wellington (twin-Mercury - off an ancient Airfix Blenheim - development of the Wellesley); Fairey Falcon (twin-engined development of the Fairey Battle).



Tempest F.7 (Rolls-Royce Eagle-engined version); Irish Air Corps Saab J-29; de havilland Dolphin Schneider Trophy winner (Airfix dH88 with modified nose to carry a Rolls-Royce R engine, spinner from a Spitfire I); Focke-Wulf Ta193H-1 (high altitude version of the Flitzer based on the revell kit using Tornado wings)





Meteor F.8R Firestreak testbed based on the Matchbox Meatbox; a golden oldie (one of my earlier whifs) - de Havilland Viper, a mash-up of Matchbox Mystere IV, Hunter, Lightning and I think a Phantom.  Ah yes, the Mistletoe composite.  A concept the Germans stole and called 'Mistel'.  Allegedly.  Eagle-powered Hawker Sea Fury FB.20.



Another Revell Flitzer, masquerading as a Swiss Air Force Venom FB.4; Griffon-engined Beaufighter TF.11 (engine nacelles courtesy of Airfix Starter Kits paint pots); Armstrong-Whitworth Manta - love child of the PM Ho229 and Matchbox Meteor; the Gloster Mercury - where the old meet the new in powerplant terms - an Airfix Meteor and FROG Hornet mix.



More oldies, the first two drew me to the attention of the forum and the SIG, the last one won the Piston Perfection GB some years ago.  Here we have a Centaurus-engined Hawker Typhoon II; a Centaurus-engined Corsair V (my oldest surviving whif, built before I even know of the SIG).

Here we go then.



The Hawker Siddley Jet Provost T6. A special trainer for Vulcan pilots due to the difficulties found with flying deltas.




The EE Canberra F10, the RAF's main long range AAM platform in the 50s & 60s. Armed with 2 x Red Deans, 4 x Firestreaks and 2 x Genies.




The Chance Vought TF5U-2 Double Pancake turbo-prop trainer for the US Navy's F5U-2 pilots.




The largest model on the stand?  ;D The Boeing 777-900 'Demonstration Jet', which never actually flew, but which gained Boeing and the Star Alliance much publicity.




An Aeronavale Mirage F1P, the prime PR aircraft flown by the French Navy in the 80s and 90s.




My first ever Whiff model, an RAF Starfighter F3 armed with the usual 2 x Redtops, and with the dorsal ECM pod, and IFR probe carried by the F3s. Built in 1972...

Another half dozen later on.

I am so glad to see that one is still around, Kit.
That is so much from when we first met at an IPMS Sheffield meeting in the mid 1970's.
You had that and I had the Hasegawa F-104G done as the RCAF 439 Tiger meet entry. All hand painted as there were no transfer setys around for it then.
We got talking and you mentioned your tandem two seat Lightning.
I knew that I was not alone in the world.

Well Jim, seeing as you mentioned it......  ;D



Here IS the Lightning F8. Converted from a batch of F6s when the Tornado F2's radar proved to be a dummy, the F8s had a lengthened fuselage with an EWO in the back and new cambered outer wing, and carried 4 x Skyflashes and retained the twin 30 mm ADEN cannon of the F6 belly tank.

And while we're on the oldies.....



The Hawker/Convair Osprey F1, the FAA's first VTOL fighter, developed from the XFY-1 Pogo, but with much larger wings, a more powerful engine and a gun ranging radar in the spinner.




Another oldie, the Supermarine Twin-Spitfire F32. The F32 was basically two F22 joined in the classical twinning method, and were used as escorts in the FEAF for the RAF's Tiger Force Lancasters and Lincolns.




My first attempt at a TSR2 kit. Sadly I chose a Merlin one to kick off. :( But I twinned it with an Airfix RA-5C Vigilante's wings and tail and added a third engine. The Barracuda S3As operated from HMS Ark Royal during the Falklands Conflict and took part in the first Buenos Aires Raid which resulted in the Argentinian surrender after a few days.




Not really a Whiff, more a Project Cancelled. The Boeing 767-200DD, which was evaluated en route to building the 777. Yes, it really was......




The Yak-15Db, at attempt to produce a longer range fighter for the PVO Strany. Unfortunately the single prototype flew away after being abandoned by its test pilot after it failed to answer to the controls. It has never been found.....




A Martin Baker MB8 Marlin PR1 of  58 Sqdn. during the early Cold War period, where it was the last of the RAF's prop driven PR aircraft.

Maybe some more tomorrow.

Purely from the aspect of viewing some exceptional models, this virtual show is turning out better than the real thing!  No crowds, no expensive fast food concessions, no struggling to find accommodation, no rancid-smelling oafs jostling you but YES to a comfortable chair with a coffee beside you (or something stronger once the sun is over the yardarm) and.............thanks to the wonders of the interweb...........the chance to chat to the creators of this magnificent display.

The downside, of course, is that we don't get a chance to meet one another in the flesh, to browse the trade stands and goggle in amazement at Radish's sartorial elegance.

On balance, it could be a great deal worse.  Thanks to all involved!

I might even be able to produce a backstory to fit the circumstances;  what if Whiffworld was, in fact, a cunning plan by a certain government department to disseminate disinformation?  The story of Sir Rupert Baldrick, permanent under-secretary at the obfuscation department, awaits.

.....no driving, no car parking hassle, easier on the wallet.  The downside is less 'real time' banter - unless we have a Zoom meeting tomorrow??
