I'm just wondering if I can scratchbodge one with an Ashton fuselage and a new wing?

Apparently, there was a resin kit, but it's circulation was restricted and it's now sold out.  Looks like the type of thing that we should be interested in!

That rings bells. One of the Airliner SIG guys had one on the stand at Telford maybe 2-3 years ago. Darned if I can remember who it was now, but I'll ask about.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

There was by the IMRA, although they do re-pop it from the looks of it

That's a very interesting looking aircraft. The engine housings date it for me and in plan view it looks like something that should have come out of one of the Soviet design bureau for some reason ?

Possibly it reminds you of earlier Soviet stuff because they too were working with Derwent/Nene engines  and hanging things off wings was not yet the flavour of the month?

Execuform did an Avro Airliner in 1/72 scale. But Mike Herryll has since retired and I don't know what's happened to all the moulds.

I've been squawking about a Jetliner model for years. Now Hobbycraft has gone under there's little chance of seeing an injection molded one. So many whiffing possibilities.

According to the Wiki article, the C-102 was originally supposed to have two Avons and they were only replaced by four Derwents when RR advised that they couldn't get the Avon civil-certified in time. That'd make an interesting What-If: cobble together an Jetliner from an Ashton with a different nose (Tudor? Convair..something?) and two engine pods from something like a Vautour, a Caravelle or a B-47.

Only trouble with the Friendship is that has a fattened teardrop shape to the fuselage.

Or keep it all Canadian and use the engine pods from a CF-100

There is an affordable 1/144 resin one from F-RSIN (?).  I know because I have one.  I've also managed to acquire a 1/72 vacform as well as decals for the aircraft in TCA service.
