Nice!  How about a license-built US version of the Rotodyne?

Sounds like you have been reading John Baxters alt history for the RAAF  :)

Loved the Civi bird.    Mine (if it ever gets built) may wind up in RAF SAR over all yellow.

Welcome to the Gang Mike.  :D
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

I have 2 Rotodynes planned (called the Westland Walrus in military service), a stone/green RM commando one and a gloss blue Royal Navy ASW/COD bird

must finish my RAAF XV-1 first though...

Oh that's awful Mike. Walrus sounds so 'Alice-in-Wonderland'.

Captain Canada

There were two of them...Walrii, they always work in pairs !

And Madman, as long as you're not planning on using your Dino-verts in place of the lovely caribou !

Which, by the way, could take off and land in about the same distance !

Long live the Bou !

Thanks all for the kind words.

I am planning a RAAF transport Rotodyne, Caribou style wrap around desert camo and 5 bladed (smaller blades than the original napier version) props for my next version.

John Baxter was a great inspiration late in the build, when I purchased his great "Alternative RAAF/RAN" book. Inspirational stuff!

"What if" in the works include a RAAF F-20 Tigershark (purchased instead of the F/A-18 and a RAAF F-22 Raptor (purchased to replace the F/A-18 as the F-35 never materialised!).

Great site btw, I will definately check it out far more often that I used too!

 all

I'm doing it.....for the Rotodyne/Convertiplane group build.

What if the Kaman-licensed Rotodyne had gone into service with the USAF?
What if it had been developed as a Pave-Low style SOF bird instead of the H-53?

What if I get off my donkey, get away from the computer, and go build it??

Stay tuned.......

and it is looking good so far too, Tony!

I might go own the same route you have done and add sponsoons as well, wingtip fuel tanks are a definate go!

I am thinking my RAAF version to more a transport but the thought of adding 20mm aden gun packs is tempting!

Mind you, an ASW Rotodyne is sorta calling me too especially after reading the 1933 "what if" RAN white over blue. Westland Rotodyne HAS.mk2 with the cargo bay area converted to a rotary torpedo bay.

BTW madmike, you might like to know that the guy who edited the John Baxter book, Lee Bagnell, is a regular here, aka The Wooksta!

Just a thought on the Kaman-built Rotodynes: Would they have used Napier Elands or would those have been switched out for US-made engines?  I'm thinking that T64's or T56's would be good, possibly also a turboprop version of the T55.
