Meta Models produces a beautiful 1/24th paper model of the Vanguard that is available through Paper Models International.

I have the Meta Hughes H-1 and it is very nice paper model.

Good post, Thanks!

If you want to make a Vanguard from a conversion, I would begin with a P-36. Quite similar indeed.

      Huh? A P-36 is closer to a P-66 than a BT-13 is? I'd certainly start with a BT-13 for a P-66!

I would buy a Vanguard kit rather than scratchbuilding, but I don't understand why anyone would use a P-36 as a basis for a P-66.

Youch! Could you really bring yourself to chop up an E32 LF BT-13? You can get an AZ Vanguard for half that price.

      I remember back in the '70s building a 1/72 BT-13 using a Corsair fuselage & maybe Zero wings & AT-6 cowl/engine/prop & I think canopy. I'd say a Corsair fuselage is closer than a P-36 by far.

In the past, people tried to use Corsairs as a conversion basis for the Vanguard. I remember seeing one attempt combining a Frog fuselage and tail with Hawk Bf-109F wings. The effect wasn't bad but the scale rather wonky (fuselage too big, wings too short).

This Guy is just right.

What if P-66 evolved into a serious Fighter?

Lets begin with Corsair fuselage and Zero wings and tail plane.

Maroon parts would need some scratch or further research. This way we get a Vanguard on steroids with a very powerful engine.

I have a de-navalized F4U on the agenda, some day. The idea is to use an early F4U fuselage and use P-47 wings, together with the landing gear, and the oil coolers must also go somewhere (maybe wing roots again).

ysi_maniac

... and, what if a more advanced wing, than that of Zero, for Super Vanguard?

The Mustang wings look very good together with that fuselage!
