OK--we have some "favorable press" in a big-time publication: "Fine-Scale Modeler". The latest issue had several in their Reader's Gallery. I attach two examples here:
A tri-motor P-38....

....and a YB-60
My mind is like a compost heap: both "fertile" and "rotten"!

I got this too Great article! That twin lightning looks outstanding

"Modeling the Air Force that never was." (March 1990 FSM)

That's the article!  That's what helped get me into What If modeling. If it wasn't for that article, I probably wouldn't be doing WHIF's today. I'm glad someone else remembers that article!
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

That article jump started my WHIF career also.  As so much as I built that XL Weasel a long time ago.  Sadly, not around anymore.  I think if i could find that article again, or at least a nice scan of it, I'd go as far as to frame it and hang it in the Scooterworks.  Seriously.

Just a thought:
What if we (the whiffers) become "mainstream"?
Oh No!  :o:blink:

Its all ready happening on this side of the pond. Its not uncommon to see a few whiffs on club displays at UK shows these days. Plus the What if? sig get to most of the big shows around the country....so the mundane modellers cant miss us.
I always hope for the best.
Unfortunately,
experience has taught me to expect the worst.

Technically the Twin P-40 isn't a Whif as it actually existed.
'Tis a very nice build.

It was only a mockup though, wasn't it?

Here's another twin P-40 but a more "free" interpretation that actually looks a good deal more practical:
