I found this interesting blog after recovering from a visit of the 'in-laws'

http://www.freewebs.com/steamnoir/aircraft.htm

whilst there is a fair but of steam punk whiffery, the aircraft section a nice mix of 19th C.  WW I, WWII and "to the stars, and beyond" whiffing going on!

worth a perusal,  even something for the Canucks!!

Nice find.  I love that 'Berlin to New York' Rocket, very Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon!
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

From the same site, the Kaiser Cannon:

QuoteThis giant gun was the brain child of Dr. Ing D. Reathmier of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin. It was his wish to bombard the English back to the Stone Age with this huge cannon by firing concrete shells into L.E.O. The gun's barrel was of a new steel and titanium matrix that did away with the need for support at the top of the gun's barrel. The shell was so massive a steam crane was added as a permanent part of the loading equipment. The four-engine R-plane seen in the foreground was to track windage down range of the target, however this proved ineffective due to the shock of the shells passage knocking the plane out of the sky. It took six hours to reload and set up for the next shot. The shockwave upon firing would render all people in a five kilometer radius deaf and unconscious! Undaunted, Dr. Reathmier planned to extend operations and shell the United States, but the whole idea was canceled when it was found that the shells were burning up on reentry in the Earth's atmosphere.

It already looks cool just in grey. Imagine it in all it's iron, brass and wooden glory, belching smoke from the chimneys and hissing sound from steam valves!

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?
