oks, this is not intended as a polictial or extreme personal views thread. just a posting board for ideas of possible modelling matter ...

so here goes ... radiological/dirty bomb store on a Ju.87D and Me.109K

Joe,

Wouldn't a nuke carrying Stuka be tantamount to a kamikaze? (Or whatever that is in German, 'Selbstzerstorunggerat' perhaps?)  ;D
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Regards
Kit

Exactly Kit  :banghead: What I find odd is you look at the size of the real A Bombs of this period and then you see the mock ups of the German ones it just doesn't stack up and I'll end there in case I get going on one !

Would the German's have had anything in the arsenal capable of carrying something like a Fat Man or Little Boy ?
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

I think some of the German bombs were actually "Dirty Bombs" as opposed to nuclear weapons, designed to spread toxic radioative material rather than activating a nuclear explosion.

As for little boy thats actually a rather small bomb compared to fat man and could probably have been carried by the 177 or the 277. Wasnt one of these aircraft assigned to Skoda plant for bomb fitting trials.

The problem with the idea of 'dirty bombs' is this is rather early in the day to concieve of such weapons.

The problem with a German nuclear weapons program that is successful is it rather requires a competant German government and that is contradictory to the Nazi government they had.

Those bombs do look small IMO for the period.
To win without fighting, that is the mastry of war.

Far as I can remember all the German nuclear weapons were dirty bombs using irradiated sand from the nuclear pile they were experimenting with in Haigerloch (not sure of the spelling but it was something like that!). They had stopped most of the effort for an actual A Bomb in 1942 because they thought it would take so long to perfect that the war would be won before the bomb would be available.
Pretty sure that after the war British Intelligence found that the Germans were following a dead end with an extremely heavy design that was similar to a reactor design rather than an actual bomb.
According to an account I saw on TV years ago when Werner Heisenberg heard the basics of the American bombs he almost imediately drew up a workable bomb design in a few minutes. Seems we were lucky they went the wrong direction.

Little Boy wasn't really all that much smaller or lighter than Fat Man, the smaller diameter only makes it appear 'little'.
It was still a large weapon.

Little Boy
Weight    8,900 lbs. (4,000 kg)
Length    9.84 ft. (3.0 m)
Diameter    28 inches (0.7 m)

Fat Man
Weight    10,200 lbs (4,630 kg)
Length    10.6 Feet (3.25m)
Diameter    5 Feet (1.52m)

I've read two fictional accounts of German atomic weapons in the last year or so.

The first was 'A Thousand Suns' by Alex Scarrow.  Heisenberg realises his error in calculating the amount of Uranium required for fission & a bomb is hastily completed in the last days of the war.  A captured B-17 is rigged up & sent on a one way mission to destroy New York if the the allies don't suurender & join Germany in defeating the Russians.

The second is 'The Occupation' by Guy Walters.  It concerns the building of a V-3 battery on Alderney to fire dirty shells at London.  Guy Walters has done a few alternative history novels, I haven't read any others.  I found this one pretty good, if not a classic.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

This is a free download of a book about the German atomic research program. It makes an interesting read.

If you do want to actually do this then it is really only one choice - Unicraft. Well Unicraft speaks for itself though I have their atomic bomb set and it's buildable with the usual sanding/filling involved but not as bad as one of their kits. The Wotan ie V-1 with atomic bomb head looks more like 1/48 scale - a V-1 on steroids, unfortunately it is lopsided - lots of work there - I have one and will probably sell it one day. The other alternative is one from Antares if still available will be the best bet

I did a Stuka and a Bf-109 with dirty bombs for the "Instant Sunshine" build we did a few years back.

Yes we have strayed somewhat have'nt we. I shall resist the temptation to reply to Madoc on what is rather OT.

So I'll stick to the topic and say its a VERY different world where 1940's Germany developes and uses nuclear weapons.

Not that that is impossible perhaps if we have something other than the Nazis in charge.

I have an idea for a whif, but would like some info first.
Does anyone have any idea what a Nazi A-bomb might have looked like? I do know it most likely would have been spherical, but I'm not sure how big around or what style of tail it may have had.
I have read the book " The Virus House " about German Atomic research but have little else on actual bombs.
If I do this, it will be in 1/72 scale.
