Hi folks,

Not sure if many of you are aware, but an Australian Icon is supposed to re-enter production shortly - the GAF Nomad (see here fore more:  http://www.gippsaero.com/article.asp-articleID=517.htm).  This got me thinking - what if a multi-role COIN/Assault transport version was developed:

Load it with ISR sensors and Hellfire missiles and it's good to go.

I found the OV-10 cockpit section a good match on the drawing as well......
To the individual soldiers, *everything* is a frontal assault!

I think that the Australian Army MissionMaster version had four 500LB hard point under the wings for weapons. I remember reading something about its proposed use as a FAC bird. Of cause the SearchMaster variants all have the weapons capability.
It would be a cool what-if though - mate a Nomad with a Bronco and you would have a wicked COIN/ FAC/ ISR machine that could also haul stuff when needed.

Kinda almost sorta looks like a fixed wing Mi-24 Hind.  ;D

GTX - with the Bronco forward fuselage/cockpit arrangement grafted to the Nomad fuselage, and the added weight of armament – I think the engines look way too small and underpowered!!

But I like the concept!
Added too this, I like the idea of a revival of the Nomad and its STOL performance, over that of the leased Beech Kings that the Australian Army are using right know!!

I have experienced the Nomad's STOL first hand many years ago up North with the army – very impressive! Especially it's stopping distance!!

Greg,

I believe there was a COIN version planned by GAF. Not sure of the details but I saw this at the Melbourne Model Expo last year, an N23 Nomad in 1/48 scale

The Uncle Les' 1/48 N22 kit was used as a basis for the conversion.

"Problem" with a Bronco or other tandem seater nose is the width of the Nomad's rest of the body.
You might need something with a side-by side nose, IMHO, maybe a Strikemaster, A-37 or even (*giggles fiendishly*) an A-6? A Saab 105 might also be an option.

Another idea would be a Mi-24 nose? Either the stepped two-seater (offer a chin turret, too ), or the early glass house version? Both should mit well onto the boxy fuselage?

Great idea, I had a 1/72 Nomad. I think it's ended up in one of my spare parts bins. I couldn't tell you which one.
