 Not strictly what-if, as it did see production and combat, albeit in vanishingly small numbers, the Pe-8 was the
only Russian 4-engine bomber to compare with other allied aircraft like the Lancaster or the B-17. The review
is at Modeling Madness.

Its wiff potential comes in things like thinking what would have happened if the Russians had gone forward with
their airborn recoilless guns, or 'flying aircraft carrier' experiments.

Another twist would be to do it up in alternative markings such as:

  • Luftwaffe - captured and either undergoing trials of for covert ops;
  • USAAF (BMF scheme)/RAF - maybe some sort of reverse lend lease :blink:;
  • Postwar, Eastern Block;
  • Chinese Communist;
  • Civilian - converted to airliner similar to what was done with Lancastrians etc; and/or
  • Alt Soviet - e.g. a Normandie-Niemen style squadron flying them.

Damn, now maybe I need one...

Greg

My idea for an RAF one was to speculate that the one Molotov used to come to the UK in remained behind. Molotov then returned to the USSR via Alaska after visiting Rooseveldt in Washington.

Havn't figured out what the RAF would use it for yet  ;D

An obvious RAF one would be a licence produced Blackburn Bognor Regis B.1.
Usage could be:

Bomber Command...Desert Air Force
Coastal Command...White, etc..
100 Group...all black
Bomber Command "Formation" aircraft in a Union Jack scheme....mask that you blighter!!
Postwar transport for the Labour Government.

USAAF 8th Air Force as the Seversky B-19.

Very battered Afgan one from the '50s.

Israeli one used for maritime recon, circa 1956.

Whoooohoooo.....got me thinking now. :thumbsup:

Sorry Rad, but I see it more as a Shorts Skegness or a Martin Mablethorpe rather than one of Blackburns finest.

Boulton-Paul Wolverhampton?

It could be a long-range strategic recon belonging to Wolverhampton Wanderers? Mike Wren??

Or the Armstrong-Whitworth Tittensor?

If it was a type named after villages, the Boulton-Paul North Piddle B.2??

I think they would get built in Spain and given Merlin engines and a H2S radome for MP!

Think of all the post-war versions you could do  ;D

Molotov's one left in the UK could get used by the old "Morning Star" as a delivery aircraft post war ?

But I can see them in use by a Spanish or Italian Socialist govt om MR duties ? Perhaps a Yugoslav or Egyptian one.

Either would be good, especially a Desert schemed Egyptian one...or how about one disposed of to Algeria? Nice markings, even if the aircraft would need to be at least 20 years old!!

I like the idea of a Yugoslavian one too, or Italian?

One in East German markings in an Elint role? or Polish Navy?? :banghead:

How about a flight sent to Spain for the Civil War to following the Nationalist bombing of cities ?

Great idea, Geoff.
Red Bands around the wings/fuselage, and a Red Band playing on take-off.

Mmmmmmm.......gonna need to look out for one.
