Title: DHC Chipmunk T100 - JASDF. Finished pics page 2
Post by: zenrat on May 28, 2017, 04:58:37 am
Two days lost to real life and a model show but I'm hopeful i'll make them up tomorrow.

So what is this?

Basically What If the Japanese Air Self Defence Force bought a tricycle undercarriaged Chipmunk instead of the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor?
I'll be building the Airfix Chipmunk with relocated main undercarriage and a P39 nosewheel bunged on under a nose filled with lead.
Rattle can car paint silver NMF finish with orange panels will be the scheme i'm aiming for and hopefully this year i'll check I actually have a can of clear in my hand BEFORE I press the button and coat the underside with white primer.

I'm off to beddy byes now but i'll make a start tomorrow when I get home from work.

A P-39 nosewheel? Won't that have a Chippie pointing upwards at about 45 degrees?  :o

Sounds good. We don't see a lot of the lovely little Chipmunk around here !

Chipmunk is lovely indeed. I wonder how it will accept a nosewheel. <_<

Chipmunk is lovely indeed. I wonder how it will accept a nosewheel. <_<

It had no choice.

Start (1130 today)
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/gavinmaillardet/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20The%20Start_zpsrygelbz4.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/gavinmaillardet/media/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20The%20Start_zpsrygelbz4.jpg.html)

After getting home from work and doing some PSR on the bedroom ceiling I took myself to the shed and endeavoured to make up for the lost two days.
By lunchtime I had the fuselage halves together, the main UC legs reversed and moved rearwards, control panels scratchbuilt, the seats in place, cocktail sticks up the crew and the nose weighted (fishing weights rather than Heavy Glue this time).
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/gavinmaillardet/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20WIP%2029-5-17%201300%2001_zpsnohgdcqe.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/gavinmaillardet/media/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20WIP%2029-5-17%201300%2001_zpsnohgdcqe.jpg.html)
After a gourmet lunch of ham and cheese sangers, salt & vinegar chips, a muesli bar and a banana washed down with a mug of tea I returned to the shed and by 1700 had the interior painted, the wings and tails on, the (shortened) P39 nosegear dry fitted and the crew primed in black with a white highlight from above.
(http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/gavinmaillardet/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20WIP%2029-5-17%201700%2002_zpsxpsoydwr.jpg) (http://s70.photobucket.com/user/gavinmaillardet/media/PDRV/DHC%20Chipmunk/Chipmunk%20WIP%2029-5-17%201700%2002_zpsxpsoydwr.jpg.html)
Despite the age of the moulds fit on this is pretty good if you remove all the locating pins and test fit & adjust as you go.  A touch of filler will still be required though.  Mainly on the underside at the front and rear of the wing centre section.
That's tomorrows first task.

Tuesday.  Home from work and straight down to start PSR by P'ing in the gaps.  While it dries I will be performing more 1:1 PSR on the bedroom ceiling.

I just built one of these Chipmunks not long ago for my Tintin project, so I can truly appreciate the work that's gone into this. It's looking great and I love the colour scheme!

Title: Re: DHC Chipmunk T100 - JASDF
Post by: zenrat on June 01, 2017, 02:21:02 am
It's Vallejo German Orange with a splash of Deep Yellow.  It could be more vibrant but I reckon it'll look good with the meatballs on top of it.
Decals tomorrow followed by another coat of shiny on Satyrday and final assembly and pics on Sunday.
Nothing like sneaking it in just before the deadline.
No stuff ups so far so i'll either snap off the undercarriage legs tomorrow while decaling or grab the wrong can and give it a coat of white primer on Satyrday or drop it on Sunday.

Obviously I failed to predict the exact stuff up.
I should really have realised that 40 year old (can 1977 really be that long ago?  I feel so old) Hasegawa decals could refuse to leave the backing paper no matter how long they were soaked.
Shame as the designs for the vertical tail looked pretty good.
Never mind, I had a rummage in my decal folder and replaced most of them with something similar.

It doesn't show in the pictures but those meatballs are a touch translucent.  They are from a Hasegawa T-33 that is of the same age as the T-34.  But they came off the backing.  Numbers and frog are from a much newer Hasegawa Phantom.

Wheels on and moving surfaces are pin washed.

And here they are.

DHC Chipmunk T100 JASDF

What if, when searching for a piston engined trainer the JASDF had approached De Havilland Canada and requested they produce a version of the Chipmunk with a tricycle undercarriage?

The result?  Instead of purchasing the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor the Japanese procure the Chipmunk T-100.

Now that is indeed something you don't see very often.  I love the colour scheme and putting up a Chipmunk on three wheels feels like a circus trick.  Very nicely accomplished, that's for sure!

Nice one! The nose wheel looks good and the paint job really suits it.

You could do a whole series of Japan-buys-British from ab-initio-operational: Chippie, Jet Provost, Gnat, then Lightning's and/or SR.177s...

There comes a time when the line of respect becomes the line of cheek  ;) ;D

If you'd have had to do National Service I reckon you'd have needed velcro on your Lance Corporal's stripe  ;D Not that it had been invented back then of course. Or had it ?

I don't take orders well, having a problem with blind obedience.  I wouldn't have lasted long.

Had an uncle who was constantly sewing on and then cutting off his corporal's stripes during National Service  ;)

I'm not too bad taking orders although I draw the line at blind obedience. Learning to give them properly was the difficult thing. I got there in the end (if you can say you are giving orders as a manager in a stats dept ?) and ended up with an exceptional team who very seldom needed to be told to do anything. Just glad I retired before instant mobile comm's became the norm. Seems to have removed people's initiative completely ?

I'm no good at giving them either.
If left in charge no-one does what I say and it all ends in chaos.
