Thanks mate. I've changed it. I always get the two of you mixed up, sorry I've always struggled with names I'm afraid  :banghead:. To be honest I think you are but one person but I can't figure which is the non de plume or is it the bottle marked "secret potion - not to be drunk until the full moon"  ;D

I'm responsible for some of that confusion. Years ago when I first joined the Captain had an avatar picture very similar to the one I later chose, both are old RCAF recruiting posters.

Best dio/WWII aircraft??

This one is difficult as two were built, therefore making this a `real world` subject. The serials/markings are also based on a real world example.

It`s a real shame as this is another of Matrixone`s fantastic builds and I hope some of his more obvious whif builds were/are nominated.

Well as I understand it; matrixone says
"As far as I know not any of these were actually built but there were plans for them to be produced, the sudden end of the war stopped those plans."
That would make it a Whiff in my eyes

Guys, just my 2 cents worth on this.

Wikipedia (yes, yes, I know, the devil incarnate's source of info) states that " ... Delivery commenced in January 1945. When the United States Army overran the Oberpfaffenhofen factory in late April 1945, only 11 Do 335 A-1 single-seat fighter-bombers and two Do 335 A-12 trainers had been completed ... "  (link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_335), and I cannot find a reference to a Do 335 B-12 being built anywhere else on any source in the net, my personal stash of books and a contact who is an aviation historian.

It would appear that the evidence is that no Do 335 B-12 airframes were ever started, let alone completed and entered service. It also seems that the two A-12 trainers did not actually enter service, so therefore any service camouflage scheme applied to any two seat Do 335 {either in an A or B variant} would qualify as a WIFF.

So, seeings as (1) no Do 335 B-12 trainers were ever physically built; (2) no Do 335 A-12 trainers ever entered service; and (3) Matrixone's build covers a 'double WIFF' being an in service model of a paper aircraft whose closest relative never got near the Luftwaffe, I'd say that his build is definitely in. Mr Moderator, what do you think?

Ciao

I can say without doubt that I applaud your conviction with regards to this subject and you may well have a good point about the scheme used.

Found these following pictures, some stating that they are B-12`s although I have no idea. They are missing the guns as such so I`m thinking they may be A-12`s??.

Like I said..., it`s a tough one.

The scheme Matrixone used is an operational one and one not found on the real world examples. It does have guns though..?

However is it different enough to be classed as a whif?
Title: Re: Your Chance to Sway the 2015 Whiffies
Post by: DogfighterZen on May 08, 2015, 06:07:37 am
Well, to me, it seems that by the guns and scheme it would be... there are a lot of builds which only fit in the whif category by scheme and markings, isn't it?
Ok, probably not the most whifed up build but it is one heck of job.

OF COURSE IT IS IN.

No two-seater ever had guns, and no two-seater ever wore those markings.

So this is clearly not real world, in other words it is a What If.

A rather subtle, and superbly executed one at that!

Your all forgetting that Matrixone researches his subjects before modelling them so that he can produce subtle whiffs such as the Do335 B-12 which may not even have been a paper aircraft.

You are of course correct. Subtle being the key word. Hence why the question was asked.

This is probably the best example of a whif being a `victim` of it`s own success.

Moving on........

IMHO it is 100% in. We have been pretty liberal, and don't forget that this is just a nomination list. There's later the Jury's judgement what to add to the voting lists, and, more important, there's the voting among these finalists. Having a broad basis to settle things down is IMHO not bad/wrong, since there's so much good stuff coming along.

Thanks for the nomination of my Do 335B-12, it should be pointed out that this model IS a what-if. The W.Nr. of the model 240161 is correct for the type of aircraft but this W.Nr. was not actually used...not even close.

There were no Do 335B-12's actually built but there were plans to do so and if the war had lasted another half year they might have actually been mass produced. As it was not even a single prototype was built.

The models I prefer to build are late war Luftwaffe and Luft'46 subjects, the rule I have concerning Luft'46 models in my collection is that they be finished in such a way that they look like they were operational and that includes painting them in authentic camouflage colors and patterns when possible.
This what-if Ta 152C is painted and marked to represent a KG(j)27 aircraft, a handful Ta 152C's were built but none were used by KG(j)27.
Few here realize the effort I put into my what-ifs into making them look like they were operational machines, true I don't always cut up models to make a what-if out of them but with ultra late war aircraft like the Ta 152C and Ho 229 putting models of them in logical and sensible camo and markings can have even the most hardcore JMN scratching their heads and leafing through their reference books...I know this because some have wrote me and admitted they were taken in. ;)

That's the true "underneath the radar" spirit!  Whiffing has so many facets, it's IMHO always good to fill a niche.
And I can confirm such requests and even insults (for being duped) even for kitbashings! Since then I added a bold disclaimer under any beauty pic in my FlickR galleries, but it still does not help much.  :-\

I very much appreciate that. Your research must take as long as building the model sometimes.

As I can never tell the difference between m1's RW builds & his whifs, I just take him at his word.

Otherwise I'd spend all my days researching what he has already done ... Which is a pointles waste of my time. :banghead:

Maybe matrixone needs his own category; "MicroWhifs" - where microscopic details & miniscule time-shifts are the difference between this & the Whif World!

Heck, if you want to worry about that level of subtlety you want to try the Wooksta's Spitfires.
He once challenged me to detect the Whiffiness in one of them.
I looked and looked and looked and in the end gave up.
So why was it a What If?
The camouflage was RW, the physicality of the model was RW, the markings were, Ah not quite RW.
The only thing that was Whiffy was the fact that there was one more kill marking than in real life.

Ouch!

Chaps, as usual we seem to be very top heavy with the flying thingy`s so if some of you could look over the floaty and sinky (subs) bits, and wheelie bits, that would be grand.

And don`t forget the drawing/pc bits either.

Have to do this, Chris;

Them's is kangaroos, not kiwis, so it's an Aussie (75 Sqn RAAF) F-104.

Dear Whiffers,

With just over 12 hours left officially to go for nominations to be made and put forward, the Academy will keep the the nomination gallery open for a short period of time so that members can review threads and nominate any candidates that may of been missed.

As is usual, the nominations have been heavily aircraft nominated, so it may be a good chance to look over the other type of what if builds like ships, tanks and artwork.

The gallery will close at approx 8pm BST on Sunday 3rd January with the awards show scheduled for early/mid February. (More details on this soon).

I'll throw my Hindendurg in.  Category guess would be WWII propellor, as I don't recall a "Hydrogen filled rigid dirigible AEW" whiffie category  ;D

Sandiego89's Hindenburg AEW

Best Royal Navy Vessel  Category: Weaver's HMS Cumberland

I've only just noticed this nomination: thanks very much!

I should point out for judging purposes though that all I did was modify Hood's profile of a Country class destroyer: I could never have generated this profile from scratch.

The rest of us usually modify plastic models Weaver so don't put yourself down. The back story is part of the "whole" as well and once I eventually get hold of a County Class destroyer I intend to change it into the Cumberland.

You might find that tricky: Cumberland is longer, wider and deeper than County as discussed on my profiles thread. If I was doing it, I'd start with a larger hull nicked from something else, then transfer the Airfix bits onto it. Mind you, some of them arn't exactly brilliant either...

A little later than planned, (due to watching a 3 hour documentary on the making of Star Wars so completely understandable...), this thread is now locked.

Now the Academy can start the mind blowing task of shifting through the nominees....
